Book People in Crisis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lee Ann Hoff
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2011-02-25
  • ISBN : 1135853525
  • Pages : 637 pages

Download or read book People in Crisis written by Lee Ann Hoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of People in Crisis, published in 1978, established success as a comprehensive and user-friendly text for health and social service professionals. The book and its following incarnations included critical life events and life cycle transition challenges, clearly pointing out the interconnections between such events, stressful developmental changes, and their potential for growth but also danger of suicide and/or violence toward others. This revised edition includes new case examples and expanded coverage of cross-cultural content, including 'commonalities and differences' in origins, manifestations, and crisis responses. The authors illustrate the application of crisis concepts, assessment, and intervention strategies across a wide range of health and mental health settings, as well as at home, school, workplace, and in the community. Each chapter contains a closing summary that includes discussion questions, references, and online data sources for maximum application and learning. Updated chapters discuss new, research-based content on: • workplace violence and abuse • youth violence in schools and higher education settings • the use of psychotropic drugs, including for very young children in the absence of comprehensive assessment • the crisis vulnerability of war veterans and the hazards of 'pathologizing' what should be considered a 'normal' response to the repeated and catastrophic trauma of war • the intersection of socio-political factors with individuals’ psychological healing from catastrophic experiences such as war and natural disaster.

  • ISBN : 3839448271
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Moving Images written by Krista Lynes and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, spectacular images of ruined boats, makeshift border camps, and beaches littered with life vests have done much to consolidate the politics of movement in Europe. Indeed, the mediation of migration as a crisis has worked to shore up various forms of militarized surveillance, humanitarian response, legislative action, and affective investment. Bridging academic inquiry and artistic and activist practice, the essays, documents, and artworks gathered in Moving Images interrogate the mediation of migration and refugeeism in the contemporary European conjuncture, asking how images, discourses, and data are involved in shaping the visions and experience of migration in increasingly global contexts.

Book Contentious Migrant Solidarity

Download or read book Contentious Migrant Solidarity written by Donatella della Porta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of both the financial crisis and the crisis of European migration politics, the notion of solidarity has gained renewed prominence and - as this book argues - its practice has become increasingly contentious. Intersecting crises have sharpened social and political polarization and have contracted simultaneously the space for migrant and minority rights as well as the rights around political dissent. Building upon social movement and migration studies, this book maps the two sides of ‘contentious solidarity’: a shrinking civic space and its contestation by civil society. The book thereby unfolds the variety of repressive means (physical, legal, administrative and discursive) employed by governmental and non-governmental bodies against migrant solidarity, but also looks at how civil society organizations react to these restrictions through at times moderation and at times increasing contention. The diagnosis of ‘contentious solidarity’ is located within two broader trends affecting the relationship between the state and civil society in a neoliberal context in general and since the financial crisis in particular. Bridging studies on social movement studies and civil society organizations, this volume contributes to recent reflections on repression of social movements as well as of a hybridization of civil society organizations. Given its broad scope and the utmost timeliness of the issues it addresses, the volume will be of interest to a broad academic and non-academic audience.
