Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of contributions presented by the authors during the Second Annual University of Chicago Oriental Institute Seminar "Performing Death: Social Analyses of Funerary Traditions in the Ancient Mediterranean," held at the Oriental Institute, February 17-18, 2006. The principal aim of the two-day seminar was to interpret the social relevance resulting from the enactment of funerary rituals within the broad-reaching Mediterranean basin from prehistoric periods to the Roman Age. Efforts were concentrated on creating a panel composed of scholars with diverse backgrounds - anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, art historians, and philologists - and the knowledge and expertise to enrich the discussion through the presentation of case-studies linked to both textual and archaeological evidence from the Mediterranean region. Fundamental to the successful realisation of this research process was the active dialogue between scholars of different backgrounds. These communicative exchanges provided the opportunity to integrate different approaches and interpretations concerning the role played by the performance of ancient funerary rituals within a given society and, as a result, helped in defining a coherent outcome towards the interpretation of ancient communities' behaviours.

Book Wordplay in Ancient Near Eastern Texts

Download or read book Wordplay in Ancient Near Eastern Texts written by Scott B. Noegel and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book from Scott B. Noegel offers a comparative, in-depth study of "wordplay" in ancient Near Eastern texts. Noegel establishes comprehensive taxonomies for the many kinds of devices that scholars label as wordplay and for their proposed functions. The consistent terminology proposed offers students and scholars of Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ugaritic, Hebrew, and Aramaic a useful template for documenting and understanding the devices they discover and for comparing them across languages for a rich interdisciplinary dialogue.

Book The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero

Download or read book The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero written by G. E. Jeans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: Being a New Translation of the Letters Included in Mr. Watson's Selection; With Historical and Critical Notes And to almost any reasoning and reasonable narrative of Cicero's life I should attach the highest value, irrespective of the conclusions it led to. There is no other classical work to be compared to his Letters for teaching that the Romans were real living men and women, and not mere paper characters, or school masters' puppets. The time in which he lived, too, was to us almost the central time of the world's history; and there were giants on the earth in those days. Moreover, the often noticed parallel of Cicero's age with our own, though strained by Mr. Froude beyond what it will bear,1 is yet at once plausible and penetrating, and gives to the story of this age an interest and value not resting entirely on the skill of the narrator.
