Book Routledge Revivals The Letters and Private Papers of William Makepeace Thackeray Volume I 1994

Download or read book Routledge Revivals The Letters and Private Papers of William Makepeace Thackeray Volume I 1994 written by Edgar F. Harden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, these two volumes are intended as a supplement to the four-volume edition edited by Gordon N. Ray in 1945-46. In writing to his broad range of correspondents, Thackeray produced a varied body of letters that will help readers to better understand his nineteenth-century society as well as his professional and private life — especially his relationships with women. These volumes contain 1713 letters: 1464 to and from Thackeray that were not included in the earlier volumes, and 249 with texts that have been edited from newly available manuscripts, and that thereby replace texts that were printed in Ray from incomplete sources.

Book Real War Horses

  • Author : Anthony Dawson
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2016-10-30
  • ISBN : 1473847087
  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book Real War Horses written by Anthony Dawson and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many histories have been written about the conflicts the British army was involved in between the Battle of Waterloo and the First World War. There are detailed studies of campaigns and battles and general accounts of the experiences of the soldiers. But this book by Anthony Dawson is the first to concentrate in depth, in graphic detail, on the experiences of the British cavalry during a century of warfare. That is why it is of such value. It is also compelling reading because it describes, using the words of the cavalrymen of the time, the organization, routines, training and social life of the cavalry as well as the fear and exhilaration of cavalry actions. Perhaps the most memorable passages record the drama and excitement of cavalry charges and the brutal, confused, often lethal experience of close-quarter combat in a melee of men and horses. Few books give such a direct inside view of what it was like to serve in the British cavalry during the nineteenth century.

Book A Very Private Eye

Download or read book A Very Private Eye written by Barbara Pym and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Barbara Pym is one of my most favourite novelists. Few other writers have given me more laughter and more pleasure.' Jilly Cooper ‘Could one write a book based on one’s diaries over thirty years? I certainly have enough material,’ wrote Barbara Pym. This book, selected from the diaries, notebooks and letters of this much loved novelist to form a continuous narrative, is indeed a unique autobiography, providing a privileged insight into a writer’s mind. Philip Larkin wrote that Barbara Pym had ‘a unique eye and ear for the small poignancies of everyday life’. Her autobiography amply demonstrates this, as it traces her life from exuberant times at Oxford in the thirties, through the war when, scarred by an unhappy love affair, she joined the WRNS, to the published novelist of the fifties. It also deals with the long period when her novels were out of fashion and no one would publish them, her rediscovering in 1977, and the triumphant success of her last few years. It is now possible to describe a place, situation or person as ‘very Barbara Pym’. A Very Private Eye, at once funny and moving, shows the variety and depth of her own story.

Book Letters of Louis D Brandeis Volume III 1913 1915

Download or read book Letters of Louis D Brandeis Volume III 1913 1915 written by Louis D. Brandeis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1973-06-30 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the election of Woodrow Wilson in 1912, Louis D. Brandeis emerged as the undisputed intellectual leader of those reformers who were trying to recreate a democratic society free from the economic and political depradations of monopolistic enterprise. But now these reformers had a champion in the White House, and direct access to him through one of his most trusted advisers. In this volume we see what was probably the high point of progressive reform—the first three years of the Wilson Administration. During these years Brandeis was considered for a Cabinet position, consulted frequently on matters of patronage, and called in at key junctures to determine policy. But he still kept up his many obligations to different reform groups: arguing cases before the Supreme Court, acting as public counsel in rate hearings, writing Other People's Money, one of the key exposés of the era, as well as advising his good friend Robert M. LaFollette and other reform leaders. Yet at the height of his career as a reformer, Brandeis suddenly took on another heavy obligation, the leadership of the American Zionist movement, and helped marshal Jews in this country to aid their brethren in war-ravaged Europe and Palestine. Carrying over his democratic ideals, he challenged the established American Jewish aristocracy in the Congress movement, in order to broaden the base of Jewish participation in important issues. At the end of 1915, Brandeis was an important figure not only in domestic reform and Jewish affairs, but on the international scene as well. And although no one knew it at the time, he stood at the brink of nomination to the nation's highest court. As in the earlier volumes, these letters indicate the inner workings of American reform, and they also show how American Zionism, under the leadership of Brandeis and his lieutenants, assumed those characteristics that would make it a unique and powerful instrument in world politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kidnapping, an elopement gone wrong, and a sensational nineteenth-century trial are only the beginning of this Regency mystery. England, 1817. Barrister George Tuckett wakes to discover that his sixteen-year-old niece Maria Glenn, reputed heiress to West Indian sugar plantations, is missing. It seems she has been abducted by the Bowditches, a local farming family, who intend to force her to marry one of their sons. While Maria is ultimately rescued, the investigation that follows uncovers a complex and disturbing web of lies. At a drama-filled trial that is the talk of the country, four are sentenced to prison. When a cabal of powerful people begin a campaign to destroy Maria’s testimony, her supporters fall away and she is openly vilified. Her enemies have her arrested for perjury, and soon she is forced to flee into exile. Yet the story of conspiracy and deception does not end there, as Maria and her uncle are to suffer one final and devastating betrayal . . . Deftly exploring the details of a case that had many in England taking sides, The Disappearance of Maria Glenn is an intriguing fictionalized account of a tawdry tale that will entice readers of both Regency romance and historical mystery.
