Book Let s Go for a Ride

Download or read book Let s Go for a Ride written by William Livezey and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let’s Go for a Ride is the story of William (Bill) Livezey’s thirty-year career in the Maine Warden Service. Heralded as “one of the best covert investigators in the country” by Maine Warden Service Lieutenant Dan Scott, Bill is the agency’s longest-tenured undercover operative, having spent twenty years in the Special Investigations Unit. “Let’s go for a ride” is the universal bad-guy code for breaking the law. Among Maine’s most sinister wildlife offenders, its utterance is prone to incite alcohol-fueled night hunting, high-speed car chases on winding country roads, drug dealing, arson, and attempted murder. The worst of the worst were Bill Livezey’s bread and butter. His success at putting the truly bad guys out of business was driven by his upbringing as one of them. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Bill's father was a successful businessman whose blind ambition sent him down the dark path of drug trafficking. It wasn’t long before young Bill was tagging along and doing drugs with his dad. The aftermath of witnessing his father perish in a fiery standoff with police sent Bill spiraling out of control. He lashed out at law enforcement by dealing drugs, and he numbed the pain and confusion by doing them. Deep down, Bill knew his life was broken. When a high school football teammate invited him to attend a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, he discovered his faith and a new path.

Book The Chronicles of a Stink Chicken

Download or read book The Chronicles of a Stink Chicken written by Kevin Munro and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Stink” in Australian slang means a “fight” or something or someone that is not welcome. The Chronicles of a Stink Chicken: Episodes Second Edition features eight short stories and poetry describing the madness and wildness of thoughts and actions resultant from use of illicit drugs. It challenges unsuspecting readers with insets of respected philosophic pretext that asks real questions regarding health authority involvement with ranges of customers in the community, as social changes recreate the society they are created from. It is disarmingly presented within the same context of wild humours and contains spun encounters with insanity. The stories are about some of the author’s school friends who are mainly deceased due to substance abuse. The book also includes health and legal issues, financial truths, and the social negativities that come with using drugs. Humour is used to show how easily a user’s mind may be led into absurd beliefs. Author Kevin Munro says his short stories cover a wide period of his life that are re-weaved and spun. “Therefore, the Stink Chicken is probably myself, however in a somewhat creative and remodeled world. You would be surprised how many elements and events in these absurd stories verging upon the surreal are actually true.”

Download or read book Deer Wars written by Bob Frye and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of deer management in Pennsylvania is as complex as it is controversial. From the disappearance of deer in Pennsylvania forests at the beginning of the twentieth century to the population explosion that occurred in the latter half of the century, the balance between herd size and a healthy forest has long been a difficult one. In Deer Wars, Bob Frye examines this controversy and the effect that herd management has had on all of the citizens of Pennsylvania; farmers managing deer invasions and property rights, hunters dealing with changing herd densities and ever-complex restrictions, state agencies juggling the rights of hunters with the needs of commercial interests, all with stakes in the success and health of the deer herd. Now with deer harvests decreasing, Chronic Wasting Disease becoming a potential threat, and forests showing serious signs of trouble, the need for compromise from all of the players is essential, but is it possible? This well-researched and engrossing book explores that question.

Book My Mother s Sabbath Days

Download or read book My Mother s Sabbath Days written by Chaim Grade and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tender and moving memoir by the great Yiddish writer Chaim Grade takes us to the very source of his widely praised novels and poems--the city of Vilna, the "Jerusalem of Lithuania," during the years before World War II. Centered on the figure of Grade's mother, Vella--simple, pious, hard-working--this is a richly detailed account of the ghetto of his youth, of the lives of the rabbis, the wives, the tradesmen, the peddlers, and the scholars. We see Vella, desperate after losing her husband, become a fruit-peddler, struggling to survive poverty and to remain true to her faith in the face of human pettiness and cruelty. We follow Grade as he walks in the footsteps of his scholar father, a champion of enlightenment; we see him entering marriage, and his mother finding some peace of mind in a marriage of her own--all of this in a world recalled with extraordinary physical and emotional intensity. Then, World War II. The partition of Poland between the Soviet Union and Germany is followed by the new German invasion of June 1941. Grade--believing, as do so many others, that the Nazis pose a danger chiefly to able-bodied men like himself--flees into Russia. In his travels on foot and by train he meets a fascinating, kaleidoscopic array of characters: the disillusioned Communist Lev Kogan; the durachok, or simpleton, a young prisoner who, mistaken for a German spy, is shot when he jumps from a train; the once-prosperous lawyer, Orenstein, who virtually becomes a beggar, dies and is buried by strangers in a remote Central Asian village. With the war's end, Grade returns to Vilna--to find the ghetto in ruins, to learn that his wife and his mother have gone to their deaths--and he is left with nothing but memories. But it is here, amid the devastation of a people, that he finds the compulsion and the passion to commit to paper the world that has been lost.

Book I Ain t Studdin Ya

Download or read book I Ain t Studdin Ya written by Bobby Rush and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience music history with this memoir by one of the last of the genuine old school Blues and R&B legends, the Grammy-winning dynamic showman Bobby Rush. This memoir charts the extraordinary rise to fame of living blues legend, Bobby Rush. Born Emmett Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. As a teenager, Rush acquired his first real guitar and started playing in juke joints in Little Rock, Arkansas, donning a fake mustache to trick club owners into thinking he was old enough to gain entry. He led his first band in Arkansas between Little Rock and Pine Bluff in the 1950s. It was there he first had Elmore James play in his band. Rush later relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s, crafting his own distinct style of funky blues, and recording a succession of singles for various labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album which went on to be listed in the Top 10 blues albums of the 1970s by Rolling Stone and a handful of regional jukebox favorites including "Sue" and "I Ain't Studdin' Ya." And Rush's career shows no signs of slowing down now. The man once beloved for performing in local jukejoints is now headlining major music/blues festivals, clubs, and theaters across the U.S. and as far as Japan and Australia. At age eighty-six, he is still on the road for over 200 days a year. His lifelong hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title "King of the Chitlin' Circuit," from Rolling Stone. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and his ribald sense of humor. He was featured in Martin Scorcese's The Blues docuseries on PBS, a documentary film called Take Me to the River, performed with Dan Aykroyd on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and most recently had a cameo in the Golden Globe nominated Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy. He was recently given the highest Blues Music Award honor of B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. His songs have also been featured in TV shows and films including HBO's Ballers and major motion pictures like Black Snake Moan, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Considered by many to be the greatest bluesman currently performing, this book will give readers unparalleled access into the man, the myth, the legend: Bobby Rush.
