Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let Them Eat Grass is a historical fiction concerning the tragedy of the Sioux Indians trying to save their land as well as the lives of their people. In 1858, Tianci, a Hunkpapa Sioux, participated in the annual dance-in-the-sun ceremony. In the vision he had, he saw a white buffalo that beckoned Tianci to follow him to the East where many White people had settled. Tianci travels to Chief Little Crow’s village in Minnesota where the situation between the Whites and the Indians is very fragile. Little Crow and his tribal members teach Tianci to speak the English language. Tianci marries Tacincadan, and they have a daughter, Kimama. Tianci is hired by Colonels Sibley and Barrett to be a guide. Visiting the Indian Agency, Tianci notices the corruption of the White agents selling the Indians’ food to other Whites. He warns the colonels about the situation that could lead to warfare. When Little Crow visits the Indian Agency and asks for the food promised to the Indians because of the land the Whites had claimed, Little Crow is told that there is no food for the Indians. When Little Crow asks what he should feed his people, Andrew Myrick mocks him, saying, “Let them eat grass or dung for all I care.” Warfare ensues. When soldiers under Colonel Barrett’s command accidentally kill Tacincadan and Kimama, Tianci desires to take revenge on Colonel Barrett. He captures Colonel Barrett’s two daughters as well as two soldiers. He releases the two soldiers and the older sister but keeps Charissa, claiming she will become his wife. Then he takes Charissa to Little Crow’s village. Much more unexpected drama follows. Let Them Eat Grass is based on historical research though some of the characters are fictional. Read this book to find out what happens to the main characters and to better understand the plight of not only the Sioux but most Native Americans in the treatment they received from the Whites.

Book Tony Allen

  • Author : Tony Allen
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2013-09-27
  • ISBN : 0822377098
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Tony Allen written by Tony Allen and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Allen is the autobiography of legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, the rhythmic engine of Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. Conversational, inviting, and packed with telling anecdotes, Allen's memoir is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the musician and scholar Michael E. Veal. It spans Allen's early years and career playing highlife music in Lagos; his fifteen years with Fela, from 1964 until 1979; his struggles to form his own bands in Nigeria; and his emigration to France. Allen embraced the drum set, rather than African handheld drums, early in his career, when drum kits were relatively rare in Africa. His story conveys a love of his craft along with the specifics of his practice. It also provides invaluable firsthand accounts of the explosive creativity in postcolonial African music, and the personal and artistic dynamics in Fela's Koola Lobitos and Africa 70, two of the greatest bands to ever play African music.

Book Aussie Soldier

Download or read book Aussie Soldier written by Denny Neave and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in the Aussie Soldier series, Aussie Soldier: Prisoners of War by Denny Neave and Craig Smith, details the lives of the men and women who found themselves on the wrong side of the wire. This collection of heartfelt stories and anecdotes from Australian POWs will take you on their very personal journeys. Surviving as a prisoner of war required as much strength of character as any hard fought battle. Some lived to tell their tales about extreme suffering, mateship and hardship and many would carry with them forever the memories of those who died. Almost 35,000 Australian service personnel were taken prisoner during the Boer War, World War 1, World War 2 and the Korean War. As POWs are relatively few in number, their stories often take a back seat when it comes to tales about battles and conflict situations. Like most soldiers, former prisoners do not like reliving the horrors of war and their time in captivity. This is a collection of the stories of our Australian POWs. Interviews, questionnaires, written records, images and letters provide an insight into captivity and the joy and fears that came with their release. These vivid and compelling stories highlight the contradictions of war: the compassion and generosity on the one hand and the cruelty, hate and indifference on the other.

Book The Many Faces of Biblical Humor

Download or read book The Many Faces of Biblical Humor written by David A. Peters and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Many Faces of Biblical Humor examines how the Bible writers intentionally used humor, irony, and sarcasm to argue their points concisely. This work begins with the dysfunctional families of Genesis, continues delightfully through every book of the Bible, and ends with a glorious fulfillment in Revelation. Along the way, the reader is presented humorous stories, pathetically funny characters, and poignant quips and quotes from prophets, poets, and principals. The author paraphrases each biblical text in an engaging prose that highlights the humor of that passage--humor that may not have been previously noted by the reader. Between the paraphrases, the author sets the historical and linguistic setting, allowing the reader to see how the humor (and puns) of the text enrich the biblical understanding of God's message. Also included are applications of these marvelous passages to our daily lives as we see our own foibles portrayed in the biblical characters. In many ways, this is a Bible commentary with an accent on the humorous. In another sense, it is simply a delightful book that makes the Bible come alive through the latent humor of its characters and their stories. This revised edition contains corrections of typographical errors in the first edition as well as some clarifying material to make the humor more enjoyable. Book excerpt: Wakpa Minisota! focuses upon the power of love, prayer, and spiritualism to overcome the ravages of fear, hatred, and war. Wayuhi saw the great tenebrous form of Uŋkteh˙i emerge from the depths of the lake. It stood looking at him with its big shaggy ears standing straight outward giving it the illusion of even greater size with water dripping profusely from its long curved white-ivory tusks as it raised its great trunk and blew water into the sky then emitted a deep infrasonic sound that Wayuhi could not hear but could feel in his bones. The sound created a circle of vibratory waves on the water emanating from the monolith that Wayuhi felt as soothing timbres of empathy, a feeling of pure deep love filled his body. As the immense Wooly Mammoth turned and submerged back into the depths of the lake, Wayuhi saw the ephemeral image of the Ancient Ones who had taken the form of Uŋkteh˙i as he heard them say, "These are the Ways of the Isaŋti Warrior, the true path to freedom!" When all was gone, he could once again see the reflection on the lake of the Land Beyond and the dark blanket-shrouded shadows of his people as they walked toward the campfires of the Wanaġi Taćaŋku-Ghost Road, called the Milky Way by the Waśićuŋ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the latest unscientific research into the smoking and swearing habits of animals. The verses and pictures themselves are of uncertain origin. Some say they derive from ancient folk tales, others say they don't, and that someone just made them up for a laugh. The truth remains shrouded in mystery. In this volume pretend scholar K.T. Capstone has brought together all the existing versions of the tales; we are indebted to Capstone for the preservation of these extraordinary works, at once poignant and pointless, momentous yet totally meaningless. Book Our History Is the Future

Download or read book Our History Is the Future written by Nick Estes and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awards: One Book South Dakota Common Read, South Dakota Humanities Council, 2022. PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, PEN America, 2020. One Book One Tribe Book Award, First Nations Development Institute, 2020. Finalist, Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize, 2019. Shortlist, Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize, 2019. Our History Is the Future is at once a work of history, a personal story, and a manifesto. Now available in paperback on the fifth anniversary of its original publication, Our History Is the Future features a new afterword by Nick Estes about the rising indigenous campaigns to protect our environment from extractive industries and to shape new ways of relating to one another and the world. In this award-winning book, Estes traces traditions of Indigenous resistance leading to the present campaigns against fossil fuel pipelines, such as the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, from the days of the Missouri River trading forts through the Indian Wars, the Pick-Sloan dams, the American Indian Movement, and the campaign for Indigenous rights at the United Nations. In 2016, a small protest encampment at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota, initially established to block construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline, grew to be the largest Indigenous protest movement in the twenty-first century, attracting tens of thousands of Indigenous and non-Native allies from around the world. Its slogan “Mni Wiconi”—Water Is Life—was about more than just a pipeline. Water Protectors knew this battle for Native sovereignty had already been fought many times before, and that, even with the encampment gone, their anti-colonial struggle would continue. While a historian by trade, Estes draws on observations from the encampments and from growing up as a citizen of the Oceti Sakowin (the Nation of the Seven Council Fires) and his own family’s rich history of struggle.
