Book Selected Letters

  • Author : Francesco Petrarca
  • Publisher : I Tatti Renaissance Library
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9780674058347
  • Pages : 800 pages

Download or read book Selected Letters written by Francesco Petrarca and published by I Tatti Renaissance Library. This book was released on 2017 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We naturally think of Petrarca first as a poet. But he was much more than that. The first of the great scholar-poets of the Renaissance, Petrarca was instrumental in establishing as a cultural goal the rediscovery and collection of manuscripts of the ancient Latin authors; thanks to Petrarca the humanist scholars who followed him became the main conduit for the transmission and revitalization of classical learning, a necessary condition of the wider European Renaissance. Even more significant was Petrarca's role in shaping the literary movement that became known as humanism, a movement that for centuries promoted the study and cultivation of Latin literature. A charismatic figure with a gift for friendship, his life - revealed above all in his letters - became a model for how to live a literary life, how to reconcile the study of pagan literature with sincere Christian belief, and how the study of ancient languages and literatures could serve both true religion and the public world of princes and republics, as well as promote moral excellence in mankind as a whole. He gave the humanities a set of ideals that they fed upon for centuries. He taught how the civic virtues and philosophical wisdom of the pagans could be combined with Christian teachings to produce a a richer civilization. He taught that the humanistic study of antiquity could transform lives and bring back virtue as a personal and public ideal. He more than anyone planted the great tree of Christian classicism which flourished in the West down to modern times.--

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy to a Younger Sister, Vol. 2 of 2 I am well aware that my acquaintance with the deeper principles of art is too insufficient to justify my stating the impressions made upon my own mind by the sight of paintings and statues as opinions; nevertheless, I have thought it better simply to narrate these as they were called forth. To have merely adopted the Opinions of critics far better qualified to decide upon the merits of works of art, as my own, where I have not been able to feel their truth, would have been insincere; and to have given my own ideas with an air of authority would have been as unbecoming. Excerpt: ... enough for contentment, if a man has never so small an income. The situation of the city, the mildness of the climate, can never be sufficiently extolled; but it is almost exclusively to these that the stranger is referred. No doubt one who has abundance of time, tact, and means, might remain here for a long time with profit to himself. Thus Sir William Hamilton has contrived highly to enjoy a long residence in this city, and now, in the evening of his life, is reaping the fruits of it The rooms, wltich he has had furnished in the English style, are most delightful, and the view from the corner room perhaps unique. Below you is the sea, with a view of Capri; Posilippo on the right, with the promenade of Villa Real between you and the grotto; on the left an ancient building belonging to the Jesuits; and beyond it the coast stretching from Sorrento to Cape Minerva. Another prospect equal to this is scarcely to be found in Europe, --at least, not in the centre of a great and populous city. Hamilton is a person of universal taste, and, after having wandered through the whole realm of creation, has found rest at last in a most beautiful wife, a masterpiece of the great artist, --Nature. And now after all this, and a huudred fold more of enjoyment, the Sirens from over the sea are beckoning me; and if the wind is favourable, I shall start at the same time with this letter, --it for the north, I for the south. The human mind will uot be confined to any limits: I especially require breadth and extent in an eminent degree; however, I must content myself on this occasion with a rapid survey, and must not think of a long, fixed look. If by hearing and thinking, I can only attain to as much of any object as a finger's tip, I shall be able to make out

The Venetian is the language generally spoken here, and indeed in all the considerable towns of this state, except a few, such as Brescia and Bergamo, which have a dialect of their own.
