Book In the Tradition of Thurston

Download or read book In the Tradition of Thurston written by Ken’ichi Ohshika and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of 16 surveys on Thurston's work and its later development. The authors are mathematicians who were strongly influenced by Thurston's publications and ideas. The subjects discussed include, among others, knot theory, the topology of 3-manifolds, circle packings, complex projective structures, hyperbolic geometry, Kleinian groups, foliations, mapping class groups, Teichmüller theory, anti-de Sitter geometry, and co-Minkowski geometry. The book is addressed to researchers and students who want to learn about Thurston’s wide-ranging mathematical ideas and their impact. At the same time, it is a tribute to Thurston, one of the greatest geometers of all time, whose work extended over many fields in mathematics and who had a unique way of perceiving forms and patterns, and of communicating and writing mathematics.

Book Bridge to Abstract Mathematics

Download or read book Bridge to Abstract Mathematics written by Ralph W. Oberste-Vorth and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bridge to Abstract Mathematics will prepare the mathematical novice to explore the universe of abstract mathematics. Mathematics is a science that concerns theorems that must be proved within the constraints of a logical system of axioms and definitions rather than theories that must be tested, revised, and retested. Readers will learn how to read mathematics beyond popular computational calculus courses. Moreover, readers will learn how to construct their own proofs. The book is intended as the primary text for an introductory course in proving theorems, as well as for self-study or as a reference. Throughout the text, some pieces (usually proofs) are left as exercises. Part V gives hints to help students find good approaches to the exercises. Part I introduces the language of mathematics and the methods of proof. The mathematical content of Parts II through IV were chosen so as not to seriously overlap the standard mathematics major. In Part II, students study sets, functions, equivalence and order relations, and cardinality. Part III concerns algebra. The goal is to prove that the real numbers form the unique, up to isomorphism, ordered field with the least upper bound. In the process, we construct the real numbers starting with the natural numbers. Students will be prepared for an abstract linear algebra or modern algebra course. Part IV studies analysis. Continuity and differentiation are considered in the context of time scales (nonempty, closed subsets of the real numbers). Students will be prepared for advanced calculus and general topology courses. There is a lot of room for instructors to skip and choose topics from among those that are presented.

The remaining six essays extoll the virtues of six men whom Emerson deemed great: Plato, Emanuel Swedenborg, Michel de Montaigne, William Shakespeare, Napoleon, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Nature contains the essence of Emerson's transcendental philosophy in which the world of phenomena is seen as symbolic of the inner life, and individual freedom and self-reliance are emphasized. Emerson's addresses apply his doctrine to scholars, clergymen, and others.

The poetry, which stands alone as engaging literature, is combined with scriptures to guide the reader in further bible study and journal pages to write down prayers and the reader's own reflections. Challenging and inspiring poetry encourages readers to build a more committed, faithful and genuine personal relationship with God and raises the bar on the standard to love others. _____________________________________ Awesome Awesome sounds fresher than amazing, But both describe just how you are. Given my tendency to fall into sin, How does your holiness offer forgiveness again? It's your love, so compassionate, complete and true. Jesus brought grace and paid justice as a gift to the living. Kindness in action, well beyond what man would do. Love from God is so enduring, merciful and forgiving... _______________________________________

Book Real Analysis and Probability

Download or read book Real Analysis and Probability written by R. M. Dudley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the best-known probabilists in the world this text offers a clear and modern presentation of modern probability theory and an exposition of the interplay between the properties of metric spaces and those of probability measures. This text is the first at this level to include discussions of the subadditive ergodic theorems, metrics for convergence in laws and the Borel isomorphism theory. The proofs for the theorems are consistently brief and clear and each chapter concludes with a set of historical notes and references. This book should be of interest to students taking degree courses in real analysis and/or probability theory.
