Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Newbery Honor–winning author of Genesis Begins Again comes a shimmering picture book that shines the light on Zora Neale Hurston, the extraordinary writer and storycatcher extraordinaire who changed the face of American literature. Zora was a girl who hankered for tales like bees for honey. Now, her mama always told her that if she wanted something, “to jump at de sun”, because even though you might not land quite that high, at least you’d get off the ground. So Zora jumped from place to place, from the porch of the general store where she listened to folktales, to Howard University, to Harlem. And everywhere she jumped, she shined sunlight on the tales most people hadn’t been bothered to listen to until Zora. The tales no one had written down until Zora. Tales on a whole culture of literature overlooked…until Zora. Until Zora jumped.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1961, Let's Read is a simple and systematic way to teach basic reading. Developed by noted linguist Leonard Bloomfield, the book is based on the alphabetic spelling patterns of English. Bloomfield offered an antidote to the idea that English is a difficult language to learn to read by teaching the learner to decode the phonemic sound-letter correlations of the language in a sequential, logical progression of lessons based on its spelling patterns. The learner is first introduced to the most consistent (alphabetic) vocabulary and then to increasingly less alphabetic and less frequent spelling patterns within a vocabulary of about 5,000 words. The second edition of Let's Read brings Bloomfield's innovative program into the twenty-first century without changing the sequence of exercises but with revised text and an attractive new design and layout.

Book excerpt: The pages that follow encapsulate the essence of the pathfinding message delivered by brother Theodore Andoseh at the International Students' Bible Camp in September 2020, held in Koumé, Cameroon. In the grand tapestry of faith, the Church stands as a beacon, entrusted with embracing her Lord's Great Commission. In humble prayer, she beseeches the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into His abundant fields. And as her petitions rise, God, in His divine providence, calls and equips individuals to embark on His sacred mission. This book endeavours to construct a framework for understanding missions, intended to guide the Church and its missionaries in their noble work. It serves as an introductory exploration into the mission of Paul and Barnabas, with Paul serving as the primary paradigm for missions in the New Covenant. Through a careful examination of the Scriptures and the author's personal experiences, this book illuminates various facets of missionary work, offering valuable insights into the following themes: Missionary calling Missionary send-forth Missionary team Missionary strategy Missionary work Missionary message Missionary power Missionary conflict Missionary fruit Missionary realignment The author passionately believes that a profound understanding of the Lord's missionary economy can alleviate the burdens of oversight and unleash the full potential of God's missionary purpose. It is our heartfelt prayer that this book, in the hands of those who genuinely care about God's missionary vision, becomes a vessel through which divine blessings flow. May the Lord condescend to use it as an instrument of inspiration and enlightenment, touching the lives of many as they embark on their own transformative journeys of faith.

Book Yannai on Genesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laura S. Lieber
  • Publisher : Hebrew Union College Press
  • Release : 2010-09-15
  • ISBN : 0878201041
  • Pages : 817 pages

Download or read book Yannai on Genesis written by Laura S. Lieber and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piyyut is the art of Hebrew or Aramaic poetry composed either in place of or as adornments to Jewish statutory prayers. Laura S. Lieber uses the piyyutim of a single poet, Yannai (ca. sixth century C.E.), to introduce readers to this important but largely unfamiliar body of writings. Yannai, the first Hebrew poet to sign his name to his works (by means of an acrostic), influenced Hebrew sacred poetry for centuries beyond his lifespan. He was the first to consistently use true end rhyme, and he was among the first to have written for the weekly service and festivals rather than just particular holidays. As literary works, his poems are as dazzling as they are complex, rich with sound and play, allusion and linguistic beauty. Lieber presents the Hebrew texts of Yannai's 31 extant piyyutim which embellish the Book of Genesis. She translates, annotates, and analyzes these complex poems, which display the poet's transformative treatments of some of the most familiar biblical narratives. She contextualizes these poems and teaches readers how to read and appreciate piyyut by studying Yannai's poetic language and the formal structures of the poems; his exegetical, cultural, and societal importance; and intriguing motifs in Yannai's worldview such as mysticism, holiness, Jewish-Christian relations, and the role of women. Lieber's groundbreaking study is an invitation to those with interests in areas such as liturgical studies, rabbinic literature and targum studies, the early synagogue and its art, Byzantine Christian culture and society, and the history of biblical interpretation to engage with these beautiful and neglected texts and include them in larger intellectual conversations.
