Book excerpt: “No heroes, everyone did their part, and everyone was scared to death.” They are the words of soldier Mark W. Harms in 1968, summing up his combat experience during the Vietnam War. His stunning letter home is just one of hundreds featured in this unforgettable collection, Letters from Vietnam. In these affecting pages are the unadorned voices of men and women who fought–and, in some cases, fell–in America’s most controversial war. They bring new insights and imagery to a conflict that still haunts our hearts, consciences, and the conduct of our foreign policy. Here are the early days of the fight, when adopting a kitten, finding gold in a stream, or helping a local woman give birth were moments of beauty amid the brutality . . . shattering first-person accounts of firefights, ambushes, and bombings (“I know I will never be the same Joe.”–Marine Joe Pais) . . . and thoughtful, pained reflections on the purpose and progress of the entire Southeastern Asian cause (“All these lies about how we’re winning and what a great job we’re doing . . . It’s just not the same as WWII or the Korean War.” –Lt. John S. Taylor.) Here, too, are letters as vivid as scenes from a film–Brenda Rodgers’s description of her wedding to a soldier on the steps of Saigon City Hall . . . Airman First Class Frank Pilson’s recollection of President Johnson’s ceremonial dinner with the troops (“He looks tired and worn out–his is not an easy job”) . . . and, perhaps most poignant, Emil Spadafora’s beseeching of his mother to help him adopt an orphan who is a village’s only survivor (“This boy has nothing, and his future holds nothing for him over here.”) From fervent patriotism to awakening opposition, Letters from Vietnam captures the unmistakable echoes of this earlier era, as well as timeless expressions of hope, horror, fear, and faith.

Book 13 Moons over Vietnam 1St Moon Innocence

Download or read book 13 Moons over Vietnam 1St Moon Innocence written by Ben Thieu Long and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 13 Moons over Vietnam—1st Moon: Innocence Why another memoir on Vietnam? There are already hundreds of publications on the Vietnam War. 13 Moons over Vietnam captures a unique perspective of a soldier’s experience of war, juxtaposing more than 150 stories between the lines of 280 uncensored letters to his wife, who was pregnant with their first child. These stories, describing actual experiences, are conveyed with raw emotions of anxiety and fear, refuting the nonchalant tone of his correspondence home. The effect is a stark and unsettling contrast between what is written home and what actually happens. 13 Moons over Vietnam is organized as a series segmented by lunar cycles that symbolize the author’s struggles with identity and faith as he confronts progressive incidents of social and emotional violence. Begin with 1st Moon: Innocence, and witness a metamorphosis that spirals through a moral and spiritual minefield.

Book Welcome Sky Soldiers Letters Home from Vietnam

Download or read book Welcome Sky Soldiers Letters Home from Vietnam written by Mike Walker and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-05-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author decided over a forty-year period to write about his experiences in South Vietnam with the Fourth Battalion, 503rd Airborne Infantry. His parents had managed to save every letter he had sent home during that time. What Mike decided to do with the help of his oldest granddaughter, Sierra, was to reproduce the letters in chronological order, with all the grammatical errors, misspellings, and fractured sentences as is. The letters were often written in harsh jungle conditions, under duress with pencil and often wet paper. He felt it would help convey, somewhat, the terrible conditions he and his fellow members of the "herd" were constantly under. Under each reproduced letter, he then wrote of happenings during that time, a diary of sorts. He also concluded he would not spend much time with the blood and guts but devote the majority of the work to the everyday goings-on, both funny and serious! The book begins with time spent in West Germany before moving on to South Vietnam. During the height of the war, more and more paratroopers were needed to fill the ranks of the fallen and discharged, so the Army started a second jump school, the original being at Fort Benning, Georgia, at Weisbaden Airforce Base, West Germany. He was then sent halfway around the world to South Vietnam, and the rest is history!

Stories of actual experience are positioned sequentially among actual letters sent home to his new wife. He tries to censor his daily experiences in the letters in an effort to protect their relationship from the contradictions of his behavior and progressively disturbed thoughts. The soldier’s responses to temptation trigger an inner battle over values, identity, and spiritual well-being. His actions and subsequent turmoil prompt a transformation from naïve innocence toward alienated detachment. 3rd Moon: Discord highlights his responses to temptation that challenge his moral convictions. His journey through a minefield of ethical trials undercuts his strength of commitment and precipitates a metamorphosis of mind and spirit.

Book excerpt: "Long Binh Jail was a place so feared that American soldiers would rather face the Viet Cong than be sent there." "Known as "LBJ" or simply "The Stockade," it was officially the U.S. Army Installation Stockade in Long Binh, South Vietnam. Within its confines were Americans whose offenses ran the gamut from drug possession, insubordination, and AWOL, to assault, rape, and murder. Containing up to a thousand prisoners at a time, Long Binh jail was, in effect, the Army's own little penal colony and one sharply divided by racial tensions." "In 1968, these tensions erupted when most of its African-American prisoners took over the prison compound. The riot, which had to be put down by armed American troops using tear gas, was noted around the world as another sign of the sagging morale of U.S. forces. Noted military historian Cecil Barr Currey tells the story of Long Binh jail through the words of dozens of former guards, prisoners, and administrators. They reveal a disturbing aspect of the Vietnam War that has not been examined until now."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: A work that has served as a literary cornerstone for the Vietnam generation, The 13th Valley follows the strange and terrifying Vietnam combat experiences of James Chelini, a telephone-systems installer who finds himself an infantryman in territory controlled by the North Vietnamese Army. Spiraling deeper and deeper into a world of conflict and darkness, this harrowing account of Chelini's plunge and immersion into jungle warfare traces his evolution from a semipacifist to an all-out warmonger. The seminal novel on the Vietnam experience, The 13th Valley is a classic that illuminates the war in Southeast Asia like no other book.
