Excerpt: ...old Geneva; the town was improved and enlarged, without doubt, yet it was not their Geneva. But the bulwarks, the walls, of the heavenly city will not be removed. This is a great consolation; but, as I have already said, it supposes the heart to be there. For my part, I am perfectly at rest. Now all institutions are being assaulted, if they are not already thrown down; and the great whore, without strength, unless given of the beast, loudly proclaims her intention to ride upon the beast. Here, as well as elsewhere, these gentlemen proclaim it aloud It is a plot, well organised at Eome, and systematically carried out. But if the floods rise, the Lord is above the flood, mightier than the noise of many waters. They rise, and plot their own ruin, even in this world. But our kingdom is in nowise affected, it is beyond it all, and the Lord whom we serve is above all. Besides, what peace do we not find in communion with the Father and the Son! We do not sufficiently apprehend that the things which are not seen are revealed to us; that which eye hath not seen, which ear has not heard, which has not entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him; but God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit, communicated them, by words which the Holy Ghost has taught; and, lastly, these things are discerned by the Spirit. These are the three steps in the knowledge of divine things. Then, also, he who hath seen Jesus hath seen the Father. XXII. Beloved Brother, --I received your little letter, and was glad to hear from you. As to 1 Timothy v., verses 24, 25 relate to verse 22. Timothy was not hastily to lay hands on any, in case the one on whom hands had been placed should walk badly afterwards. Timothy would, although..

Book The Americanization of the Apocalypse

Download or read book The Americanization of the Apocalypse written by Donald Harman Akenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, a new, American scripture appeared on the scene. It was the product of a school of theological thinking known as Dispensationalism, which offered a striking new way of reading the Bible, one that focused attention squarely on the end-times. That scripture, The Scofield Reference Bible, would become the ur-text of American apocalyptic evangelicalism. But while the Scofield took hold in the United States, the belief system from which it emerged, Dispensationalism, was not primarily a homegrown American phenomenon. In The Americanization of the Apocalypse: Creating America's Own Bible Donald Harman Akenson examines the creation and spread of Dispensationalism. The story is a transnational one: created in southern Ireland by evangelical Anglicans, who were terrified by the rise of Catholicism, then transferred to England, where it was expanded upon and next carried to British North America by "Brethren" missionaries and then subsequently embraced by American evangelicals. Akenson combines a respect for individual human agency with an equal recognition of the complex and persuasive ideational system that apocalyptic Dispensationalism presented. For believers, the system explained the world and its future. For the wider culture, the product of this rich evolution was a series of concepts that became part of the everyday vocabulary of American life: end-times, apocalypse, Second Coming, Rapture, and millennium. The Americanization of the Apocalypse is the first book to document, using direct archival evidence, the invention of the epochal Scofield Reference Bible, and thus the provenance of modern American evangelicalism.

Book excerpt: Bound in the same black cloth as J.N. Darby's Collected Writings, these additional volumes complement that set. First, the 7 volume Notes and Comments on Scripture were gleaned from Darby's notebooks after his death. Next, the 3 volume Letters of J.N. Darby gives insight into his correspondence from 1832 through his death in 1882. Last, Notes and Jottings provides a glimpse of what impressed some who heard JND's verbal ministry. Together, these three provide a more complete picture of a beloved man and his private, personal and public ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the Whore of Babylon image found in the book of Revelation, with an emphasis upon the use and influence of the text on the Brethren of the nineteenth century. The Brethren developed a multi-layered exegesis of the text, using Babylon as a form of vituperative rhetoric through which to vilify all other Christians in order to define their own religious identity. Those with divergent doctrinal beliefs belonged to an epistemological Babylon; those polluted by the world belonged to secular Babylon. Babylon was contagious! It is from the pens of these writers that the Secret Rapture of the Church doctrine developed as a biological "fight or flight" response, and a psychological "fear and fantasy" response. Whilst the Brethren of the nineteenth century are the central focus, the book will have a wider appeal to those interested in the history of exegesis, hermeneutics, and Apocalypse studies, for it also offers an overview of hermeneutical approaches to the reading of Revelation, a survey of Babylon's "afterlife" throughout the history of the church, and new insights into the ways in which readers, texts, and contexts interact in the broader context of sectarian biblical exegesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the complex and turbulent relationship between B.W. Newton and J.N. Darby, the two principal leaders of the early Brethren movement. Burnham traces Darby's development of his prophetic system and his biblical literalism which led to his distinctive views on pretribulational, premillennial dispensationalism. Darby's eschatological views went on to have far-reaching effects on evangelicalism. While having much in common with Darby, Newton departed from him on key points. In 1845 the dispute between the two men intensified, leading to Darby founding a rival assembly in Plymouth. By the end of 1847, following debate over the orthodoxy of his christology, Newton seceded from the Brethren and left Plymouth. In many ways, Newton and Darby were products of their times, and this study of their relationship provides insight not only into the dynamics of early Brethrenism, but also into the progress of nineteenth-century English and Irish evangelicalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fervent millennial hope has often existed at the heart of Protestant evangelicalism. Varieties of eschatology have exercised a profound impact on the movementÕs theology and history. Although millennialism had a respected lineage within conservative Protestantism, it flourished with enormous energy in the early nineteenth century as evangelicals responded to the threat of the American and European revolutions and the cultural pessimism of the Romantic movement. By mid-century, the millennialism that had first been articulated for the defense of Protestant conservatism had paved the way for the subversion of historic theology and church practice, as a growing confidence in biblical inerrancy and the ÒliteralÓ hermeneutic challenged many of the historical assumptions of the evangelical faith. This volume of essays expands on neglected aspects of the impact of the evangelical millennialism in Britain and Ireland between 1800 and 1880, and includes an essay charting recent trends in the study of millennialism.
