Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Social Aims The proof - sheets showed that already before this accident his loss of memory and of mental grasp had gone so far as to make it unlikely that he would in any case have been able to accomplish what he had undertaken. Sentences, even whole pages, were repeated, and there was a confusion of order beyond what even he would have tolerated. Now, at any rate, nothing was to be thought of but rest and the attempt to restore the tone of his mind by some diversion. The Nile tour was suggested and made feasible by kind friends, and he wrote to England ex plaining the necessity for some delay. Soon after his return home he heard of the death of the English publisher, and supposed himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Letter and Social Aims Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letter and Social Aims Classic Reprint written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter and Social Aims The perception of matter is made the common-sense, and for cause. This was the cradle, this the go-cart, of the human child. We must learn the homely laws of fire and water; we must feed, wash, plant, build. These are ends of necessity, and first in the order of beadles and guardsmen that hold us to common-sense. The intellect yielded up to itself, cannot supersede this tyrannic necessity. The restraining grace of common-sense is the mark of all the valid minds, - of AEsop, Aristotle, Alfred, Luther, Shakspeare, Cervantes, Franklin, Napoleon. The common-sense which does not meddle with the absolute, but takes things at their word, - things as they appear, - believes in the existence of matter, not because we can touch it, or conceive of it, but because it agrees with ourselves, and the universe does not jest with us, but is in earnest, - is the house of health and life. In spite of all the joys of poets and the joys of saints, the most imaginative and abstracted person never makes, with impunity, the least mistake in this particular, - never tries to kindle his over with water, nor carries by the tail. We should not pardon the blunder in another, nor endure it in ourselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Download or read book Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson: Essays, First and Second Series, Representative Men, Society and Solitude, English Traits, the Conduct of Life, Letters and Social Aims, Poems, Miscellanies Embracing Nature, Addresses, and Lectures There is one mind common to all indi vidual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of. The same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought he may think; what a saint has felt lie may feel; what at any time has befallen any man, he can under stand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent. Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its genius is illustrated by the entire series of days. Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty, every thought, every emotion; which belongs to it in appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to the fact; all the facts of history pre-exist in the mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circum stances predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopaedia of facts. The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp, king dom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the applications of his manifold Spirit to the manifold world. Book Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume VIII Letters and Social Aims

Download or read book Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Volume VIII Letters and Social Aims written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters and Social Aims, published in 1875, contains essays originally published early in the 1840s as well as those that were the product of a collaborative effort among Emerson, his daughter Ellen Tucker Emerson, his son Edward Waldo Emerson, and his literary executor James Eliot Cabot. The volume takes up the topics of Poetry and Imagination, Social Aims, Eloquence, Resources, The Comic, Quotation and Originality, Progress of Culture, Persian Poetry, Inspiration, Greatness, and, appropriately for Emerson's last published book, Immortality. The historical introduction demonstrates for the first time the decline in Emerson's creative powers after 1865; the strain caused by the preparation of a poetry anthology and delivery of lectures at Harvard during this time; the devastating effect of a house fire in 1872; and how the Emerson children and Cabot worked together to enable Emerson to complete the book. The textual introduction traces this collaborative process in detail and also provides new information about the genesis of the volume as a response to a proposed unauthorized British edition of Emerson's works. Book British Letters Illustrative of Character and Social Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Letters Illustrative of Character and Social Life Classic Reprint written by Edward T. Mason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Letters, Illustrative of Character and Social Life The aim Of this work is to present certain phases of life and Character as described and exemplified by British letter-writers. While the search for materials has not been exhaust tive, it has been reasonably thorough. The number Of writers quoted is not particularly large; and that fact is a matter of indifference; for the end in view has not been to crowd the pages with distinguished names, but to insure the essential fitness Of the selections - a fitness consisting in their special adaptation to the plan Of the series. The peculiar Charm Of letters - perhaps, also, their greatest value - is brought home to us when they are familiar, unstudied expressions Of thought and feeling; when they betray no sense Of a larger audience than the friends for whom alone they were written. The contents Of these volumes do not uniformly maintain so high an excellence, but they exhibit many striking examples Of it. Letters which are known to have been intended for publication. Book Social Ideals in English Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Ideals in English Letters Classic Reprint written by Vida D. Scudder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Ideals in English Letters This book is to consider English literature in its social aspect. It will study the imaginative expression of some of the most interesting moments in the long struggle by which democracy and freedom are slowly realizing themselves, and the earth is becoming in substantial sense the heritage of all the children of men. We are living to-day in one of the most dramatic periods of that great struggle. Year by year adds new episodes to its history both written and unwritten, and quickens in earnest minds the sense of the special responsibility borne by our generation toward its solution. To allow the social questions which preoccupy us to invade even our enjoyment of poetry, essays, and novels may seem uninviting and needless; for many of us have a way of turning to books as an escape from life and its sorrows and puzzles. Yet if we are to dwell with pain and problem in considering the social bearing of some representative English books, we are to dwell with beauty also.
