Friday.-I had a talk on Wednesday with a Chaplain just returned from Basra, and he told me we're likely to stand fast now holding the line Nasiriya-Awaz (or some such place on the Tigris). An advance on Baghdad is impossible without two more divisions, because of the length of communications. There is nothing to be gained by advancing to any intermediate point. The only reason we went as far as Nasiriya was that it was the base of the army we beat at Shaiba, and they had reformed there in sufficient strength to be worth attacking. This is not thought likely to happen again, as the Dardanelles will increasingly absorb all Turkey's resources. It seems to me that what is wanted here pre-eminently is thinking ahead. The moment the war stops[...]".

Download or read book Iraq written by Philip Willard Ireland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1937, is being re-issued now in response to recent events in the Middle East - events which have left many specialists trying to discern the region's future by looking to its past. The book explores the process by which Iraq was transformed from a 'remote' and neglected portion of the Ottoman Empire in 1914 to a political unit possessing all the machinery of a modern state. The growth of Arab nationalism in the region, the establishment of a provisional government and the search for a ruler all had to be attended to by the British in the mandated territory. Unmistakable modern-day parallels make this a fascinating book for Middle East scholars and followers of current events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lian Knight has recreated the amazing life of her grandfather, a war hero. What has been published about him is extraordinary – 2000 newspaper articles, many printed more than a century ago. Yet almost nothing written about him is consistent. The press varied his name, his age, his place of birth, where he lived and what he did. There were whispers that he emerged from poverty, delivering fish before dawn in London’s East End in the markets and laneways of Jack the Ripper’s local haunts, before joining the army at just thirteen. Averse to authority, he was a military superior’s nightmare. He served in South Africa and India before migrating to Australia. When World War I broke out, he was despatched to the Western Front where, gassed, bombed and working against remarkable odds, he saved the lives of many and was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour. He became legendary, gaining medals and escaping death on numerous occasions. After the war he married and finally returned to Australia. He was famous in England and Australia for his bravery and kindness to his fellow man. Later as a movie star, a politician, a boxer, a celebrated Australian identity and a good Samaritan, his notoriety seemed to know no bounds. Which of these stories were real? A mixture of truth and fantasy has continued to be reported ... until now. ‘From page 1 of Ratbag, Soldier, Saint, I entered the magnificent maze of the life of Issy Smith, wonderfully led through that life by Issy’s granddaughter, Lian Knight.’ – General Sir Peter Cosgrove ‘This book brilliantly recounts the unusual life of Sergeant Issy Smith VC, a Jewish war hero of WWI, revealing the many challenges he and his family faced in Australia and England during the war and in the post-war years. A captivating read!’ – MAJGEN (Ret’d), Emeritus Professor Jeffrey V Rosenfeld

Download or read book Indian Army in the First World War written by Alan Jeffreys and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the important global role of the Indian Army during the First World War. It is an academic reassessment of the army by both established and early career scholars of the Indian Army, as well as naval historians. It looks at the historiography of the army - taking into account the recent work on the army (particularly on the Western Front in 1914-1915). The edited volume covers the traditional areas of the Indian Army on the Western Front, in Palestine, Mesopotamia and the defence of the Suez Canal; however, there are also chapters on combined operations; Indian prisoners of war in Germany and Turkey; the expansion of the officer corps; and the Sikh experience, as well as the mobilisation of the equine army at the beginning of the war and the demobilisation of the army in the period from 1918 until 1923. Three additional chapters are related to the theme, such as the role of the Royal Indian Marine; the Territorial Army in India; and Churchill’s portrayal of the Indian Army during the Gallipoli campaign in his account The World Crisis.
