Book Intentions in the Experience of Meaning

Download or read book Intentions in the Experience of Meaning written by Raymond W. Gibbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do our assumptions about authorship matter for our experience of meaning? This book examines the debates in the humanities and social sciences over whether authorial intentions can, or should, constrain our interpretation of language and art. Scholars assume that understanding of linguistic and artistic meaning should not be constrained by beliefs about authors and their possible intentions in creating a human artifact. It is argued here that people are strongly disposed to infer intentionality when understanding oral speech, written texts, artworks, and many other human actions. Although ordinary people, and scholars, may infer meanings that diverge from, or extend beyond, what authors intend, our experience of human artifacts as meaningful is fundamentally tied to our assumptions of intentionality. This challenges the traditional ideas of intentions as existing solely in the minds of individuals, and formulates a new conceptual framework for examining if and when intentions influence the interpretation of meaning.

Book Remote Learning and Distance Education

Download or read book Remote Learning and Distance Education written by William H. Pruden III and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-11-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote learning and distance education burst into the national consciousness with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic - yet it remains poorly understood in many ways. Explore a range of debates around this timely topic, including: can remote learning models of educational instruction produce the same (or better?) academic results than in-school learning? What are the socialization impacts of remote learning? What do education experts think is the next frontier in remote learning? This book explores those questions and many more. Remote Learning and Distance Education provides the historical background and context for understanding the origins and evolution of distance education - an evolution which was accelerated dramatically, and in unpredictable ways, when the COVID-19 pandemic transformed millions of actual classrooms into virtual ones. Readers will better understand the problems, controversies and solutions surrounding distance education, from access and equity issues to maintaining academic integrity. Profiles of key figures and organizations, such as Khan Academy, give readers an introduction to important players in this potentially revolutionary approach to teaching and learning.
