Book Lincoln s Greatcoat

Download or read book Lincoln s Greatcoat written by Reignette G. Chilton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brooks Brothers crafted Abraham Lincoln's greatcoat in honor of the president's second inauguration. The coat's wool was "finer than cashmere." Its quilted silk lining bore an embroidered banner that read, "One Country, One Destiny." Lincoln wore the garment when he was assassinated on April 14, 1865. After his death, Mrs. Lincoln gave the greatcoat to a faithful doorkeeper. The coat was returned to Ford's Theatre more than a century after her bequest, but not before it underwent a mysterious journey. This book recounts that journey as a reminder of the 16th president and his call to "bind up wounds" and care for others.

Book excerpt: The exploits of the twentieth, twenty-first, twenty-second, and twenty-third (Service) Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers during the Great War—“Harder Than Hammers.” Although called the Tyneside Scottish, very few of the men who made up this Brigade were of Scottish descent. Many came from local villages or were from the Northumberland pits. They saw action at the Battle of the Somme and after it were allowed to put tartan behind their cap badges because of their bravery. “This remarkable product of much research includes lists of those who received gallantry awards and of officers and other ranks. It is an informative book which will be of great help to anyone researching the Tyneside Scottish during WWI and which will also act as a keepsake for those who have a particular interest in the regiments.” —Northumberland & Durham Family History Society

Book You Let Some Girl Beat You

Download or read book You Let Some Girl Beat You written by Ann Meyers Drysdale and published by Behler Publications. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Annie was one of the best players ever. I didn't say male or female; I said ever."—Bill Russell, former Boston Celtics player Ann Meyers Drysdale is one of the greatest stars in the history of basketball. But her rise wasn't without controversy. Her 1979 NBA bid to play with the Indiana Pacers brought a barrage of criticism. But Ann simply wanted to play among the best. She had always competed with the guys, and she never let anyone keep her down. In You Let Some Girl Beat You? she shares her inspirational story for the first time. A female first in many categories, Meyers Drysdale was the first woman ever signed to a four-year athletic scholarship to UCLA, where she remains the only four-time Bruin basketball All American, male or female. Ann was also the only woman ever asked to compete in ABC Sports' Superstars, pitting her against elite athletes like Mark Spitz, Joe Frazier, O.J. Simpson, and Mark Gastineau. After her athletic career Ann Meyers Drysdale went on to do color commentary on all the national stations. She also married Don Drysdale, legendary pitcher and announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, making them the first ever married couple enshrined in their respective sport's Hall of Fame. Today Ann continues to break through barriers. She is the only female vice president in the NBA (she is vice president of the Phoenix Suns), and is also the general manager of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, which has won two WNBA championships since she took over four years ago. The New York Times featured her prominently in a piece in August 2011 called "Pioneers Continue to Shepherd Women's Basketball." Time magazine recently named her one of the ten greatest female athletes of all time.

Book Sir James Whitelocke s Liber Famelicus 1570 1632

Download or read book Sir James Whitelocke s Liber Famelicus 1570 1632 written by Damian Xavier Powell and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir James Whitelocke (1570-1632) was one of the most distinguished and politically intriguing figures of his age. His Liber Famelicus, compiled over the course of a long and controversial career as parliamentarian and judge, offers extraordinary insights into religion and politics in an age not noted for its political candour. Whitelocke's early political theories on the king-in-parliament, and later judicial pronouncements on Crown legal rights, presage constitutional issues facing parliament and the Crown in 1642. A study of Whitelocke's life sheds valuable light on the character and causes of constitutional disagreement before the Civil Wars. This book explains Whitelocke's political views, exploring the place of law in seventeenth-century political thought. It questions his dual formation in English and civil law, his colourful and controversial years in the parliament and the courts of law, and his professional connections with such powerful figures as Archbishop William Laud. The result is a much-needed case study of a figure whose views defy simple explanations, illuminating the salient questions facing the English political nation in the early Stuart era.
