Book Myal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erna Brodber
  • Publisher : Waveland Press
  • Release : 2014-08-08
  • ISBN : 1478626828
  • Pages : 119 pages

Download or read book Myal written by Erna Brodber and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaican-born novelist and sociologist Erna Brodber describes Myal as “an exploration of the links between the way of life forged by the people of two points of the black diaspora—the Afro-Americans and the Afro-Jamaicans.” Operating on many literary levels—thematically, linguistically, stylistically—it is the story of women’s cultural and spiritual struggle in colonial Jamaica. The novel opens at the beginning of the 20th century with a community gathering to heal the mysterious illness of a young woman, Ella, who has returned to Jamaica after an unsuccessful marriage abroad. The Afro-Jamaican religion myal, which asserts that good has the power to conquer all, is invoked to heal Ella, who has been left "zombified” and devoid of any black soul. Ella, who is light skinned enough to pass for white, has suffered a breakdown after her white American husband produced a black-face minstrel show based on the stories of her village and childhood. This cultural appropriation is one of a series Ella encountered in her life, and parallels the ongoing theft of the labor and culture of colonized peoples for imperial gain and pleasure. The novel‘s rich, vivid language and vital characters earned it the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Canada and the Caribbean. The novel links nicely with Brodber’s coming-of-age story, Jane & Louisa Will Soon Come Home, also from Waveland Press, for its similar images, themes, and specific Jamaican cultural references to colonialism, religion, slavery, gender, and identity. Both novels are Brodber’s way of telling stories outside of published history to point out the whitewashing and distortion of black history through religion and colonialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Logos 7, Vol. 1 is the eighth of my ten-volume, Logos 1-7 work, each volume of which is able to stand alone as God’s Book of Life. It took me over 3,000 pages in ten volumes to say How and What is Important to Believe. It seeks to explain by experience who Jesus is, who God is, who the Holy Spirit is, what the Bible is, why it is crucial to life that we believe in them, what “belief” is, what “to be saved” is, just how Salvation is effected, what the “take-away” benefits are, and how to find meaning and purpose in life. This volume focuses on what exactly is the Will of God for each individual and well as corporately for Humankind. It holds God's Warning Messageto the World addressed to every level of society from highest to lowest: world, nation, state, community, family, and individual – that the state of humankind is deplorable to God, and offers the Call of God to believe in Jesus as the Christ Savior and accept his Holy Spirit for Life with Him. He assays it through his Eyes of Christ, warns of coming retribution, and presents the Christ Spirit as the only solution to restore humankind to a godly image. “Each of these ten volumes is able to stand alone as God’s Book of Life, portraying Life with the Holy Spirit by belief in the Christ of Jesus as Savior to eternal life with God. The ten volumes relate my Story of Writing God's Book of Life, using nonfiction essays and poetry with daily help of divine intervention in producing the seven-Logos Work of ten volumes, and the four supporting volumes, all seek to fully understand and explain this work inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Christ of Jesus. “The action of God fulfilled for him in seven years all of Rodger Crafton's dreams of becoming a writer of poetry and prose, an armchair philosopher, and an artist working in his new, upstairs garage atelier.”---R. Crafton Gibbs

Book Indigenous Educational Models for Contemporary Practice

Download or read book Indigenous Educational Models for Contemporary Practice written by Maenette K.P. A Benham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the philosophy that should drive native education policy and practice? In July 1997 a group of native educational leaders from the United States (including Alaska and Hawai'i), Canada, Australia, and New Zealand gathered to define a potential solution to this question. This book passes on the individual educational philosophies of the participants and captures the essence of each in a dynamic, transformational, and holistic model--"Go to the Source"--which forwards a collective vision for a native language- and culture-based educational philosophy that native educational leaders and teachers, policymakers, and curriculum developers can use to ground their work.
