Download or read book Early Modern European Diplomacy written by Dorothée Goetze and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Diplomatic History has turned into one of the most dynamic and innovative areas of research – especially with regard to early modern history. It has shown that diplomacy was not as homogenous as previously thought. On the contrary, it was shaped by a multitude of actors, practices and places. The handbook aims to characterise these different manifestations of diplomacy and to contextualise them within ongoing scientific debates. It brings together scholars from different disciplines and historiographical traditions. The handbook deliberately focuses on European diplomacy – although non-European areas are taken into account for future research – in order to limit the framework and ensure precise definitions of diplomacy and its manifestations. This must be the prerequisite for potential future global historical perspectives including both the non-European and the European world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piracy and the English Government, 1616-1642, explodes the myth that England was ’a nation of pirates’, arguing that the English people were far more often victims of piracy. The costs to the economy and society resulting from piracy, which are critically examined here for the first time, reveal that not only were hundreds of English ships lost to pirates in the period, but an astonishing number of men, women and children (approximately 8,000) were carried away to Barbary by pirates and sold into slavery. The response of the government to these losses, which posed significant political problems for the early Stuart government, are explored and related to broader political concerns and influences.

Download or read book The German Political Broadsheet 1600 1700 1616 1619 written by John Roger Paas and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 1985 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1660s were a time of continual warfare in Europe. Early in the decade the Ottoman Empire posed a grave threat to the West, and later competing national interests led the French, the English, and the Dutch to become embroiled in military confl ict. As people sought to keep abreast of current events, broadsheets constituted one of the most important sources of news. Reproduced in this volume are 450 sheets drawn from over 80 collections in 15 countries for the period from 1662 to 1670. The majority of this material is extremely rare, and very few of the sheets have been reproduced since the original printing in the seventeenth century. The entire edition, which now comprises 9 volumes and includes more than 3000 half-tone reproductions of broadsheets dating from 1600 to 1670, is unparalleled in its breadth and depth. It is a valuable primary resource for scholars in many fields who have an interest in Germany and/or European politics in
Download or read book An Inner World written by Lara Yeager-Crasselt and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Inner World, the exhibition co-curated by Lara Yeager-Crasselt of the Leiden Collection and Heather Gibson Moqtaderi, Assistant Director and Associate Curator of the Arthur Ross Gallery, features exceptional paintings by seventeenth-century Dutch artists working in or near the city of Leiden, including nine paintings from the Leiden Collection (New York) and one painting from the Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, MA). Ten rare seventeenth-century books drawn from the collection of University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts expand the intellectual and cultural contexts of the exhibition. Works by Gerrit Dou, Gabriel Metsu, Domenicus van Tol, Willem van Mieris, and Jacob Toorenvliet demonstrate how these artists developed a sustained interest in an inner world—figures in interior spaces, and in moments of contemplation or quiet exchange, achieved through their meticulous technique of fine painting. In this lavishly illustrated catalogue, essays penned by specialists in the field of early modern Dutch painting illuminate the exhibition's themes and lesser known artists, and shed new light on the fijnschilders, or fine painters, of Leiden. Yeager-Crasselt's essay explores the central themes of An Inner World through the lens of Leiden as a university city and Dutch artists' interests in the illusionism of space, candlelight, and painted surfaces. Shira Brisman examines the use of candlelight in seventeenth-century paintings and its role as a source of illumination as well as an indicator of the larger issue of the wax trade and the "outer world" of commerce. Last, Eric Jorink reflects on the confluence of art, science, and religion in the Dutch Golden Age.
Download or read book Memory Wars in the Low Countries 1566 1700 written by Jasper van der Steen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolt in the Netherlands erupted in 1566 and tore apart the Low Countries. In Memory Wars in the Low Countries, 1566-1700 Jasper van der Steen explains how public memories of the Revolt in the Habsburg Netherlands in the South and the Dutch Republic in the North diverged and became the objects of fierce contestation in domestic political struggles, on both sides of the border and throughout the seventeenth century. Against widespread assumptions about the supposed modernity of cultural memory Memory Wars argues that early modern public memory did not require the presence of state actors, nationalism and modern mass media in order to play a role of political importance in both North and South.
Download or read book Liberty and Religion Church and State in Leiden s Reformation 1572 1620 written by Christine Kooi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leiden was the second largest city of the early modern Dutch Republic. This city became officially Protestant in 1572, but it took fifty years before the Reformed Church settled completely into the city's polity and society. This was largely due to disagreements between the city's ruling elites and the Reformed leaders about how much independence the church should enjoy. This book examines the establishment and early history of the Reformed community of Leiden. The evolution of the controversy between church and state is examined, from the 1570s, during the Dutch Revolt, to the early 1620s - the beginning of the Dutch Republic's Golden Age. It also examines the consequences of this controversy for Leiden's non-Reformed confessions, especially Catholics, Lutherans and Mennonites, and places the case of Leiden in a wider Dutch and European context.
