Book Four Voices

Download or read book Four Voices written by Shelley J. Pearen and published by . This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a remarkable tour de force of research, Shelley Pearen reveals the innermost thoughts of the people who assembled 150 years ago to negotiate the future of Manitoulin Island, the world's largest freshwater island. Working with long forgotten letters, reports and accounts written in English, French and Ojibwe. Pearen brings to life the people and events of 1861-63 through the actual words spoken and written by four key participants: William McDougall, head of the government's Indian Affairs department; Sasso Itawashkash, chief of the Sheshegwaning Anishinaabeg; Jean-Pierre Choné, Jesuit priest at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Mission in Wikwemikong; and Peter Jacobs, Church of England missionary in Manitowaning, and himself Anishinaabe. For the first time, each of these players is given the stage to explain his own understanding of what actually happened before, during and after the signing of the still-contentious Great Manitoulin Island treaty of 1862. These four voices reveal fascinating personal stories of strengths and frailties."-- from back cover.

Book excerpt: Afterlives of Indigenous Archives offers a compelling critique of Western archives and their use in the development of "digital humanities." The essays collected here present the work of an international and interdisciplinary group of indigenous scholars; researchers in the field of indigenous studies and early American studies; and librarians, curators, activists, and storytellers. The contributors examine various digital projects and outline their relevance to the lives and interests of tribal people and communities, along with the transformative power that access to online materials affords. The authors aim to empower native people to re-envision the Western archive as a site of community-based practices for cultural preservation, one that can offer indigenous perspectives and new technological applications for the imaginative reconstruction of the tribal past, the repatriation of the tribal memories, and a powerful vision for an indigenous future. This important and timely collection will appeal to archivists and indigenous studies scholars alike.

Download or read book A National Crime written by John S. Milloy and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am going to tell you how we are treated. I am always hungry.” — Edward B., a student at Onion Lake School (1923) "[I]f I were appointed by the Dominion Government for the express purpose of spreading tuberculosis, there is nothing finer in existance that the average Indian residential school.” — N. Walker, Indian Affairs Superintendent (1948) For over 100 years, thousands of Aboriginal children passed through the Canadian residential school system. Begun in the 1870s, it was intended, in the words of government officials, to bring these children into the “circle of civilization,” the results, however, were far different. More often, the schools provided an inferior education in an atmosphere of neglect, disease, and often abuse. Using previously unreleased government documents, historian John S. Milloy provides a full picture of the history and reality of the residential school system. He begins by tracing the ideological roots of the system, and follows the paper trail of internal memoranda, reports from field inspectors, and letters of complaint. In the early decades, the system grew without planning or restraint. Despite numerous critical commissions and reports, it persisted into the 1970s, when it transformed itself into a social welfare system without improving conditions for its thousands of wards. A National Crime shows that the residential system was chronically underfunded and often mismanaged, and documents in detail and how this affected the health, education, and well-being of entire generations of Aboriginal children.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sheguiandah site on Manitoulin Island is a rare upper Great Lakes stratified Paleoindian & Archaic site, with alleged earlier cultural materials at the base of the site. The site was discovered & first excavated in the early 1950s but work was never completed and the site remained enigmatic and controversial. Reinvestigation of existing collections of site material and renewed field investigations began in 1989-1990. This book brings together available information on the site, including the re-investigations and subsequent research on the site's geological and paleoenvironmental history. It begins with a history of the initial investigations of the 1950s and continues with chapters on the role of heritage planning in the re-investigations, geoarchaeology, projectile point artefacts, Quaternary geology & stratigraphy & sedimentology of the site, upper Great Lakes climate & water level changes since 11,000 years ago and their effects on the site, the geological history of the site, and the characteristics of quartzite & other potential sources of raw material for the artefacts. The final chapter synthesizes archaeological conclusions regarding the Sheguiandah site and its contribution to the understanding of Paleoindian & subsequent occupations in the upper Great Lakes.
