Book The Collected Letters of William Morris Volume IV

Download or read book The Collected Letters of William Morris Volume IV written by William Morris and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s. Most eloquently voiced also are the complexities of his troubled marriage and his devotion to his epileptic daughter, Jenny, and his other daughter, May. But dominating all these themes, organizing and structuring them, are the Kelmscott Press and the building of Morris's important library of medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The letters record the way in which the Press becomes not only the center of Morris's aesthetic ambitions and achievements but also the site for his closest human relations and for much of his connecting with the makers of early modernism. The letters in Volumes III and IV are thoroughly annotated, and through texts and notes provide a new assessment of Morris's career. Included also, as appendices to Volume IV, are two important documents: the first, never before published, is F. S. Ellis's Valuation List of Morris's library, made after Morris's death, and the second, never before reprinted, is the text of what was to be Morris's final essay on socialism, published in April 1896. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: Dear Mr. Catterson Smith, I have much pleasure in being able to repeat to you what Morris said about the work you had done for him -- it was substantially to the effect that had it not been for your skill in developing and rendering the materials supplied to you for the woodcut illustrations of the Chaucer, the work could not have been carried through -- in fact he spoke in terms of unstinted praise of your share in it. I hope you may be successful in your present application, and that the Birmingham institution will have the good fortune to secure your services.

Book The Kelmscott Press

Download or read book The Kelmscott Press written by William S. Peterson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a quantitative point of view the achievement of the Kelmscott Press may not seem impressive: between 1891 and 1898 it produced fifty-two books and a set of specimen pages for another book. Yet each was remarkably beautiful. Designed by William Morris, printed on hand-presses, ornamented with initials and borders by Morris, and illustrated often by Edward Burne-Jones, these few Kelmscott Press books are famous everywhere today. Why they have so profoundly affected twentieth-century theories of book design and what cultural significance the founding of the Kelmscott Press played are some of the questions the author considers.

Book Pre Raphaelite Art in the Victoria and Albert Museum

Download or read book Pre Raphaelite Art in the Victoria and Albert Museum written by Suzanne Fagence Cooper and published by Victoria & Albert Museum. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The V&A holds one of the largest collections of Pre-Raphaelite art in Britain. Its breadth and variety enables this new book to bring together works in many different media to show how Pre-Raphaelite art developed and found its unique voice. Whether painted furniture, book illustrations, textiles or tiles, the decorative arts were as important as the now famous oil paintings in developing the distinctive Pre-Raphaelite style and were also instrumental in bringing their work to a wide audience. The V&A collection is also rich in drawings and photographs, and all these combine to bring alive the working practices and sources of inspiration - from choice of models to literature, history and the natural world - which linked artists such as Edward Burne-Jones, William Homan Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and John Everett Millais. The result is a new and fresh approach to the work of the Pre-Raphaelites, and one that will reinforce their enduring popularity.

Book The Letters of Philip Webb

Download or read book The Letters of Philip Webb written by John Aplin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 1600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Webb (1831-1915) was a British architect known as a founder of the Arts and Crafts movement and also a key member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. He was an important figure in the literary and artistic world of the late-nineteenth century. Webb had a long association, both professionally and personally, with William Morris and his family as well as becoming treasurer of Morris's revolutionary Socialist League. They first met as trainees in the same architect's practice and remained collaborators throughout their lifetimes. Webb was responsible for the design of the hugely influential Red House, the Morris's first home. It was through Morris that Webb became connected with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, amongst others. Webb and Morris were also joint founders of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), the first organization to promote conservation rather than intrusive restoration. This comprehensive selection from Webb's surviving letters includes many important and previously unpublished letters to some of his closest associates. They reveal the wide range of his professional and personal interests. These four volumes will be of interest to art and architecture historians, scholars of Victorian history in general and of William Morris and the wider Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements in particular.
