Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1820s, a series of lectures has been delivered each year over the Christmas period in the world-famous Faraday Lecture Theatre at The Royal Institution of Great Britain by prominent scientists, addressed specifically to an audience of children. Initially made accessible in book form, the lectures have been nationally televised throughout the UK and distributed worldwide since the 1960s, making them accessible to an even larger audience. The importance of these lectures in promoting science to a broad audience is perhaps best gauged by the fact that an image of one of Faraday''s lectures appeared on the Bank of England u20 note in the 1990s. This anthology brings together, for the first time, a carefully chosen selection of 11 lectures from the 1860s to the 1990s. The selection includes lectures by Michael Faraday, arguably the most important and influential 19th-century physicist, and Lawrence Bragg, the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Prize. Through this work, readers will come to grips with the changing nature of popular science lectures over the past 140 years. Sample Chapter(s). Introduction (7,804 KB). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Electricity: At the Royal Institution, 1875-6 On December 12, 1825, a Committee appointed by the Managers reported 'that they had consulted Mr. Faraday on the subject Of engaging him to take a part in the juvenile lectures proposed to be given during the Christmas and Easter recesses, and they found his occupations were such that it would be exceedingly ih convenient for him to engage in such lectures.' Faraday's holding aloof was, however, but tempo rary, for at Christmas 1827 we find him giving a 'course of Six Elementary Lectures on Chemistry, adapted to a Juvenile Auditory.' The Easter lectures were soon abandoned, but from the date mentioned to the present time the Christmaslectures have been a marked feature of the Royal Institution.' Download or read book Transformations of Electricity in Nineteenth Century Literature and Science written by Stella Pratt-Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, practitioners of science, writers of fiction and journalists wrote about electricity in ways that defied epistemological and disciplinary boundaries. Revealing electricity as a site for intense and imaginative Victorian speculation, Stella Pratt-Smith traces the synthesis of nineteenth-century electricity made possible by the powerful combination of science, literature and the popular imagination. With electricity resisting clear description, even by those such as Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell who knew it best, Pratt-Smith argues that electricity was both metaphorically suggestive and open to imaginative speculation. Her book engages with Victorian scientific texts, popular and specialist periodicals and the work of leading midcentury novelists, including Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte, William Makepeace Thackeray and Wilkie Collins. Examining the work of William Harrison Ainsworth and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Pratt-Smith explores how Victorian novelists attributed magical qualities to electricity, imbuing it with both the romance of the past and the thrill of the future. She concludes with a case study of Benjamin Lumley’s Another World, which presents an enticing fantasy of electricity’s potential based on contemporary developments. Ultimately, her book contends that writing and reading about electricity appropriated and expanded its imaginative scope, transformed its factual origins and applications and contravened the bounds of literary genres and disciplinary constraints.
