To these have been added five letters now in another private collection, making 221 in total. The letters are edited in transliteration and translation; the cuneiform is presented mostly in the form of photographs. The letters fall into five groups: (a) Nos. 1-32. Early Old Babylonian letters from the correspondence of Sumu-El and his officials, supplemented by a similar letter from Nūr-Adad, Sumu-El's successor. (b) Nos. 33-89. Other early Old Babylonian letters, all lacking greetings formula, on assorted administrative, business and private topics. (c) Nos. 90-219. Letters of the middle Old Babylonian period, among them many that are written in the distinctive script associated with the state of Larsa in the era of Rīm-S n. (d) No. 220. A letter with an extended greetings formula characteristic of the late Old Babylonian period. (e) No. 221. A letter with the physical characteristics and distinctive script of a document from the period of the first Sealand dynasty, no doubt part of the archive published by S. Dalley in CUSAS 9 (2009).

Sasson’s presentation is organized around major institutions in an ancient culture: (1) Kingship, treating accumulation of wealth, control of vassals, dynastic marriages, treaty-obligations, as well as illustrating the hazards and vexation of ruling a large territory; (2) Administration, from palaces that teem with bureaucrats, musicians, and cooks, to the management of provinces and vassal kingdoms; (3) Warfare, military establishment and martial practices; (4) Society, including organs of justice (and shortcuts to it), crime, punishment, and civil transactions; (5) Religion, including notices on diverse pantheons, rituals, priesthood, cultic paraphernalia, vows, ordeals, and channels to the gods (divination, dreams, and prophecy); and (6) Culture, including ethnic distinctions, class structure, and moments in the life cycle (birth, childhood, family life, health matters, death, and commemoration). Sasson’s presentation of the material brings to life a world entombed for four millennia, concretizes the realities of ancient life, and gives it a human perspective that is at once instructive and entertaining. The book is accompanied by extensive concordances and indexes (including to biblical passages) that will be useful to those who wish to study the letters more intensively.

Book excerpt: This book is the twelfth volume in the series Altbabylonische Briefe in Umschrift und Übersetzung, which wants to make the many - often dispersed - letters from the Old Babylonian period available in transliteration and translation. Volume 12 is the first in a short series of hitherto unpublished material in the British Museum. Two more volumes are planned. Most of the new letters presented here belong to one collection and can be split up into several archives. Two of these are of particular interest: the texts dealing with the exploits of the judge Ipqu-Nabium (2 ff.) and the archives around the trader Sin-erībam (51 ff.). The latter contains the correspondence between the Sippar-based Sin-erībam and his agent Awīl-ilim. The texts deal with the textile trade between Babylonia and northern Mesopotamia and provide us with a 'missing link' between the trade in the north (known from old Assyrian texts) and the textile industry in Babylonia.
