Book Benjamin Disraeli Letters

Download or read book Benjamin Disraeli Letters written by Benjamin Disraeli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1982-04-01 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The private letters of a statesman are always inviting material for historians and when he has claim to literary fame as well the correspondence assumes a double significance. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) belonged to an age that gave pride of place to the written word as an instrument of both business and pleasure. This volume includes 363 letters (many previously unpublished) from his school boy days to his establishment in the Tory camp under the patronage of Lord Lyndhurst. Most prominent are Disraeli's letters to his sister, Sarah, with whom he corresponded frequently over several decades. To her he confided his hopes, interspersed with his observations and descriptions of social, literary and political events. The letters to Sarah supply a skeleton around which Disraeli's young manhood can be reconstructed and shed valuable light on the remaining documents in the volume. The correspondence also includes accounts of his tour of the Low Countries and the Rhine in 1824, his adventurous trip to Spain, Greece, the Near East and Egypt in 1830, his tense negotiations with publishers and his campaign to shine as a member of aristocratic society and win political patronage. The letters demonstrate the fine eye for detail and the capacity for self-dramatization and literary conceits which mark his novels. With their annotations they also provide a remarkably detailed account of life in the upper reaches of English society as viewed from below, and of Disraeli's ambitions to enter that life.

Book excerpt: Using in-depth case studies, Can’t Just Stop examines the science behind both mild and extreme compulsive behavior—“a fascinating read about human behavior and how it can go haywire” (The Charlotte Observer). Whether shopping with military precision or hanging the tea towels just so, compulsion is something most of us have witnessed in daily life. But compulsions exist along a broad continuum and, at the opposite end of these mild forms, exist life-altering disorders. Sharon Begley’s meticulously researched book is the first to examine all of these behaviors together—from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to hoarding, to compulsive exercise, even compulsions to do good. They may look profoundly different, but these behaviors are all ways of coping with varying degrees of anxiety. Sharing personal stories from dozens of interviewees, “Begley combines a personal topic with thoughtfulness and sensitivity” (Library Journal) and gives meaningful context to their plight. Along the way she explores the role of compulsion in our fast-paced culture, the brain science behind it, and strange manifestations of the behavior throughout history. Can’t Just Stop makes compulsion comprehensible and accessible, with “fresh insight that could fundamentally alter how we think of, and treat, mental illness going forward” (Publishers Weekly).

Book Isaac D Israeli on Books

Download or read book Isaac D Israeli on Books written by Isaac Disraeli and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Benjamin Disraeli was of the opinion that he was born in a library. The library, reputed to have consisted of some 25,000 volumes, was that of his father, Isaac D'Israeli, a prolific and extremely popular author of essays, poems, novels, romances, reviews, and literary and historical studies. Over a lifetime extending from the reign of George III to that of Queen Victoria, Isaac D'Israeli had much to say about books, about their nature, production, and dissemination, and about their socio-political and ethical impact in times past and present. Emanating from his comprehensive world-view and unquenchable curiosity, the essays in this volume demonstrate D'Israeli's "honest desire of giving useful pleasure" and above all his conviction that books form the character of a civilization."--BOOK JACKET.
