Book excerpt: Sergei Yesenin was a Russian poet who, in 1925, hanged himself after writing his farewell poem in blood. Jim Harrison's "correspondence" with Yesenin is an American masterwork. In the early 1970s, Harrison was living in poverty on a hard-scrabble farm, suffering from depression and suicidal urges. He began to write daily prose-poem letters to Yesenin, confiding to his unlikely friend about sex, drunkenness, family, politics - about living for another day. Although "the rope" remained ever present, Harrison listened to his poems: "My year-old daughter's red robe hangs from the doorknob shouting Stop."

Book Letters Form My Friend the Knight Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters Form My Friend the Knight Classic Reprint written by H. C. Hensel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Form My Friend, the Knight It has been amply demonstrated that the assembling of a party of patriots and the adoption of a constitution does not form a perfect system of government. The constitution may be ever so carefully considered, yet the first thing necessary under it is the passing of laws enforcing its provisions, qualifying or exaggerating its phrases. A vast system of courts is maintained in an effort to make its broad terms fit the varied and intricate interests of humanity. It is acknowledged that a republic and constitutional government is the best that can be secured in a world where selfishness and greed at least have an equal chance with the better qualities of mankind, but sometimes we are heart-sick at the evasion of proper regulation, the contempt for law and order, the trampling upon the rights of the weaker by the very fact of the law's imperfections. Sometimes we wish there were a good king or a brave Knight going about correcting these evils that a cold, inanimate force called law is not able to remedy. Sometimes we wish there were a higher law that would consider nothing but justice and equity. It is thoughts like these that started the Knight of the Twentieth Century upon his mission. Whether we approve of all his acts or not, we agree with his reasoning and applaud his good intentions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Bridge a Story of the Great Lakes Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bridge a Story of the Great Lakes He was almost running when he turned in at the entrance of his office building, hounded with a sudden fear of screaming in the street. It was time he relaxed the intolerable strain. He could have beaten the elevator man into insensibility for that one glance that might have been curiosity-or pity. For after all the firm was safe. He would not think of the rest nor even admit it to himself. He walked steadily enough down the corridor, and stopped at the familiar door. He read the curved black and gold letters of his name upon it two or three times before he went in. Everything which had belonged to his daily life held now this arresting quality of strangeness. No one looked up as he crossed the outer office. He was so nearly at the end of his endurance that he was grateful they spared him that. He had his hand on the door of his inner office when he saw that on the threshold lay a single white violet. Something, some vivid prescience of fear, told him that Moira was here and that he was to be Spared nothing. Nothing. He Opened that door also and went in, shutting it behind him. She was standing by the windows. She did not move at first, and for a moment he wondered to see her all in black. Then he remembered that, of course, she would be in black - for Gordon, his brother. He put his hands to his head. The crashing was growing very loud - hammers beating him down. The room was very silent. It stood so high that the noise of traffic in the street beneath troubled it no more than the sound of a river troubles the stillness of a forest. But there was no silence for Maclear. He knew that to meet Moira he must be strong as he had not been before. He must fail in nothing, yield nothing, admit no crack in his armour of justification. For, after all, he had done no more than a hundred other men. Why should he pay when a hundred others, with less excuse, went free P He had been betrayed by circumstance; luck had been bitterly against him. That was all. He must remember it. Book Letters From the Sea Side Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters From the Sea Side Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Sea Side What consummate chemistry lurks in its saline depths! It seems to surge and pour its angry surf upon the shore as if in sport, and in defiance of all law, whereas it is stirred and tossed about by storms and currents that are nicely adjusted conditions of its existence. Its active principle of salt is measured by an unerring alchemy that ever freshens and renews; and while a vortex for the filth of the world, it converts all refuse, and debris, in the alembic of its bosom into pure elements that disinfect and animate all creation. The poetry of the ocean is a prolific theme, but if I indulged in rhapsodies you might justly think they were Byron's and not my own. So I will not descant upon its poetic features, but simply remark that it knows no change, and defies the law of mutability that governs all else. It is the most constant friend I find in life. When after months, or years, of absence, I return to its surf-beaten shores it gives me the same honest greeting that saluted me at first. Its integrity is not limited by years: "Time writes no wrinkle on thine azure brow - Such as creation's dawn beheld, thou rollest now." The parish of Westhampton covers many small necks of land each having its individual name derived from Indian tradition. The one on which our house stands is called Ketchabonack - others are Potunk, Mesuck, Oneck, Quiogue, Paukuk, Speonk and Quoque. These titles are, perhaps, not euphonious except to Long Island ears, but they have a local twang that tells its own story of aboriginal custom that must excite the respect of outsiders. We are staying in a farm-house which is occupied by descendants of the family who built it two hundred years ago. The Long Island people are a peculiar race. They are a thrifty set, and they intermarry so frequently that the same families and names continue in the community for centuries. Very seldom a stranger settles in this vicinity. The people have pride of family, and glory in owning and cultivating the acres that belonged to their ancestors.
