Book Letters on Religious Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters on Religious Subjects Classic Reprint written by John Kendall and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Religious Subjects IT is thought that the friendly and familiar letters which are here collected, would not only be instructive and pleasant to those of the same religious society with the writers of them, but might tend to shew the disposition and views of this Society, better than a treatise written purposely in the defence of the principles professed by it. The reader will perceive an unfeigned love and affection to have prevailed in the minds of the writers, one towards another; and that their principal view was to promote the best interests of their friends. It will be seen also, that in thus expressing their sentiments on religious subjects, without any expectation of having them made public, they agree in all the essential principles of the religion of their great Lord and Master Jesus Christ, in whom alone their hope of salvation was placed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Greatness and Simplicity of the Christian Faith Letters is issued under an other title, because it has been found that the former title, Let ters to sunday-school Teachers, gave a wrong impression of the aim of the book, as a possible book of Sunday-school methods. The let ters were originally written for T be Pilgrim Teoc/zor, to help Sunday school teachers to see for them selves, and to put to their pupils as clearly and simply as possible, the great truths of the Christian faith. Book Letters to a Sceptic

Download or read book Letters to a Sceptic written by James Balmes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Sceptic: On Religious Matters The name of Balmes is well-known in the Republic of Letters. As philosopher, as polemic, as publicist, he occupies a distinguished place among the writers of the present century. Without counting numerous minor works of his, we have only to mention his "Fundamental Philosophy," his "Protestantism Compared with Catholicism," and his wonderful "Criterion," in proof of our assertion. With these books, however, we have nothing to do at present, as they do not come under our observation just now. Our remarks will be wholly confined to another production of his, called "Letters to a Sceptic." This volume is not a treatise on, nor an apology of, religion; it is simply a collection of letters written to a sceptic in religious matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Devout Meditations: Or a Collection of Thoughts Upon Religious and Philosophical Subjects How shall I sufficiently thank you for the favour and honour of your very valuable present. The Book of Meditations I have read, and more than once; and I shall never lay it far out of my reach for a greater demonstration of a sound head, and sincere heart, I never saw. Dear Sir, I cannot but return to my favourite Meditations; for, in truth, I am fond of them. I think you was a lucky man in meeting with the manuscript; and I know you was a worthy one, by bringing it to tile press. The world is your debtor for it. My part of the debt I will pay, as far as hearty thanks will go towards it: and I wish I could do more. But I am surprised that the author's name is suppressed: for I know no name to which: that work would not do an additional credits and; why a man's modesty should rob him of his just honour, when, by that honour, his modesty can be no more offended, I know not. I wish you would consider this, with regard to future editions. I desire you, Sir, to insert mo in the list of your friends, for such I am, and such I am obliged to be by your unexpected and unmeritted favour. Book What Is Religion And Other New Articles and Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Religion And Other New Articles and Letters Classic Reprint written by Lyof N. Tolstoi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Religion? And Other New Articles and Letters Religion 18 studied by this class of men not as some thing which we know through our inner experience, but as an external phenomenon, a disease as it were to which some people are subject, and which we can understand only in its external symptoms. Religion, according to some of these men, has sprung from the spiritualization of all the phenomena of nature (animism). According to others, from the idea of the possibility of communicating with departed ancestors. According to others again, from the fear of the powers of nature. And as science has proved - the scientists of our day further argue - that trees and stone cannot be animated, and deceased ancestors are no longer con scious of what the living do, and the phenomena of nature are explicable by natural causes, therefore the necessity for religion and for all those restraints which people impose upon themselves as the result of religious beliefs has disappeared. In the opinion of scientists there once existed a period of unenlightenment - the religious period. This was outlived by mankind long ago, but occasional atavistic symptoms remain. Then there came the metaphysical period, which also has been outlived. And now, we, the enlightened genera tions, live in the scientific period, - of positive science, - which replaces religion and leads mankind to a lofty degree of development which it could never have attained whilst it submitted to superstitious religious teaching. Book Solitude Sweetened Or Miscellaneous Meditations on Various Religious Subjects Written in Distant Parts of the World Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solitude Sweetened, or Miscellaneous Meditations on Various Religious Subjects, Written in Distant Parts of the World The greater part of them were written in the years 1757 - 1760, in the most unfavourable circumstances which can easily be conceived for study of any kind, and especially for religious meditation; not, like the Monthly Memorial, and the Secret Survey, amidst the quiet and comforts of home, in the retirement of the country, and during the intervals of leisure from the regular duties of his profession; but at sea, amidst the noise, and bustle, and Confusion of a man of war. A book written during hostilities, on board a ship Of war, may be considered as a literary curiosity; but this is perhaps the first heck of devotion ever composed in such circumstances. It may justly excite surprise, how the good man could find opportunity, or command composure of mind, in the cock-pit of the Portland, for writing not only the greater part of the present volume, but another series of Meditations, entitled, T he T rave] ler; and it must be particularly pleasing to pious minds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the nearly ninety emperors who ruled in Constantinople, Manuel II Palaeologus (r. 1391–1425) was one of the most sympathetic as a human being and one of the most gifted as a statesman. A man of broad intellectual interests, he was also dedicated to his God-given task of preserving what remained of the Byzantine Empire when he came to power. This conflict is reflected in his letters, written in such distant places as Ankara, Paris, and London. The correspondence provides new insights into his reign and enable us to understand better the emperor himself, his friends, and the times in which they lived.
