Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lets Get Down to Basics was originally written as curriculum for a class for new Christians or people who were new to the church and to the particular viewpoint of Wesleyan-Arminiam theology. It has thirteen chapters and each chapter has review questions at the end with the answers at the end of the book, making it excellent for a class, for a personal review or for someone who wants to investigate the basics of Christianity on their own. The book does not criticize any other religions or branches of Christianity, but is an attempt to lift up basics of the faith that are common to all Christians. There are some chapters that are particular to the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) or to the Wesleyan-Arminian believers, but it is not written in a way that criticizes those who believe differently and might be helpful to those of other traditions so they understand beliefs from this point of view. Chapters that fall into this category include Chapter 7 The Second Step (the doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace) and Chapter 9 Develop a Lifestyle of Holiness (aiming for the goal of a holy lifestyle. Chapter 11 Signs of the Times in the Christian Life (explains ordinances of the church, including baptism and communion, two almost universal teachings of Christianity, and footwashing, which is practiced by only a few church groups. Chapter 13 The Last Chapter deals with the end times from an amillenial eschatological perspective. Even if this is not your theological view, it might be helpful for you to understand end times teaching as viewed from the amillenial perspective.

The very funny, highly irreverent, and yet sensible John Blessington has planted that seed in Let My Children Work!. His revolution involved throwing out the whole ridiculous concept of homework, of tying home and school life together, or recommending (yes, heartily endorsing!) T.V. as a learning tool, and of recognizing the home as the richest learning center available. This is a revolution that goes to the roots of the way all of us live. In Let My Children Work! Jack Blessington points the way to a saner and more complete way of educating our children.

Book Understanding Caricature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Greg Houston
  • Publisher : The Monacelli Press, LLC
  • Release : 2021-04-27
  • ISBN : 1580935648
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Understanding Caricature written by Greg Houston and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A truly comprehensive and laser-focused examination of a really wonderful, expressive art form. Understanding Caricature offers artists, aspiring artists, students, journalists, bloggers, etc. a lively guide to an old and respected art form. A great caricature is one that not only captures the subject's look and personality but amplifies them significantly. They are almost always funny and very often (but not always) mean spirited. Eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hairline, cheeks, eyebrows, teeth, chin: There’s no facial feature (or any other body part, for that matter) that can escape the sardonic scrutiny of caricaturist and illustrator Greg Houston. But though he cleverly twists, exaggerates, and distorts each subject’s image, he always makes sure the person remains recognizable—an absolute must for successful caricature. Whether on assignment or simply drawing for his own perverse pleasure, Houston loves skewering the high and mighty—movie stars, moguls, politicians, and assorted other VIPs—especially when they misbehave. Caricature, says Houston, is a very sharp weapon for the powerless to use against the powerful, and he can teach you to wield it, too. After defining caricature, differentiating it from other forms of portraiture, and delving into its centuries-long history, Houston gets down to the nitty gritty of how to do it. He focuses sequentially on the face, the hair, the body, and what he calls “accoutrements”—distinctive items of clothing that help viewers immediately identify celebrities. You yourself will learn to poke artistic fun at the famous through a series of demonstrations that let you follow Houston as he constructs caricatures of Jake Gyllenhaal, Masie Williams, Dwayne Johnson, Rainn Wilson, and other notable victims of his wicked pen. But Houston doesn’t focus solely on his own approach. A whole chapter of Understanding Caricature is devoted to other contemporary caricaturists and the signature mediums they work in, ranging from traditional oils and watercolors, to digital drawing and painting, to sculpture and even puppet-making. And the book’s final chapter displays the work of students who’ve studied with Houston at his Baltimore academy. Brilliant in their own right, these pieces also demonstrate how any artist, with Houston’s guidance, can become a skilled practitioner of the caricaturist’s art.

Book The Portion Teller Plan

Download or read book The Portion Teller Plan written by Lisa R. Young, Ph.D. and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portion Teller Plan is a sensible eating guide and the end of diet deprivation. No forbidden foods, no calorie counting. Welcome to diet liberation. Would you ever consider going to the kitchen in the morning and grabbing five slices of bread for breakfast? No? Just one bagel is more like it, right? Well, your morning bagel is equivalent to eating five slices of bread. Your steak at dinner is equal to the protein in eighteen eggs. And that huge bowl of pasta you had at lunch is anybody’s guess. Nobody likes to cut back but the cold hard facts are in: Portion sizes have steadily increased over the past thirty years and our collective waistlines are ballooning right along with them. You may need to eat a little less if you want to lose weight, but with The Portion Teller Plan you can eat all of your favorite foods. Nutrition and portion size expert Dr. Lisa Young presents an individualized guide to eating according to your portion personality and food preferences. You’ll learn a simple system of visuals–a deck of cards, a baseball, your own hand–to help gauge portion size. You’ll be able to eat out, eat in, cheat, and eat on the road without ever being a portion victim again.
