Book From Western Deserts to Carolina Swamps

Download or read book From Western Deserts to Carolina Swamps written by John P. Wilson and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While eyewitness accounts of the Civil War by enlisted men are uncommon, even scarcer are personal narratives from the Civil War in the West. These journals and letters were written by Lewis Roe, an Illinois farm boy who served in the 7th U.S. Infantry and the 50th Illinois Volunteer Infantry between 1860 and 1865. They offer details of an epic march from Fort Bridger, Wyoming, to New Mexico, a firsthand account of the Battle of Valverde (1862), and Roe’s efforts to understand ongoing events as the country rushed toward the outbreak of hostilities. Later in the war, Roe documented the Union occupation of Rome, Georgia, and the battle of Allatoona, and left us a candid account of an enlisted man’s experiences with Sherman’s army on its March to the Sea and in the Carolinas Campaign. His relative objectivity and attention to everyday details make this valuable record a lively read.

Book Letters to a Young Scientist

Download or read book Letters to a Young Scientist written by Edward O. Wilson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson imparts the wisdom of his storied career to the next generation. Edward O. Wilson has distilled sixty years of teaching into a book for students, young and old. Reflecting on his coming-of-age in the South as a Boy Scout and a lover of ants and butterflies, Wilson threads these twenty-one letters, each richly illustrated, with autobiographical anecdotes that illuminate his career—both his successes and his failures—and his motivations for becoming a biologist. At a time in human history when our survival is more than ever linked to our understanding of science, Wilson insists that success in the sciences does not depend on mathematical skill, but rather a passion for finding a problem and solving it. From the collapse of stars to the exploration of rain forests and the oceans’ depths, Wilson instills a love of the innate creativity of science and a respect for the human being’s modest place in the planet’s ecosystem in his readers.

Book The Swamp

  • Author : Yoshiharu Tsuge
  • Publisher : Drawn & Quarterly
  • Release : 2024-08-13
  • ISBN : 1770467661

Download or read book The Swamp written by Yoshiharu Tsuge and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoshiharu Tsuge is one of the most influential and acclaimed practitioners of literary comics in Japan. The Swamp collects work from his early years, showing a major talent coming into his own. Bucking the tradition of mystery and adventure stories, Tsuge’s fiction focused on the lives of the citizens of Japan. These mesmerizing comics, like those of his contemporary Yoshihiro Tatsumi, reveal a gritty, at times desperate postwar Japan, while displaying Tsuge’s unique sense of humor and point of view. “Chirpy” is a simple domestic drama about expectations, fidelity, and escape. A couple purchase a beautiful white bird with a red beak. It is said that the bird will grow attached to its owners and never fly away. While the girlfriend is working as a hostess, flirting with men for money, the boyfriend decides to draw a portrait of the new family member, and disaster strikes. In “The Swamp,” a simple rural encounter is charged with sexual tension that is alluring but also fraught with danger. When a young woman happens upon a wing-shot goose, she tries to calm it then suddenly snaps its neck. Later, she befriends a young hunter and offers him shelter, but her motivations remain unclear, especially when the hunter notices a snake in the room where they’ll both be sleeping. The Swamp is a landmark in English manga-publishing history and the first in a series of Tsuge books Drawn & Quarterly will be publishing.

Download or read book Music of the Swamp written by Lewis Nordan and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 1992-01-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is not merely a stellar book. It is absolute ballad put to page.” —Southern Living Lewis Nordan’s fiction invents its own world--always populated by madly heroic misfits. In Music of the Swamp, he focuses his magic and imagination on a boy’s utterly helpless love for his utterly hopeless father--a man who attracts bad luck like a magnet. Nordan evokes ten-year-old Sugar Mecklin’s world with dazzling clarity: the smells, the tastes, and most surely the sounds of life in this peculiar, somewhat bizarre, Delta town. Sugar discovers that what his daddy says is true: “The Delta is filled up with death”; but he also finds an endless supply of hope. Book excerpt: Just over one hundred years ago, three young men, all under 25, set out from England for the Canadian backwoods but within days of arriving one was dead and another arrested for murder. The details of the case, and the corrupt trial that followed, captured public attention to a quite incredible extent. The age of mass media was dawning, and newspapers with the submarine telegraph at their disposal turned the story into an international cause celebre. But while everyone had their say, some essential questions remained unanswered: who actually killed Frederick Benwell, and was murder part of the original plan?
