This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Pharmaceutical Latin and Prescription Writing and Interpretation This book is the product of several years' experience in the teaching of Pharmaceutical Latin, and is designed to present, in a simple and practical manner, such rudi ments of Latin as will enable the pharmacist to interpret correctly those portions of the language which he may encounter in the practice of his profession. It endeavors to teach these essentials in the limited time usually devoted to this subject, recognizing the fact that students come variously prepared in regard to both preliminary education and pharmaceutical training. Neither drug store experience nor previous knowledge of Latin on the part of the student is assumed, and careful explanation is made of such points as are likely to prove troublesome. Simplicity is obtained by spending but little time upon pronunciation; by omitting exceptions to general rules; by noting but four cases of the noun' and adjective, with stress upon the Genitive; by simplifying the third declension as much as seems advisable; and by reducing verb work to a minimum. The greater portion of the exercise work is on translation from Latin to English, and the exercises and sentences are carefully graded in difficulty and lead gradually into prescription work. Book excerpt: This useful work is designed to present in a simple and practical manner such rudiments of Latin as will enable the pharmacist to interpret correctly those portions of the language which he may encounter in the practice of his profession. Neither drug store experience nor previous knowledge of Latin is assumed and careful explanation is made of points that are likely to prove troublesome. We are pleased to note that special attention has been paid to the writing of titles, and to prescriptions. Detailed explanation of Metric prescriptions is given and the requirements of "Harrison Law" prescriptions are noted. Although the volume is designed primarily as a textbook for colleges of pharmacy, we feel safe in saying that it will prove of value to the student of medicine and also as a reference book for physicians and pharmacists. -Practical Druggist and Pharmaceutical Review of Reviews, Volume 34 [1916]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical and Pharmaceutical Latin: For Students of Pharmacy and Medicine, a Guide to the Grammatical Construction and Translation of Physicians' Prescriptions, Including Extensive Vocabularies and an Appendix Upon Foreign Prescriptions The tendency, both in this country and on the Continent, to abandon the use of the Latin language in the writing of prescriptions as well as of pharmacop ias, is as marked as it is regrettable. While the principal reason for the change is doubtless to be found in the saving of trouble to busy men, who are thus spared the necessity of becoming and remaining familiar with a language other than the vernacular, yet there is much to be said in favour of a universal language for pharmacop ias and physicians' prescriptions. In these days of rapid, easy, and almost universal travelling, foreign prescriptions are much more commonly seen in this country than was formerly the case. The danger that may ensue from the dispensing in different countries of medicinal preparations known by the same name, but of different strengths, has become so well recognised that in 1902 an International Conference was held in Brussels, to which the Governments of many countries sent delegates, and at which the desirability of uniformity in the strength of certain potent medicines was agreed to and formulae accepted. A further step in the direction of obviating inaccuracies in the dispensing of foreign prescriptions would be found in the writing of those prescriptions in a universal language, Latin, by which they would be readily intelligible to the pharmacists of all countries, just as systematic descriptions of plants are written in Latin and are universally intelligible to systematic botanists. Book The Latin Grammar Pharmacy and Medicine

Download or read book The Latin Grammar Pharmacy and Medicine written by David Hamilton Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Grammar Pharmacy and Medicine The present edition of the Latin Grammar of Pharmacy and Medicine retains the essential features of the three earlier ones. Some changes and some additions have been shown to be advisable by the experience of the classroom and by the suggestions of reviewers and teachers. Many exercises have been shortened or simplified, some have been omitted; all have been carefully reviewed and any forms or constructions for which the previous lessons have not prepared the student have been removed. All words lacking in the vocabulary have been supplied. The statements of some of the principles of syntax have been altered, the chapters on the subjunctive have received special attention. In accordance with the expressed wish of some pharmacists and physicians, the English method of the pronunciation of Latin has been explained. All long vowels are marked; the mark of short vowels has been omitted except in rare instances. Professor L. E. Sayre, whose name has been connected with this book from the first, has contributed a chapter on Prescription Writing and one on Chemical Terms, and a List of Pharmaceutical and Medical Terms with their Definitions. Many additional prescriptions have been distributed through the earlier lessons and several have been added before the Reading Lessons in the latter part of the book. For these, also, thanks are due to Professor Sayre. It is believed that these new features will increase the value and effectiveness of the book; and it is recommended that words from the list of pharmaceutical and medical terms be assigned early in the course as a part of each lesson until all are learned. Book Prescription Writing

Download or read book Prescription Writing written by Frederic Henry Gerrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prescription Writing: Designed for the Use of Medical Students Who Have Never Studied Latin I am aware that it may be objected to this plan that it gives the student little more than a parrot like command of a few words and expressions, and does not teach him the principles Of the language. But I respectfully submit that it is far better for a man to write a prescription correctly, even in the most automatic way, than to blunder through it dis gracefully, as so many habitually do, and thus expose himself to the ridicule of apothecaries' shop-boys. Besides, I cherish the not unreasonable hope that the aid in prescription writing derived from the little knowledge of Latin which this book may im part will so convince some students of the value of the language, that they will systematically undertake the mastery Of its elements, and acquire a consider able vocabulary. The time is not very far off, I trust, when no one will be allowed to matriculate in a medical school who has not a good reading knowl edge of easy Latin. Until then, it seems to me that such books as this is designed to be may perform an important service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
