Book excerpt: Wrote his critical opinion of an address Broadus had written: "It is the language of a student, and admirably suited to a theological or advanced Bible class. Unfortunately but few of our church members have the judgment and taste to appreciate, and the time and patience to adopt your suggestions." He closed with the information: "Manly mentioned to me that Boyce desired the committee to prepare the plan of the Theo. Sem. to meet in Greenville. If anything worthy of the cause is to be done, the committee should have a meeting, and take full time for deliberation. As a man should not go to war at his own charges, if you and Manly should go before the convention, I will aid in securing the "sinews of war." ["Endless money forms the sinews of war." Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC), Philippics].
