Book Transnational Communication and Identity Construction in Diaspora

Download or read book Transnational Communication and Identity Construction in Diaspora written by Merga Yonas Bula and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was sparked by the absence of literature on transnational masspersonal communication (tmc) of ‘Eritrean’, ‘Ethiopian’, Oromo, and Somali diaspora communities. To bridge this theoretical gap, an empirical study was conducted at meso-level based on three questions: (a) what topics do people in the diaspora communities discuss in relation to their homelands via social media – an alternative for tmc; (b) how do they communicate about their homelands’ issues in relation to their collective identities; and (c) how does this communication enable the construction of their own identity as well as the deconstruction of competing identities. The theoretical analysis from the perspective of these questions led to developing own model, i.e., the Diasporic Identity Construction in Transnational Masspersonal Communication Model (DICTMCM). This model, which connects the theoretical analysis to the empirical study, argues that their communication in relation to their homelands, particularly about their collective identities, consists not only of what they talk but also of how they converse. As a result, the empirical results delivered a comparative analysis of the tmc of these four diaspora communities and how they construct their collective identities via this tmc, which bridged the above stated gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Troublous Times in Canada" is a historical account written by John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. Macdonald sheds light on a critical period in Canadian history that followed the conclusion of the American Civil War in 1865. Macdonald expresses his concern that Canadian authors and historians have largely overlooked the gravity of the events that transpired during this time. The author emphasizes that the Fenian troubles of 1866 and 1870 posed significant dangers to Canada, which, if not addressed promptly, could have led to the severance of Canada from British dominion. Macdonald draws on his personal experiences serving on the Niagara frontier during the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870. He aims to provide a faithful account of the events during these campaigns, relying not only on his memory but also on official records and reports from the Militia Department in Ottawa and the Ontario Bureau of Archives in Toronto. "Troublous Times in Canada" by John A. Macdonald serves as a historical record of the Fenian troubles in Canada, offering insights into the challenges faced by the young nation during a critical period in its history.

Emphasis is placed on the divergent views of such intellectual giants as Confucius and Laotse in ancient China; the classical Hindu philosophers from ancient times to Gandhi and Tagore; patriarchs and prophets quoted in Scripture; Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas in the Middle Ages; Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Hume, and Kant; and nineteenth- and twentieth-century luminaries such as Bentham, Mill, Peirce, James, Dewey, Sartre, and Wittgenstein. Book excerpt: As I turned the pages and began reading this odyssey of Barry Johnston, as a veteran and artist, my interest increased, and I was pleased that I had agreed to review it. 'As We Sow' is not a book of fiction, nor a novel but an autobiography of a modern renaissance man, but a man no-less, with all his foibles, his successes, failures, fears and frustrations laid out with surgical precision in the cold reality of life's twists and turns. Viet Nam leaves an open wound Barry struggles to understand. He is empathic to the wrongs inflected on the innocent whether from war or life itself. His nature is sculpting figurative art imbued with his concerns for humanity. He joins a religious art colony in the Swiss Alps known as L'Abri where Barry argues with the founder Francis Schaeffer over interpretation of scripture and wrestles with his own spirit over the contradictions. Never at peace, he's at odds with the commercial art establishment for commissions, and he reflects on failed marriages after a near heart attack he barely survives. Barry reveals himself with honesty and a humanity which make this a compelling biography and a historical account of a representational artist, veteran and inventor. - Daniel Shea

A range of experiments was performed on a group of soldiers, including genetic reconstruction which was made possible by a serum created by Dr. Emanuel Brown. Despite the advancements made, the project was deemed a failure and the soldiers were discharged, much to the chagrin of its leader, General James S. Lassiter. The general and Dr. Brown continued their experiments, administering the trial serum to each other. After years of experimentation, Dr. Brown and General Lassiter would eventually part ways, both thinking that their efforts of perfecting the serum were fruitless. It wouldn’t be until the birth of the general’s son that the effects of the serum would be realized. The power of the serum had been passed down genetically from the original test subjects to their offspring, giving them super human abilities. The general realized that all of the offspring of those to whom the serum was administered would have superior traits as well. Realizing the potential of these children, the general gathered a group of renegade soldiers, who shared his views of hatred toward the government, and formed an organization known as STING. He hunted down and killed the soldiers of the original project and abducted their children. He took them to a hidden compound so he could raise and train them to be his superior army. Dr. Brown foresaw the evil of the general’s ambitions. With the help of a small band of Ascended children he called the Omega Nexus, he organized an escape that would lead to the destruction of the STING compound and STING. Now, STING has reassembled for the sole purpose of recollecting the Ascended who are now extremely powerful adults scattered throughout the United States. Unbeknownst to STING, the Omega Nexus is waiting...
