Download or read book Let Us Learn Tamil written by S. Raman and published by Pustaka Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Tamil Lessons are targeted for such readers, so they may pick up the rudimentary Tamil language reading and writing skills. Instructions are given in English, with a bit of Hindi/Sanskrit letter symbols that could help in near-correct pronunciation. However, a bit of help from a good Tamil-speaking person will go a long way for the readers. More so, the readers are strongly advised not only to read but also to write down these lessons, as a matter of practice. After all, there is no more truth than the one conveyed by the old Tamil saying, “chiththiramum kaip pazhakkam, senthamizhum naap pazhakkam” (skill of writing is enhanced by handwriting, as the skill of speaking good Tamil is done through oral utterances).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reference grammar of the standard spoken variety of Tamil, a language with 65 million speakers in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. The spoken variety is radically different from the standard literary variety, last standardized in the thirteenth century. The standard spoken language is used by educated people in their interactions with people from different regions and different social groups, and is also the dialect used in films, plays and the media. This book, a much expanded version of the author s Grammar of Spoken Tamil (1979), is the first such grammar to contain examples both in Tamil script and in transliteration, and the first to be written so as to be accessible to students studying the modern spoken language as well as to linguists and other specialists. The book has benefitted from extensive native-speaker input and the author s own long experience of teaching Tamil to English-speakers.

Download or read book Tamil Brahmans written by C. J. Fuller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tamil Brahmans were a traditional, mainly rural, high-caste elite who have been transformed into a modern, urban, middle-class community since the late nineteenth century. Many Tamil Brahmans today are in professional and managerial occupations, such as engineering and information technology; most of them live in Chennai and other Tamilnadu towns, but others have migrated to the rest of India and overseas. This book, which is mainly based on the authors ethnographic research, describes and analyses this transformation. It is also a study of how and why the Tamil Brahmans privileged status within a hierarchical society has been perpetuated in the face of both a strong anti-Brahman movement in Tamilnadu, and a series of wider social, cultural, economic, political, and ideological changes that might have been expected to undermine their position completely. The major topics discussed include Brahman rural society, urban migration and urban ways of life, education and employment, the position of women, and religion and culture. The Tamil Brahmans class position, including the internal division into the upper- and lower-middle classes, and the process of class reproduction, are examined closely to analyze the congruence between Tamil Brahmanhood and middle classness, which as comparison with other Brahman and non-Brahman groups shows is highly unusual in contemporary India."

Download or read book Tamil Folk Music as Dalit Liberation Theology written by Zoe C. Sherinian and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoe C. Sherinian shows how Christian Dalits (once known as untouchables or outcastes) in southern India have employed music to protest social oppression and as a vehicle of liberation. Her focus is on the life and theology of a charismatic composer and leader, Reverend J. Theophilus Appavoo, who drew on Tamil folk music to create a distinctive form of indigenized Christian music. Appavoo composed songs and liturgy infused with messages linking Christian theology with critiques of social inequality. Sherinian traces the history of Christian music in India and introduces us to a community of Tamil Dalit Christian villagers, seminary students, activists, and theologians who have been inspired by Appavoo's music to work for social justice. Multimedia components available online include video and audio recordings of musical performances, religious services, and community rituals.
Download or read book Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers written by Paul Moorcraft and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, the Sri Lankan government forces literally eradicated the Tamil Tiger insurgency after 26 years of civil war. This was the first time that a government had defeated an indigenous insurgency by force of arms. It was as if the British army killed thousands of IRA cadres to end the war in Northern Ireland. The story of this war is fascinating in itself, besides the international repercussions for terrorism and insurgency worldwide. Many countries involved themselves in the war to arm the combatants (China, Pakistan, India, and North Korea) or to bring peace (US, France, UK, and Norway). While researching this work Professor Moorcraft was given unprecedented access to Sri Lankan politicians (including the President and his brother, the Defense Permanent Secretary), senior generals, intelligence chiefs, civil servants, UN officials, foreign diplomats and NGOs. He also interviewed the surviving leader of the Tamil Tigers. His conclusions and findings will be controversial. He reveals how the authorities determined to stamp out Tamil Tiger resistance by whatever means frustrated the media and foreign mediators. Their methods, which have led to accusations of war crimes, were brutally effective but are likely to remain highly contentions for years to come.

Download or read book Nine Rupees An Hour Disappearing Livelihoods of Tamil Nadu written by Aparna Karthikeyan and published by Westland. This book was released on with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book THIS MUCH-FETED BOOK RETURNS IN A STRIKING, ALL-NEW COVER! A NUANCED AND MUCH-NEEDED REPORT FROM THE GROUND ON TAMIL NADU, AND INDEED INDIA’S, ENDANGERED LIVELIHOODS. In a rapidly urbanising nation, rural India is being erased from the popular imagination. Through her five years of travelling across the villages of Tamil Nadu, Aparna Karthikeyan gets to know men and women who do exceptional—yet perfectly ordinary—things to earn a living. She documents, through ten of these stories, the transformations, aspirations and disruptions of the last twenty-five years. The people she meets force these questions of her, and her reader: What is the culture we seek to preserve? What will become of food security without farmers? How can ‘development’ exclude 833 million people? Including interviews with journalist P. Sainath, musician T.M. Krishna and writer Bama, among others, Nine Rupees an Hour is a critical portrayal of the drastic and systematic erosion of traditional livelihoods. ‘These engaging narratives unravel a peoples’ perspective of work and life, where creative beauty and human dignity merge to matter, even if their worth in market-obsessed economics is merely nine rupees an hour. Evocative and relevant, they jostle our comfort. Statistics and economic analyses of wages and work, juxtaposed with the lives people lead, help us understand the situation on the ground. A book all of us must read.’ —Aruna Roy, Social activist ‘Sustainable livelihoods provide the foundation for a happy life. We owe a deep sense of gratitude to Aparna Karthikeyan for bringing out this useful book based on real-life examples. I hope the book will be widely read.’ —M.S. Swaminathan, plant geneticist and agricultural scientist
