  • Author : Rick Blumenberg
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-10-03
  • ISBN : 1499075995
  • Pages : 102 pages

Download or read book Let S Get Down to Basics written by Rick Blumenberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lets Get Down to Basics was originally written as curriculum for a class for new Christians or people who were new to the church and to the particular viewpoint of Wesleyan-Arminiam theology. It has thirteen chapters and each chapter has review questions at the end with the answers at the end of the book, making it excellent for a class, for a personal review or for someone who wants to investigate the basics of Christianity on their own. The book does not criticize any other religions or branches of Christianity, but is an attempt to lift up basics of the faith that are common to all Christians. There are some chapters that are particular to the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) or to the Wesleyan-Arminian believers, but it is not written in a way that criticizes those who believe differently and might be helpful to those of other traditions so they understand beliefs from this point of view. Chapters that fall into this category include Chapter 7 The Second Step (the doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace) and Chapter 9 Develop a Lifestyle of Holiness (aiming for the goal of a holy lifestyle. Chapter 11 Signs of the Times in the Christian Life (explains ordinances of the church, including baptism and communion, two almost universal teachings of Christianity, and footwashing, which is practiced by only a few church groups. Chapter 13 The Last Chapter deals with the end times from an amillenial eschatological perspective. Even if this is not your theological view, it might be helpful for you to understand end times teaching as viewed from the amillenial perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a scarring teenage experience, Bethany Cary has erected walls around her heart. Doctor Luke Willoughs has done the same since his wife's death. Together, they can make the walls come tumbling down, but at what cost? Bethany is content with her life as a preschool teacher. She is certain she'll never marry, definitely never fall in love. Then she feels a call to work in Africa. She doesn't know when or how, but she begins preparations. As the school year progresses, she becomes close to four-year-old Jenny, who lost her mother at birth. Soon Bethany is babysitting Jenny, and she strikes up a friendship with Jenny's strikingly handsome father, a surgeon. Luke has been preparing to return to Africa to continue his mission work as a doctor, but he will not go without Jenny. Recognizing that Jenny needs a mother and that Bethany has become a good friend to him, he asks for Bethany's hand in marriage. With their hearts so firmly guarded, neither of them can contemplate ever falling in love, so it seems an ideal solution. When they arrive in Africa, Luke is forced to face haunting memories of the woman he still loves, and Bethany's world is turned upside down. Their walls are soon higher and stronger than ever before, driving them apart. Does God have a plan to bring them together, unguarded, or have they made the biggest mistake of their lives? Vivian Jenkins's own missionary experiences in Zimbabwe are woven into the story throughout, creating a spellbinding, poignant read. Let the Walls Come Down.

Book Slave Songs of the United States

Download or read book Slave Songs of the United States written by William Francis Allen and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.

Book Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight

Download or read book Don t Let s Go to the Dogs Tonight written by Alexandra Fuller and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2003-03-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A worthy heir to Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham, Alexandra Fuller shares visceral memories of her childhood in Africa, and of her headstrong, unforgettable mother. “This is not a book you read just once, but a tale of terrible beauty to get lost in over and over.”—Newsweek “By turns mischievous and openhearted, earthy and soaring . . . hair-raising, horrific, and thrilling.”—The New Yorker Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time. From 1972 to 1990, Alexandra Fuller—known to friends and family as Bobo—grew up on several farms in southern and central Africa. Her father joined up on the side of the white government in the Rhodesian civil war, and was often away fighting against the powerful black guerilla factions. Her mother, in turn, flung herself at their African life and its rugged farm work with the same passion and maniacal energy she brought to everything else. Though she loved her children, she was no hand-holder and had little tolerance for neediness. She nurtured her daughters in other ways: She taught them, by example, to be resilient and self-sufficient, to have strong wills and strong opinions, and to embrace life wholeheartedly, despite and because of difficult circumstances. And she instilled in Bobo, particularly, a love of reading and of storytelling that proved to be her salvation. Alexandra Fuller writes poignantly about a girl becoming a woman and a writer against a backdrop of unrest, not just in her country but in her home. But Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight is more than a survivor’s story. It is the story of one woman’s unbreakable bond with a continent and the people who inhabit it, a portrait lovingly realized and deeply felt. Praise for Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight “Riveting . . . [full of] humor and compassion.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “The incredible story of an incredible childhood.”—The Providence Journal
