Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of a Family During the War for the Union 1861-1865, Vol. 2 We have just been transferred to this big boat, while the Wilson Small goes for repairs. This boat will accommodate four or five hundred men in bunks, now being put up by the carpenter and filled with mattresses stuffed by the "Lost Children" who are garrisoning York-town... May 18. My entry was broken short by the arrival of 160 men for the Knickerbocker, and we were once more very busy. They were all fed, - numbered, and recorded by name, (Charley's work), and put to bed. Next morning arrived 115 more, for whom the Elizabeth with Miss Wormeley, Miss Gilson, and two men of the staff had been sent up Queen's Creek - tired, miserable fellows, who had been lying in the wet and jolted over horrible roads. There was another tugboat full, too, and Mrs. Griffin and I took charge of both till the men were moved into the Knickerbocker. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War, the bloodiest war in the history of the United States, left its mark on not only the country but on families. Forgotten letters written by Pittsburgh residents Tom and John McClelland capture the intensity of the deadly challenges the young men of that time faced. Tom left home at 22 to seek his fortune in Arizona and save his family from bankruptcy, only to encounter a lawless territory terrorized by Apache warriors, Mexican desperadoes, and Confederate soldiers working to reach the Pacific. John, 19, enlisted in the Union Army's Independent Pennsylvania Light Artillery, fighting in major battles in northern Virginia, including Gettysburg. Their uncle, Col. Sam Black, organized the 62nd Penna Volunteer Regiment but found disaster at Gaines' Mill. As the Civil War rages from the Atlantic Ocean to the California-Arizona border, the brothers do their best to survive and serve their family and country. Their letters provide unforgettable first-hand perspectives on battles, politics, and social issues, as well as details about daily life, such as the dog John adopts to make Army life more bearable. Readers of The McClelland Civil War Letters: A Pittsburgh Family from 1861 to 1865 will step into the pages of history, experiencing the blood, honor, and courage of those who lived it. Book excerpt: International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) 2010 Award Finalists in the Culinary History category. Chocolate. We all love it, but how much do we really know about it? In addition to pleasing palates since ancient times, chocolate has played an integral role in culture, society, religion, medicine, and economic development across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. In 1998, the Chocolate History Group was formed by the University of California, Davis, and Mars, Incorporated to document the fascinating story and history of chocolate. This book features fifty-seven essays representing research activities and contributions from more than 100 members of the group. These contributors draw from their backgrounds in such diverse fields as anthropology, archaeology, biochemistry, culinary arts, gender studies, engineering, history, linguistics, nutrition, and paleography. Book The Fabric of Civil War Society

Download or read book The Fabric of Civil War Society written by Shae Smith Cox and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military uniforms, badges, flags, and other material objects have been used to represent the identity of Americans throughout history. In The Fabric of Civil War Society, Shae Smith Cox examines the material culture of America’s bloodiest conflict, offering a deeper understanding of the war and its commemoration. Cox’s analysis traces the influence of sewn materials throughout the Civil War and Reconstruction as markers of power and authority for both the Union and the Confederacy. These textiles became cherished objects by the turn of the century, a transition seen in veterans replacing wartime uniforms with new commemorative attire and repatriating Confederate battle flags. Looking specifically at the creation of material culture by various commemoration groups, including the Grand Army of the Republic, the Woman’s Relief Corps, the United Confederate Veterans, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Cox reveals the ways that American society largely accepted their messages, furthering the mission of their memory work. Through the lens of material culture, Cox sheds new light on a variety of Civil War topics, including preparation for war, nuances in relationships between Native American and African American soldiers, the roles of women, and the rise of postwar memorial societies.
