Although the slaveholders are small in numbers, their power is so great, that rarely a man, in a slave state, except one Of themselves, can be found bold enough to utter a word in favor Of freedom; and there is no leading interest to form the basis of combined action, unless it be the love of free dom, and this is not strong enough in the Slave states to secure unity of action, and hence all but slaveholders submit to be a degraded caste. But we have demonstration Of the power Of slaveholders in their political action beyond the limits Of their own states, and it is this we desire mainly to examine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union-State: A Letter to Our States-Rights Friend The production of these pages originated in a brief correspondence with a citizen of one of the North-western States, who had, in a recent publication, presented an argument in defense of the States of the Southern Confederacy in asserting a right to secede from the Union. In our discussion, the historical question of the actual political status of the thirteen States, at the time when the Constitution was proposed for ratification by them, seemed, to each of us, the question which required to be settled at the outset, as between ourselves. This question - we were agreed - could be decided only by historical evidence from the record, as distinguished from any assumptions, or any arguments, as to the merits or demerits of imaginable systems of government. On looking up this record-evidence, for use in our private correspondence, it seemed to require more verbal citation and careful reference to the accredited sources of information than could well be arranged in the usually indifferent style of epistolary writing. Black women in colonial and revolutionary New England sought not only legal emancipation from slavery but defined freedom more broadly to include spiritual, familial, and economic dimensions. Hidden behind the banner of achieving freedom was the assumption that freedom meant affirming black manhood The struggle for freedom in New England was different for men than for women. Black men in colonial and revolutionary New England were struggling for freedom from slavery and for the right to patriarchal control of their own families. Women had more complicated desires, seeking protection and support in a male headed household while also wanting personal liberty. Eventually women who were former slaves began to fight for dignity and respect for womanhood and access to schooling for black children.

The book is a history of the rich political ideas and languages that emerged from the tumultuous events and colourful individuals of this pivotal period in Irish history. Patriots, radicals, and republicans played key roles in the movements for free trade, legislative independence, parliamentary reform, Catholic relief and independence from Britain; and many of their ideas helped precipitate the rebellion in 1798. Stephen Small explains the ideological background to these issues, sheds new light on the origins of Irish republicanism, and places late eighteenth-century Irish political thought in the wider context of British, Atlantic, and European ideas. Dr Small argues that Irish patriotism, radicalism, and republicanism were constructed out of five key political 'languages': Protestant superiority, ancient constitutionalism, commercial grievance, classical republicanism, and natural rights. These political languages, which were Irish dialects of languages shared with the English-speaking and European world, combined in the late 1770s to construct the classic expression of Irish patriotism. This patriotism was full of contradictions, containing the seeds of radical reform, Catholic emancipation, and republican separatism - as well as a defence of Protestant Ascendancy. Over the next two decades, the American and French Revolutions, the reform movement, popular politicization, Ascendancy reaction, and Catholic political revival disrupted and transformed these languages, causing the fragmentation of a broad patriot consensus and the emergence from it of radicalism and republicanism. These developments are explained in terms of tensions and interactions between Protestant assumptions of Catholic inferiority, the increasing popularity of natural rights, and the enduring centrality of classical republican concepts of virtue to all types of patriot thought.
