Book excerpt: It is the duty, and ought to be the pleasure, of age and experience to warn and instruct youth and to come to the aid of inexperience. When sailors have discovered rocks or breakers, and have had the good luck to escape with life from amidst them, they, unless they be pirates or barbarians as well as sailors, point out the spots for the placing of buoys and of lights, in order that others may not be exposed to the danger which they have so narrowly escaped. What man of common humanity, having, by good luck, missed being engulfed in a quagmire or quicksand, will withhold from his neighbours a knowledge of the peril without which the dangerous spots are not to be approached? The great effect which correct opinions and sound principles, imbibed in early life, together with the good conduct, at that age, which must naturally result from such opinions and principles; the great effect which these have on the whole course of our lives is, and must be, well known to every man of common observation. How many of us, arrived at only forty years, have to repent; nay, which of us has not to repent, or has not had to repent, that he did not, at an earlier age, possess a great stock of knowledge of that kind which has an immediate effect on our personal ease and happiness; that kind of knowledge, upon which the cheerfulness and the harmony of our homes depend! It is to communicate a stock of this sort of knowledge, in particular, that this work is intended; knowledge, indeed, relative to education, to many sciences, to trade, agriculture, horticulture, law, government, and religion; knowledge relating, incidentally, to all these; but, the main object is to furnish that sort of knowledge to the young which but few men acquire until they be old, when it comes too late to be useful. Book Advice to a Young Man upon First Going to Oxford In Ten Letters From an Uncle to His Nephew

Download or read book Advice to a Young Man upon First Going to Oxford In Ten Letters From an Uncle to His Nephew written by Edward Berens and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It gives me sincere pleasure to hear that you have actually become a member of the University of Oxford. This satisfaction, perhaps, may in some degree be attributed to the pleasing recollection of my own Oxford life, but certainly it arises principally from anticipation of the substantial benefits which you, I trust, will derive from your connexion with that seat of learning. At the same time, I will own that my satisfaction is not entirely unmixed with something like apprehension. An University education has many and great advantages, but it also is attended with many temptations;—temptations to which too many young men have yielded, sometimes to the great injury of their character, and the utter ruin of all their future prospects. In fact, you are now entering upon the most important period—the turning point—of your whole life. You have become, in a great measure, your own master. For though you will be under a certain degree of discipline andsurveillance, yet in a multiplicity of cases you will have to act for yourself—to take your own line. You will have to contend against the allure ments of pleasure and dissipation, and you have just reached the age when the natural passions and appetites become most impatient of restraint. At the same time, you will be exposed to the influence both of the example and of the solicitations of lively young men, who will try to carry you along with them in their career of thoughtlessness and folly, and who will think it strange, and show you that they think it strange, if you run not with them to the same excess of riot. Against all these moral trials and temptations, your best safeguard will be found in a strong sense of religion, kept habitually present to your mind. You must endeavour, according to the language of Scripture—(and in writing to you I shall always gladly make use of the very words of Scripture, when they suit my purpose, as having a force and an authority which no other words can possess)—you must endeavour to set the Lord always before you. Never for a moment forget that you are continually in the presence of that awful Being, who can, and who will, call you to a strict account for all that you do amiss. Nothing can excuse your forgetting Him. If you at all believe in a Supreme Being, the Creator and Governor of the world; if you believe that God is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him, and at the same time an avenger to execute wrath upon every soul that doeth evil, the least particle of common sense or common feeling will tell you, that nothing should be put in competition with his will. When his will is clear, it must be obeyed without hesitation. I am sure that you will assent to this. If religion is any thing, it is every thing. It is, indeed, the one thing needful, in comparison with which every thing else sinks into insignificance, into nothingness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice to a Young Woman at Service: In a Letter From a Friend When I first heard that you had come to town, in order to go to service, I was exceedingly anxious for you. For several nights my sleep was disturbed, by thinking of the temptations to which you were expos ed among strangers in a great city. Your sister call ed yesterday, on her way home, and told me that you -had got into a respectable tamily. This good news relieved my mind very much; but still my-thoughts dwell upon the trials that every day will bring with it; for'you have left your native village, your pious parents, your snug and quiet home, and have placed yourself in a situation where every thing is new: you will therefore have other temptations to resist, and other exertions to make, than have ever been requir ed of you before. M y age and long experience, and especially my friendship for your mother, entitle me to some of your regard. I know that your disposition is good, and that you are ready to listen to advice. I have therefore determined, as I cannot conveniently come to you, to write you a letter; it will be a long one, and will cost me a good deal of pains, for I do not often write letters. I shall not expect you to read and destroy it, nor to lay it away in a drawer where it will not be seen; but keep it where you may fre quently look at its contents, and always remember that it was written by one who has lived many years, and experienced many changes, and can 'now say in her old age, that she has never been so happy as when she most nearly conformed to the rules which she now gives to you. Book excerpt: If you could send a letter back through time to your younger self, what would the letter say? In this moving collection, forty-one famous women write letters to the women they once were, filled with advice and insights they wish they had had when they were younger. Today show correspondent Ann Curry writes to herself as a rookie reporter in her first job, telling herself not to change so much to fit in, urging her young self, “It is time to be bold about who you really are.” Country music superstar Lee Ann Womack reflects on the stressed-out year spent recording her first album and encourages her younger self to enjoy the moment, not just the end result. And Maya Angelou, leaving home at seventeen with a newborn baby in her arms, assures herself she will succeed on her own, even if she does return home every now and then. These remarkable women are joined by Madeleine Albright, Queen Noor of Jordan, Cokie Roberts, Naomi Wolf, Eileen Fisher, Jane Kaczmarek, Olympia Dukakis, Macy Gray, and many others. Their letters contain rare glimpses into the personal lives of extraordinary women and powerful wisdom that readers will treasure. Wisdom from What I Know Now “Don’t let anybody raise you. You’ve been raised.” —Maya Angelou “Try more things. Cross more lines.” —Breena Clarke “Learn how to celebrate.” —Olympia Dukakis “You don’t have to be afraid of living alone.” —Eileen Fisher “Please yourself first . . . everything else follows.” —Macy Gray “Don’t be so quick to dismiss another human being.” —Barbara Boxer “Work should not be work.” —Mary Matalin “You can leave the work world—and come back on your own terms.” —Cokie Roberts “Laundry will wait very patiently.” —Nora Roberts “Your hair matters far, far less than you think” —Lisa Scottoline “Speak the truth but ride a fast horse.” —Kitty Kelley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age ten, Bradley Gallagher began writing letters to famous Americans asking them what they believe are the keys to success in life. As the project grew from a few interesting letters to more than 300 responses, each containing tips for success for young people from the perspectives of leaders in politics, law, business, journalism, education, entertainment, and athletics, Bradley made the decision to share these letters with other young people in Tips from the Top: Advice for a Young Person from 125 of America's Most Successful People. He sought each respondent's permission to include his or her letter in this book, with all profits from publication to be used to fund college scholarships for the children of fire fighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency personnel. Tips from the Top also contains each respondent's biography. The collective scope of these biographies demonstrates that success can be achieved regardless of one's beginning in life. The recommendations contained in these letters could be invaluable for a young person as he contemplates his future path in life.

Book Chekhov s Letters

Download or read book Chekhov s Letters written by Carol Apollonio and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the thirty volumes in the authoritative Academy edition of Chekhov's collected works, fully twelve are devoted to the writer's letters. This is the first book in English or Russian addressing this substantial—though until now neglected—epistolary corpus. The majority of the essays gathered here represent new contributions by the world's major Chekhov scholars, written especially for this volume, or classics of Russian criticism appearing in English for the first time. The introduction addresses the role of letters in Chekhov's life and characterizes the writer's key epistolary concerns. After a series of essays addressing publication history, translation, and problems of censorship, scholars analyze the letters' generic qualities that draw upon, variously, prose, poetry, and drama. Individual thematic studies focus on the letters as documents reflecting biographical, cultural, and philosophical issues. The book culminates in a collection of short, at times lyrical, essays by eminent scholars and writers addressing a particularly memorable Chekhov letter. Chekhov's Letters appeals to scholars, writers, and theater professionals, as well to a general audience.

Book Letters to Dinah

Download or read book Letters to Dinah written by Steve Boggs and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the author discovered that his oldest, closest friend was recovering from brain surgery, he made a decision. He decided to write her a letter every day for several months, to fill in some of the years that they had not spent together. By turns amusing, uplifting, humorous and sad, collectively they are inspirational. They are a testament to the fact that letter writing is not a lost art and remains on of the closest forms of communication. The stories are vignettes of travel (Mexico, Europe, Turkey among other places), anecdotes from his medical career and many regional tales that occurred simply by virtue of having lived in the South. Plus, coming to terms with his mothers growing dementia.
