Book excerpt: In preparation for the opening of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary on Oct. 3, 1859, Boyce wrote that they had ordered books "chiefly from Smith English & Co., Philadelphia. We have divided the text book list, however, so as to send to Sheldon & Co. for a part of the works. I enclose you a rough list used in jotting down. I have directed Smith English & Co. to wait three to five days for a letter from you so that you may add what you think best. We have ordered nothing except for the use of students thus far. When we get these works and get together, we can then order for ourselves but we shall not have much to do it with. Manly and Williams are here and settled."

She will sail about the last of next week or first of the week after." Explained how to mark the furniture "to the care of the house you wish to consign to in Charlestown, of course putting on it the name of final consignee. If you will let us know what day the furniture will be in Richmond, we will go to the depot and give instructions in regard to having it put on board vessel." Aug. 27. Answering his inquiry, they advised him to ship his "whole shipment at one time," and asked if he wished to pay the freight "here or in Charleston." Broadus was moving from Charlottesville, Va. to Greenville, S.C. to become one of the first professors in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I have heard that they have called William Thomas at last for the pastor of the church. They have not received an answer." Abram Burwell Brown succeeded Broadus as pastor of the Charlottesville Baptist Church when he resigned to become a professor in the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

[Furman University?] work, for this he agrees would do me but little good ... It is much easier for Toy to advise me to such a course than it would be to follow it himself, I think, were he in my fix."

Johnson and he had mounted to assist John William Jones toward going as a Southern Baptist missionary to Japan. Johnson had made "considerable progress. We have discussed the matter, and it seemed best under the circumstances that Jones should go to Greenville [as a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary student] instead of teaching school next session ... What do you think of the scheme? It would give you one more student from Virginia at the first session. I have been talking with Johnson on the propriety of his going to the Seminary next session." Jones attended the Seminary, and was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, to Canton, but was prevented from sailing by the outbreak of the Civil War. He served as Chaplain during the war, and pastored after that.

I begin to love her myself and would be glad to hear you had let the news out and were making arrangements accordingly." John A. Broadus married Charlotte E. Sinclair, affectionately known as "Lottie", his second wife, Jan. 4, 1859.
