Book The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata

Download or read book The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata written by Gina Apostol and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing glimpses of the Philippine Revolution and the Filipino writer Jose Rizal emerge despite the worst efforts of feuding academics in Apostol’s hilariously erudite novel, which won the Philippine National Book Award. Gina Apostol’s riotous second novel takes the form of a memoir by one Raymundo Mata, a half-blind bookworm and revolutionary, tracing his childhood, his education in Manila, his love affairs, and his discovery of writer and fellow revolutionary, Jose Rizal. Mata’s 19th-century story is complicated by present-day foreword(s), afterword(s), and footnotes from three fiercely quarrelsome and comic voices: a nationalist editor, a neo-Freudian psychoanalyst critic, and a translator, Mimi C. Magsalin. In telling the contested and fragmentary story of Mata, Apostol finds new ways to depict the violence of the Spanish colonial era, and to reimagine the nation’s great writer, Jose Rizal, who was executed by the Spanish for his revolutionary activities, and is considered by many to be the father of Philippine independence. The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata offers an intoxicating blend of fact and fiction, uncovering lost histories while building dazzling, anarchic modes of narrative.

Book Semblance and Signification

Download or read book Semblance and Signification written by Pascal Michelucci and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles assembled in Semblance and Signification explore linguistic and literary structures from a range of theoretical perspectives with a view to understanding the extent, prevalence, productivity, and limitations of iconically grounded forms of semiosis. With the complementary examination of large theoretical issues, extensive corpus analysis in several modern languages such as Italian, Japanese Sign Language, and English, and applied close studies across a range of artistic media, this volume brings a fresh understanding of the cognitive underpinnings of iconicity. If primary and secondary modelling systems are rarely studied in tandem, it is clear from this volume that their fruitful juxtaposition yields striking insight into the cognitive concerns that pervade current semiotic research.

Book excerpt: Losing her mother at nine, moving to Alaska at thirteen, and leaving the country at fifteen, City of Flowers narrates the early life of author Diane E. Greentree. It tells the story of a teenage girl who was spiraling downward but ultimately reignited a sense of wonder and changed the course of her life. In this memoir, Greentree shares how she received too much attention following her moms death and decided to never stand out again, a goal that brought devastating consequences later on. In a new town in southeast Alaska, feeling pressured toward drinking and sex, she sought an excuse to avoid doing something she would regret. For her, it was a letter from her mother. The desire to fit in proved too strong, however, and she crossed into an unhealthy abyss. Hearing about an exchange program, she jumped at the chance for escape, and with surprising determination, competed, and was selected to go. Thus began an adventure to the southern Philippines. Immersed in a new culture, food, ways of thinking and with no hope of fitting in, she grew to understand that she didnt need the approval of others to be herself. City of Flowers shares one teenagers story of coming of age and overcoming early challenges to learn to believe in herself.

Book Roots of Creole Structures

Download or read book Roots of Creole Structures written by Susanne Michaelis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects an ongoing shift in the study of contact languages: After a period of history-free universalism, it directs the attention to the individual historical circumstances under which the pidgin and creole languages arose. The contributions deal with different areas of language structure including phonology, morphology, and syntax, providing a wealth of structural and sociohistorical data that any comprehensive theory of contact languages will have to account for. Each of the papers provides a thorough description of a structural phenomenon against the background of the sociohistorical contact situation. The languages covered in the book are: Guiné-Bissau Creole, Haitian Creole, Hawai'i Creole, Indo-Portuguese creoles, Jamaican Creole, Lingua Franca, North American French, Mauritian Creole, Santomense, Saramaccan, Seychelles Creole, Sranan, Surinamese Maroon creoles, Vincentian Creole, and Zamboangueño Chavacano.

Book Sociocultural Dimensions of Language Change

Download or read book Sociocultural Dimensions of Language Change written by Ben G. Blount and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociocultural Dimensions of Language Change focuses on the influence of sociocultural terms on the forms of languages. The selection first underscores the sociocultural dimensions of language change and language evolution and speech style. Discussions focus on the relation of speech style and language evolution, linguistic evidence of language evolution, autonomy of code and style, language contact phenomena, and extension of the concept of language. The book then takes a look at speech and social prestige in the Belizian speech community; Japanese numeral classifiers; and speculations on the growth of ethnobotanical nomenclature. Topics include appearance of varietal names, differentiation and formation of specific names, six universal categories of ethnobotanical nomenclature, salience of speech, and prestige, social success, and language. The publication elaborates on color categorization in West Futunese; creolization and syntactic change in New Guinea Tok Pisin; relexification processes in Philippine Creole Spanish; and the historical and sociocultural aspects of the distribution of linguistic variants in highland Chiapas, Mexico. The selection is a valuable source of data for language experts and researchers interested in the sociocultural dimensions of language change.

Book Social and structural aspects of language contact and change

Download or read book Social and structural aspects of language contact and change written by Bettina Migge and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together papers that discuss social and structural aspects of language contact and language change. Several papers look at the relevance of historical documents to determine the linguistic nature of early contact varieties, while others investigate the specific processes of contact-induced change that were involved in the emergence and development of these languages. A third set of papers look at how new datasets and greater sensitivity to social issues can help to (re)assess persistent theoretical and empirical questions as well as help to open up new avenues of research. In particular they highlight the heterogeneity of contemporary language practices and attitudes often obscured in sociolinguistic research. The contributions all focus on language variation and change but investigate it from a variety of disciplinary and empirical perspectives and cover a range of linguistic contexts.

Book Pidginization and Creolization

Download or read book Pidginization and Creolization written by Kees Versteegh and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the notions of “pidginization” and “creolization” and the role of these processes of language learning in the history of the Arabic language. It is argued that when a new type of Arabic emerged after the Islamic conquests in the 7th century AD, the language went through these processes, as can be concluded from the sociolinguistic context of the period. The radical changes in the language that led to the development of the modern dialects are then seen as the result of pidginization and creolization. Data from the dialects are compared with phenomena in pidginized/creolized languages, and suggestions are given for the application of this framework to the history of other languages.
