Book Comic Acting and Portraiture in Late Georgian and Regency England

Download or read book Comic Acting and Portraiture in Late Georgian and Regency England written by Jim Davis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of the comic performers of late-Georgian and Regency England and their frequent depiction in portraits, caricatures and prints is beyond dispute, yet until now little has been written on the subject. In this unique study Jim Davis considers the representation of English low comic actors, such as Joseph Munden, John Liston, Charles Mathews and John Emery, in the visual arts of the period, the ways in which such representations became part of the visual culture of their time, and the impact of visual representation and art theory on prose descriptions of comic actors. Davis reveals how many of the actors discussed also exhibited or collected paintings and used painterly techniques to evoke the world around them. Drawing particularly on the influence of Hogarth and Wilkie, he goes on to examine portraiture as critique and what the actors themselves represented in terms of notions of national and regional identity.

Book In the Vale of Cashmere

Book excerpt: In the Vale of Cashmeremarks the culmination of acclaimed photographer Thomas Roma'sfour-year odyssey into a densely wooded, secluded corner of Brooklyn's Prospect Park, where gay cruising dominates the footpaths and trails. The Vale ofCashmere, a name that dates back to the 1890s, has long been a meeting place for gay men. and currently, mostly Black men. However, encounters occur between men of all walks of life, as well as gender and sexual identities. With his large, tripod-mounted, hand-made camera, Roma stepped into the center of this community, an obvious but mostly ignored presence. Understandably, many of the menRoma approached to photograph in a formal portrait were not interested, butsurprisingly, many were. After they agreed to be photographed, Roma would offer themen time and the opportunity to show him something of themselves they might nothave the chance to otherwise. Although originally conceived solely as a portrait project, the more time Romaspent in the Vale of Cashmere, the more the physical beauty of the Vale becameinseparable from the portraits, and many landscape photographs were made to beincluded in the book. In addition to the landscapes, Roma utilized a custom modified miniaturecamera to provide sequential pictures depicting the steady march of themostly solitary men as they cruised the paths and roadways of the Vale. These candidphotographs, which run along the bottom of the pages of landscape photographs, arereproduced in small scale so as to make it impossible to identify any individual. Roma's motivation for doing the project camefrom his wish to honor the memory of a dear friend who died of AIDS in 1991, andwho introduced him to the Vale of Cashmere.

Book A Biographical Dictionary of Actors Volume 1 Abaco to Belfille

Download or read book A Biographical Dictionary of Actors Volume 1 Abaco to Belfille written by Philip H. Highfill, Jr. and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1973-12 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobe completed in 12volumes, this monumental work here begins publication with the first two volumes--Abaco to Bertie and Bertin to Byzard. When completed, it is expected that the biographical dictionary will include information on more than 8,500 individuals. Hundreds of printed sources have been searched for this project, and dozens of repositories combed, and the names of personnel listed have been filtered through parish registers whenever possible. From published and unpublished sources, from wills, archives of professional societies and guilds, from records of colleges, universities, and clubs, and from the contributions of selfless scholars, the authors have here assembled material which illuminates theatrical and musical activity in London in the 1660-1800 period. The information here amassed will doubtless be augmented by other specialists in Restoration and eighteenth-century theatre and drama, but it is not likely that the number of persons now known surely or conjectured finally to have been connected with theatrical enterprise in this period will ever be increased considerably. Certainly, the contributions made here add immeasurably to existing knowledge, and in a number of instances correct standard histories or reference works. The accompanying illustrations, estimated to be some 1,400 likenesses--at least one picture of each subject for whom a portrait exists--may prove to be a useful feature of the Work. The authors have gone beyond embellishment of the text, and have attempted to list all original portraits any knowledge of which is now recoverable, and have tried to ascertain the present location of portraits in every medium.

Book Wasteland

Download or read book Wasteland written by Mary Corran and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wasteland: The Thief Within provides an understanding of illness, especially mental illness. If there is no obvious physical pain, how can it hurt so much, and why does it rob us of who we are? Some advise, "Just don't think about it" or take a pill to make it all better. This is the author's story about surviving a major crippling depression, and her equally inexplicable climb back to normal life. "I hope to share what helped, what didn't, and what it was really like, so fellow sufferers and mental health professionals can learn a little more from one patient's view." Just as cancer does not define a patient, neither does depression. Author Mary Corran asks: "Where does the lust for suicide begin? For me, it was when I was very young. How can that lust be satisfied? And what comes once that passion has weakened, and you have to make yourself into a new person to live a new life?" There are many questions needing answers. Once you have your new life, do you forget the old? How, without religion, do you make yourself into a new person? What values do you wish to encompass? And do you ever forget that lust for death? About the Author: Mary Corran lives in Eastbourne, England. She was living the high life in London as a stockbroker, was married, had just completed three fantasy novels and was working on the fourth, when she became sick. She divorced the husband, adopted two cats, moved to the coast, and instead of writing fiction again, hopes to help others with this book. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/MaryCorran
