Book Developments in Statistics

Download or read book Developments in Statistics written by Paruchuri R. Krishnaiah and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development in Statistics, Volume 2 is a collection of papers that deals with one- and two- dimensional structures, the statistical theory of linear systems, bispectra, and energy transfer in grid-generated turbulence. Several papers discuss simultaneous test procedures, stochastic Markovian fields, as well as the stopping of invariant sequential probability ratio tests. One paper examines the relationships between excitation and response statistics for one-dimensional structures, and then as extended to two-dimensional structures. The special features issuing from these extensions are related to simple supported rectangular and square plates excited by a stationary random force applied at a single point. Another paper discuses the relationship between the measurable bispectra and the one-dimensional energy transfer terms, and which bispectra will vanish in an isotropic turbulent flow field. One paper reviews simultaneous test procedures, including the evaluation of the probability integrals of multivariates, multivariate gamma distributions, distributions of correlated quadratic forms. Another paper analyzes two concerns regarding the random sample size N, also known as stopping time. These are if N is finite with a probability of one, or the rate that the tail probabilities in the distribution of N go to zero. Mathematicians, statisticians, students, and professors of calculus or advanced mathematics will surely appreciate the collection.

Book Network Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ulrik Brandes
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2005-02-09
  • ISBN : 3540249796
  • Pages : 481 pages

Download or read book Network Analysis written by Ulrik Brandes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-09 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Network’ is a heavily overloaded term, so that ‘network analysis’ means different things to different people. Specific forms of network analysis are used in the study of diverse structures such as the Internet, interlocking directorates, transportation systems, epidemic spreading, metabolic pathways, the Web graph, electrical circuits, project plans, and so on. There is, however, a broad methodological foundation which is quickly becoming a prerequisite for researchers and practitioners working with network models. From a computer science perspective, network analysis is applied graph theory. Unlike standard graph theory books, the content of this book is organized according to methods for specific levels of analysis (element, group, network) rather than abstract concepts like paths, matchings, or spanning subgraphs. Its topics therefore range from vertex centrality to graph clustering and the evolution of scale-free networks. In 15 coherent chapters, this monograph-like tutorial book introduces and surveys the concepts and methods that drive network analysis, and is thus the first book to do so from a methodological perspective independent of specific application areas.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at IPCO VIII, the Eighth Conference on Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization, Utrecht, The Netherlands, 2001. This meeting isa forum for researchers and practitioners working on various aspects of integer programming and combi- torial optimization. The aim is to present recent developments in theory, com- tation, and application of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. Topics include, but are not limited to: approximation algorithms, branch and bound algorithms, computational biology, computational complexity, compu- tional geometry, cutting plane algorithms, diophantine equations, geometry of numbers, graph and network algorithms, integer programming, matroids and submodular functions, on-line algorithms, polyhedral combinatorics, scheduling theory and algorithms, and semide nit e programs. IPCO was established in 1988 when the rs t IPCO program committee was formed. The locations and years of the seven rs t IPCO conferences were: IPCO I, Waterloo (Canada) 1990, IPCO II, Pittsburgh (USA) 1992, IPCO III, - ice (Italy) 1993, IPCO IV, Copenhagen (Denmark) 1995, IPCO V, Vancouver (Canada) 1996, IPCO VI, Houston (USA) 1998, IPCO VII, Graz (Austria) 1999. IPCO is held every year in which no MPS (Mathematical Programming Society) International Symposium takes place. Since the MPS meeting is triennial, IPCO conferences are held twice in every three-year period. Asa rule, IPCO is held somewhere in Northern America in even years, and somewhere in Europe in odd years.

Book Phylogenetic Networks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel H. Huson
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2010-12-02
  • ISBN : 113949287X
  • Pages : 375 pages

Download or read book Phylogenetic Networks written by Daniel H. Huson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolutionary history of species is traditionally represented using a rooted phylogenetic tree. However, when reticulate events such as hybridization, horizontal gene transfer or recombination are believed to be involved, phylogenetic networks that can accommodate non-treelike evolution have an important role to play. This book provides the first interdisciplinary overview of phylogenetic networks. Beginning with a concise introduction to both phylogenetic trees and phylogenetic networks, the fundamental concepts and results are then presented for both rooted and unrooted phylogenetic networks. Current approaches and algorithms available for computing phylogenetic networks from different types of datasets are then discussed, accompanied by examples of their application to real biological datasets. The book also summarises the algorithms used for drawing phylogenetic networks, along with the existing software for their computation and evaluation. All datasets, examples and other additional information and links are available from the book's companion website at www.phylogenetic-networks.org.

Book Combinatorial Set Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lorenz J. Halbeisen
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-11-24
  • ISBN : 1447121732
  • Pages : 449 pages

Download or read book Combinatorial Set Theory written by Lorenz J. Halbeisen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a self-contained introduction to modern set theory and also opens up some more advanced areas of current research in this field. The first part offers an overview of classical set theory wherein the focus lies on the axiom of choice and Ramsey theory. In the second part, the sophisticated technique of forcing, originally developed by Paul Cohen, is explained in great detail. With this technique, one can show that certain statements, like the continuum hypothesis, are neither provable nor disprovable from the axioms of set theory. In the last part, some topics of classical set theory are revisited and further developed in the light of forcing. The notes at the end of each chapter put the results in a historical context, and the numerous related results and the extensive list of references lead the reader to the frontier of research. This book will appeal to all mathematicians interested in the foundations of mathematics, but will be of particular use to graduates in this field.
