Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1869. The letters composing this volume were written at various times, during the last sixteen years, and during journeys made in different countries. They contain, however, no regular account of any tour or journey made by the writer, but are merely occasional sketches of what most attracted his attention. The greater part of them have already appeared in print. The author is sensible that the highest merit such a work can claim, if ever so well executed, is but slight. He might have made these letters more interesting to readers in general, if he had spoken of distinguished men to whose society he was admitted; but the limits within which this may be done, with propriety and without offense are so narrow, and so easily overstepped, that he has preferred to abstain altogether from that class of topics. He offers his book to the public, with expectations which will be satisfied by a very moderate success. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded. Book Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landscape 1835 1874

Download or read book Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landscape 1835 1874 written by John Evelev and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landcape, 1835-1874 recovers the central role that the picturesque, a popular mode of scenery appreciation that advocated for an improved and manipulated natural landscape, played in the social, spatial, and literary history of mid-nineteenth century America. It argues that the picturesque was not simply a landscape aesthetic, but also a discipline of seeing and imaginatively shaping the natural that was widely embraced by bourgeois Americans to transform the national landscape in their own image. Through the picturesque, mid-century bourgeois Americans remade rural spaces into tourist scenery, celebrated the city streets as spaces of cultural diversity, created new urban public parks, and made suburban domesticity a national ideal. This picturesque transformation was promoted in a variety of popular literary genres, all focused on landscape description and all of which trained readers into the protocols of picturesque visual discipline as social reform. Many of these genres have since been dubbed "minor" or have been forgotten by our literary history, but the ranks of the writers of this picturesque literature include everyone from the most canonical (Hawthorne, Melville, Thoreau, Emerson, and Poe), to major authors of the period now less familiar (such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Margaret Fuller), to those now completely forgotten. Individual chapters of the book link picturesque literary genres to the spaces that the genres helped to transform and, in the process, create what is recognizably our modern American landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round the World, Vol. 1: A Series of Letters; Europe and America We have printed these letters just as they were. In a few of them there will be found some repetitions. This was inevitable, for they were written for papers published widely apart, and intended for readers in different sections of the country. But these repetitions are rather a charm than a fault, for they give greater fresh ness and vivacity to the descriptions. Besides, the language is varied, and what is repeated is told in a new way and with additional circum stances. Had we attempted to make any changes, we should have marred the whole; and had we omitted, we would have lost some of the best pages. Book Letters From Europe

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Europe: Being Notes of a Tour Through England, France, and Switzerland Well, I may as well begin now. I reached New York city by the New York and Erie railroad. There was nothing noticeable ou-the way, except the diminished travel by this route from Dunkirk eastward. We had but two cars from Dunkirk - till we came within a Short distance of this city - and they were more than neces sary, as we only numbered about fifteen persons in each car. We were promised night-cars in the bill, but we saw nothing of them; indeed, the whole arrangement was less comfortable than we are accustomed to meet with between Cincinnati and Cleveland. Although I have traveled not a little of late years, I know of no railroad over which I pass with so much comfort and sense of safety as the Little Miami and Columbus road. Better cars I have met with, but more accuracy in ar rangement, more order in the company, more politeness in the conductors, I have not. Great credit, I Opine, is due to Mr. C., the Superintendent, and to.mr. S., the General Ticket Agent at Cincinnati. Such men are of value to cities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tennessean Abroad, or Letters From Europe, Africa, and Asia The increased facilities for locomotion and the recognised brotherhood of nations have brought the advantages of travel within the reach of many to whom they were for merly denied. Thousands are every year availing them selves of this pleasantest method of gaining correct ideas of the men and 4 manners of the time, and visiting for themselves the classic spots which have for so many ages inspired the soul of the poet, and guided the pen cil of the painter. In this pilgrimage to the shrines of the Beautiful and the haunts of the Romantic, America has not been without her representatives. There is' scarcely a spot in the Old World that gems the page of history or lives in the poet's song, where the foot of our countryman has not pressed. Some travel from curiosity, others to gain knowledge, While not a few like the birdling of Jenny Lind, go, not knowing why.
