This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This useful work is designed to present in a simple and practical manner such rudiments of Latin as will enable the pharmacist to interpret correctly those portions of the language which he may encounter in the practice of his profession. Neither drug store experience nor previous knowledge of Latin is assumed and careful explanation is made of points that are likely to prove troublesome. We are pleased to note that special attention has been paid to the writing of titles, and to prescriptions. Detailed explanation of Metric prescriptions is given and the requirements of "Harrison Law" prescriptions are noted. Although the volume is designed primarily as a textbook for colleges of pharmacy, we feel safe in saying that it will prove of value to the student of medicine and also as a reference book for physicians and pharmacists. -Practical Druggist and Pharmaceutical Review of Reviews, Volume 34 [1916]

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Pharmaceutical Latin and Prescription Writing and Interpretation This book is the product of several years' experience in the teaching of Pharmaceutical Latin, and is designed to present, in a simple and practical manner, such rudi ments of Latin as will enable the pharmacist to interpret correctly those portions of the language which he may encounter in the practice of his profession. It endeavors to teach these essentials in the limited time usually devoted to this subject, recognizing the fact that students come variously prepared in regard to both preliminary education and pharmaceutical training. Neither drug store experience nor previous knowledge of Latin on the part of the student is assumed, and careful explanation is made of such points as are likely to prove troublesome. Simplicity is obtained by spending but little time upon pronunciation; by omitting exceptions to general rules; by noting but four cases of the noun' and adjective, with stress upon the Genitive; by simplifying the third declension as much as seems advisable; and by reducing verb work to a minimum. The greater portion of the exercise work is on translation from Latin to English, and the exercises and sentences are carefully graded in difficulty and lead gradually into prescription work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical and Pharmaceutical Latin for Students of Pharmacy and Medicine: A Guide to the Grammatical Construction and Translation of Physicians' Prescriptions, Including Extensive Vocabularies and an Appendix Upon Foreign Prescriptions It is the author's earnest hope that this volume may be of some service to medical students and may assist them to write prescriptions in Latin, as was formerly the general custom, and is surely eminently desirable at the present time. Whereas the physician must know the Latin equivalent of the English, the dispensing chemist is concerned with the translation Of the Latin into appropriate English. The candidate for the Minor Examination Of the Pharmaceutical Society Of Great Britain is required to read without abbrevi ation prescriptions written in Latin, to translate them into English, and furthermore to understand the grammatical construction of the Latin employed. It has been my endeavour to place before the student a work that will be Of assistance to him in acquiring such knowledge. Book Latin for Pharmacists

Download or read book Latin for Pharmacists written by George Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin for Pharmacists While it is extremely desirable that every prospective pharmacist should have a course in Latin at least as extended as the ordinary high school course, still the fact remains that very many students enter schools of pharmacy with no training in Latin whatever. And after entrance unfortunately but little time can 1 be devoted to language study. A certain modicum of Latin, however, is absolutely essential to the understanding of pharmaceutical terminology and to the proper handling of prescriptions. This book is designed to furnish that necessary modicum. The book is divided into two parts. The first consists of nineteen lessons presenting in progressive arrangement the necessary instruction in forms and syntax, and excluding everything which, however desirable and helpful, is not of immediate practical use to the pharmacist. To each lesson has been added for purposes of practice a vocabulary and a double set of exercises. A special series of lessons deals with the writing and reading of prescriptions. The second part is intended primarily for purposes of reference to be used both by the student in the school of pharmacy and by the druggist at the prescription counter. It contains word classifications, a complete list of abbreviations in common use, an analysis of the pharmaceutical terminology, and a comprehensive Latin-English and English-Latin dictionary.
