It will not be necessary, therefore, to go into details here. I should do injustice, however, to my feelings, if I did not refer in a few words to my fellow-travellers, Rev. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Egypt and Syria The letters which compose this volume, are the unstudied communications of a Brother to a Sister - written for no other eye than hers, and printed solely with the hope of affording gratification to those by whom the character and talents of the lamented writer were well known. There are some among his friends, more devoted to antiquarian pursuits than himself, who may not concur in many opinions which he has expressed concerning Egyptian antiquities; but these, being his own convictions, which he was too candid to conceal, can be perused only with kind and generous feelings. The letters, written amidst the inconveniences and hindrances of Eastern travel, contain, with a few notes appended to them, all that remains of the writer's descriptions of his journeyings in Egypt, Nubia, and Palestine, until within a few days of his arrival at Damascus, where it pleased God that they should terminate with his life. Book Olga Tufnell s Perfect Journey

Download or read book Olga Tufnell s Perfect Journey written by John D.M. Green and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olga Tufnell (1905–85) was a British archaeologist working in Egypt, Cyprus and Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s, a period often described as a golden age of archaeological discovery. For the first time, this book presents Olga’s account of her experiences in her own words. Based largely on letters home, the text is accompanied by dozens of photographs that shed light on personal experiences of travel and dig life at this extraordinary time. Introductory material by John D.M. Green and Ros Henry provides the social, historical, biographical and archaeological context for the overall narrative. The letters offer new insights into the social and professional networks and history of archaeological research, particularly for Palestine under the British Mandate. They provide insights into the role of foreign archaeologists, relationships with local workers and inhabitants, and the colonial framework within which they operated during turbulent times. This book will be an important resource for those studying the history of archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly for the sites of Qau el-Kebir, Tell Fara, Tell el-‘Ajjul and Tell ed-Duweir (ancient Lachish). Moreover, Olga’s lively style makes this a fascinating personal account of archaeology and travel in the interwar era.

Book The Jews in Egypt and in Palestine Under the Fatimid Caliphs Vol 2

This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews in Egypt and in Palestine Under the Fatimid Caliphs, Vol. 2: A Contribution to Their Political and Communal History Based Chiefly on Genizah Material Hitherto Unpublished In the letters and other documents, reproduced in the following pages, we possess a good sample of Hebrew as she was written (and perhaps spoken) in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth centuries. We see how the Paitanic phraseology pervaded the style of ordinary private letters. However arbitrary a treatment was meted out to grammar and philology, it cannot be denied that the Piyyut as a literary form widened the limits of the language, making it flexible and capable of expressing new thoughts and various shades of meaning. Oh the other hand, we detect a considerable influence of Arabic, the native tongue of the Jews in the Orient, on the syntax of literary Hebrew. At all events, the Semitic character of the language remained unimpaired. The manuscripts edited here will supply material of no negligible a quantity for a fascinating study on Hebrew in speech and in writing throughout the centuries both in Palestine and in the countries of the Diaspora. Book The Amarna Letters

Download or read book The Amarna Letters written by William L. Moran and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancient inscription identified some of the ruins at el Amarna as "The Place of the Letters of the Pharaoh." Discovered there, circa 1887, were nearly four hundred cuneiform tablets containing correspondence of the Egyptian court with rulers of neighboring states in the mid-fourteenth century B.C. Previous translations of these letters were both incomplete and reflected an imperfect understanding of the Babylonian dialects in which they were written. William Moran devoted a lifetime of study to the Amarna letters to prepare this authoritative English translation. The letters provide a vivid record of high-level diplomatic exchanges that, by modern standards, are often less than diplomatic. An Assyrian ruler complains that the Egyptian king's latest gift of gold was not even sufficient to pay the cost of the messengers who brought it. The king of Babylon refuses to give his daughter in marriage to the pharaoh without first having proof that the king's sister—already one of the pharaoh's many wives—is still alive and well. The king of Karaduniyash complains that the Egyptian court has "detained" his messenger—for the past six years. And Egyptian vassal Rib-Hadda, writing from the besieged port of Byblos, repeatedly demands military assistance for his city or, failing that, an Egyptian ship to permit his own escape.

Book Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor

Download or read book Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor written by Yossi Klein Halevi and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Now with a new Epilogue, containing letters of response from Palestinian readers. "A profound and original book, the work of a gifted thinker."--Daphne Merkin, The Wall Street Journal Attempting to break the agonizing impasse between Israelis and Palestinians, the Israeli commentator and award-winning author of Like Dreamers directly addresses his Palestinian neighbors in this taut and provocative book, empathizing with Palestinian suffering and longing for reconciliation as he explores how the conflict looks through Israeli eyes. I call you "neighbor" because I don’t know your name, or anything personal about you. Given our circumstances, "neighbor" might be too casual a word to describe our relationship. We are intruders into each other’s dream, violators of each other’s sense of home. We are incarnations of each other’s worst historical nightmares. Neighbors? Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor is one Israeli’s powerful attempt to reach beyond the wall that separates Israelis and Palestinians and into the hearts of "the enemy." In a series of letters, Yossi Klein Halevi explains what motivated him to leave his native New York in his twenties and move to Israel to participate in the drama of the renewal of a Jewish homeland, which he is committed to see succeed as a morally responsible, democratic state in the Middle East. This is the first attempt by an Israeli author to directly address his Palestinian neighbors and describe how the conflict appears through Israeli eyes. Halevi untangles the ideological and emotional knot that has defined the conflict for nearly a century. In lyrical, evocative language, he unravels the complex strands of faith, pride, anger and anguish he feels as a Jew living in Israel, using history and personal experience as his guide. Halevi’s letters speak not only to his Palestinian neighbor, but to all concerned global citizens, helping us understand the painful choices confronting Israelis and Palestinians that will ultimately help determine the fate of the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Bible Lands: Notes of Travel in Italy, Greece, Asia-Minor, Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, Cush, and Palestine Ine years ago, with a considerable degree of relue tance, the author was induced to publish a book of travels bearing the title, Europe and Bible Lands. The work was received with so much favor that eleven editions were printed to meet the demand for it. From the many kind words written and spoken in regard to the book the author has been led to believe that some good resulted from its publication. And now, after the lapse of almost a half score of years, another journey has been made to the Lands of the Bible, another series of letters has been written and another book is to be sent out on its mission. The question as to the good to be accomplished by a work of this kind has been anxiously considered by the writer. If no good is to come to humanity from it, then the time spent in travel and writing has been wasted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Middle East Mosaic

  • Publisher : Modern Library

  • ISBN : 0307430421
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book A Middle East Mosaic written by Bernard Lewis and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of war and in peace, from the earliest days of the Roman Empire to our own, Westerners have journeyed to the lands of the middle east, bringing back accounts of their adventures and impressions. Yet it was never a one way exchange. From the first Arab embassy to the Vikings in the 9th century to the internet musings of the Taliban, A Middle East Mosaic collects a rich, boisterous literature of cultural exchange. We see the American Revolution through the eyes of a Moroccan Ambassador and the French Revolution through a series of Imperial Ottoman proclamations. We find surprising portraits of Napoleon ("a brigand chief"), TE Lawrence and Ataturk. We learn what George Washington and Machiavelli through t of Turkish politics and hear Flaubert and Thackeray rail against eastern crime and punishment. We peer into Voltaire's business correspondence and follow the footsteps of Mark Twain, Richard Burton, Gertrude Bell and Ibn Battutta, the Marco Polo of the east. Great discoveries are recorded - an Egyptian Ambassador is introduced to electricity and dismisses the spectacle as "frankish trickery;" another pronounces the invention of a secure mail system most useful for assignations. We enter the harem with a 16th century organ maker and emerge with Ottoman reform. It was not until the sixteenth century that the first middle eastern rulers entered into diplomatic relations with European rulers, but trade often precede diplomatic relations. Business men from the days of the crusades against Saladin to the oil prospecting of Samuel Cox and his descendents have seen great possibilities in the markets of the middle east. And throughout the centuries we have been united by war. We witness the outbreak of the Crimean war with Karl Marx and enter Egypt with Napoleon. We observe Arab customs with George Patton and visit Baghdad and Cairo with George F. Kennan in the second world war. When Usama bin Ladin rails against "Jews and crusaders" occupying the holy land, he is rehearsing a grievance with a long history. This symphony of voices, full of wit and wisdom, spite and wonder, suspicion, befuddlement and occasional insight, is ordered and explained by our foremost living historian of the middle east. The fruit of a lifetime of scholarship and erudition, A Middle East Mosaic is a dazzling capstone to a brilliant career. In a spirited reappraisal of western views of the east and eastern views of the west over the last two thousand years, Bernard Lewis gives us a brilliant over-view of 2,000 years of commerce, diplomacy, war and exploration. This book is a delight, a treasury of stories drawn from letters, diaries and histories, but also from unpublished archives and previously untranslated accounts. Diplomats and interpreters, slaves, soldiers, pilgrims and missionaries, princes and spies, businessmen, doctors and priests all pour forth their stories of the people and events that shaped history. A Middle East Mosaic cannot fail to appeal to anyone with an appetite for history and a curiosity about the vagaries of cultural exchange.
