Book excerpt: Benjamin Hawkins, U.S. Agent to the Creeks, writes to Georgia Governor Peter Early (1813-1815) on April 21, 1815. Hawkins reports that "hostile" Indians (probably rebel Creeks and Seminoles) have made five attacks since the news of peace (evidently the end of the War of 1812). He says that the chiefs convened and determined to send parties out to stop the attacks. Hawkins also includes an excerpt from a report of William Hardridge. Hardridge traveled to the British garrison near John Forbe's trade store at Prospect Bluff by the mouth of the Apalachicola River and waited for the return of Colonel Edward Nicolls. While at the fort, Hardridge spoke with Captain Ross and inquired about runaway slaves. He saw runaway slaves, who were granted their freedom by the British, as well as Indians inside the garrison. Hardridge also noted that provisions were scarce and Indians in the area were subsisting largely on alligators. Ross told Hardridge that the party of Indians who recently killed and robbed a man were from Fowltown, and they acted four days before peace was declared. Ross claimed that since then, the British have ordered the Indians to stop fighting and go home, and he told Hardridge that U.S. troops within the Creek Nation must remove themselves.

Hawkins reports that "hostile" forces, comprised of numbers of Indians, blacks and whites, are fortifying their stations east of the Apalachicola River and are still connected with the Spanish and the British. Hawkins further states that the President of the U.S. has accepted his resignation as Superintendent of Indian Affairs and that (Christian?) Limbaugh will temporarily take over the post. Hawkins makes reference to an upcoming meeting between a number of Indian groups and the British and indicates to Early that the Indians "friendly" to the U.S. are naked and starving, increasing the likelihood that some might turn to the British for relief. In addition, Hawkins includes a quotation from a Red Stick chief who was with the British during a recent battle (possibly the Battle of New Orleans) against General Andrew Jackson in which great numbers were killed and wounded.

Hawkins says that it is generally believed that there will be peace soon, especially since the defeat of the British at New Orleans. He says that unnamed Indians (probably rebel Creeks and Seminoles) to the south are afraid and in need of food and that they have fled the area. He plans to send out parties and believes that they will find many of the Indians at Miccosukee (also Mikasuki). Hawkins mentions that Woodbine may not truly be an officer and also complains about Colonel Edward Nicolls. He further reports that he has heard word that the Governor of Pensacola has sent an armed vessel for someone named McGill and "the Spanish Negroes."

He writes that he is also enclosing papers (no longer attached) relative to the collusion of runaway slaves from Georgia and British forces in Pensacola, and he suspects that these fugitives are being aided by the "hostile" Seminoles. He mentions both General Thomas Pinckney and Major Cook and says that he will need their permission to move the mounted infantry into the field. Hawkins points out the need for an able commander from Georgia whom the Indians and the regular soldiers will obey, and he says that if necessary he himself will command them. Hawkins also mentions a letter from General Andrew Jackson. He closes the letter by noting that Captain Timpoochee Barnard's regiment is ready for service.

McIntosh reports that the Seminole chiefs expressed their peaceable disposition towards him and their willingness to return any runaway slaves that sought refuge in their territory. He also says that once he arrived in Florida he found that the British had left Apalachicola for Pensacola. Furthermore, Red Stick Creek leaders (herein referred to as "Red Clubs") Peter McQueen, Josiah Francis (Hillis Hadjo) and Emautlau Haujo are said to have recanted, expressing a desire to be forgiven and return to the nation. He goes on to say that he has heard through an unnamed Indian source that the British force that was defeated at Fort Bowyer had returned to Pensacola and that the British forces' Indian allies were losing confidence in them.

Book excerpt: This is an unsigned letter dated January 4, 1815 that is purportedly from Colonel Benjamin Hawkins, U.S. Agent to the Creeks, to Creek leader General William McIntosh and may be an extract. The document contains the information of the Speaker of the Lower Creeks indicating that a chief warrior led a party towards the frontier of Georgia, killed five white people, and carried their scalps to the British just below the confluence of the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers. The speaker also said that there were a few white troops at Forbes's store, on the Appalachicola River, along with some Choctaw warriors from Fort Jackson. Runaway and stolen slaves were also reportedly nearby, and provisions, especially meat, were very scarce.

Jackson explains that Ashley's father's plantation had been attacked by unnamed Indians, and he sends him with this letter to meet Mitchell in Milledgeville.
