Download or read book The Economic Development of South Korea written by Seung-hun Chun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 460 pages. Book excerpt: How did a country with a dearth of natural resources, a sprawling population congested in a limited arable land transform itself to a modern industrial state within a generation? How could these have been achieved given the lingering geopolitical threats to its very survival as a state, as evidenced by the Korean War and the internecine aggressive posturing of its neighbor from the north? This book looks at strategies, institutional arrangement, role of entrepreneurs and workers in this odyssey, and on how those factors have worked together through effective leadership to transform South Korea’s economic fortunes.

It assesses Korea’s economic take-off in the 1960s and 1970s, but also views the problems of ‘economic egalitarianism’ since the late-1980s to today. The book begins by listing and dispelling a number of important myths of the Korean economy and concludes by providing eight important ‘lessons’ derived from Korea’s experiences for developed as well as developing countries.

Download or read book Korean Workers written by Hagen Koo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years of rapid industrialization have transformed millions of South Korean peasants and their sons and daughters into urban factory workers. Hagen Koo explores the experiences of this first generation of industrial workers and describes its struggles to improve working conditions in the factory and to search for justice in society. The working class in South Korea was born in a cultural and political environment extremely hostile to its development, Koo says. Korean workers forged their collective identity much more rapidly, however, than did their counterparts in other newly industrialized countries in East Asia. This book investigates how South Korea's once-docile and submissive workers reinvented themselves so quickly into a class with a distinct identity and consciousness. Based on sources ranging from workers' personal writings to union reports to in-depth interviews, this book is a penetrating analysis of the South Korean working-class experience. Koo reveals how culture and politics simultaneously suppressed and facilitated class formation in South Korea. With chapters exploring the roles of women, students, and church organizations in the struggle, the book reflects Koo's broader interest in the social and cultural dimensions of industrial transformation.

Book Asia s Next Giant South Korea and Late Industrialization

Download or read book Asia s Next Giant South Korea and Late Industrialization written by Alice H. Amsden and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the rise of Japan in the world economy has been widely chronicled, South Korea has been quietly growing into a major economic force that is even challenging Japan in some industries. This book examines how government in South Korea has worked with selected industries to create companies that compete aggressively in world markets. The author views South Korean growth as an example of "late industrialization," a process in which a nation's industries learn from other innovator nations, rather than innovate themselves. Discussing state intervention, shop floor management, and technology transfer, the author explores the reason for South Korea's phenomenal growth. Of particular importance is the principle of reciprocity in which the government imposes strict performance standards on those industries and companies that it aids. The author also compares the South Korean experience to Japan's, and to other emerging nations such as Taiwan, Brazil, Turkey, India, and Mexico.

It is a welcome edition to studies on industrial policy experience for latecomers." - Dato' Dr. Rajah Rasiah, Distinguished Professor, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. "This book features many development policy lessons from Korea and Taiwan. It lays out convincing perspectives on the industrial catching-up and inclusive growth and demonstrates the economic value of agility for small economies. The book makes important contributions to the literature of innovation and development studies." -Keun Lee, Distinguished Professor, Seoul National University; Winner of Schumpeter Prize. "This is an excellent book which focuses on a comparison between the Korean and Taiwan models. Both countries have a remarkable achievement in high-tech development, but they are also facing their own domestic challenges. The discussion in this book can surely make an important contribution to the understanding of these two Asian Tigers." -Gee San, Professor Emeritus, National Central University, Taiwan. This book explores how small nations can mobilise and use productive activities to generate inclusive growth and rapidly move up the economic ladder. In this study, Dr. Wong explores how Korea and Taiwan came to balance between commanding critical technological competencies and driving inclusive-economic agendas and ultimately culminates decades of moving up the value chain for the two Asian dynamos. In a world dominated by superpowers, Dr. Wong demonstrates how agile, nimble mid-sized economies can move fast, innovate and achieve post industrial catch-up development. This book will interest scholars of the Asian manufacturing sector, those with an interest in the role semiconductors play in the global economy, and scholars of Asian development. Chan-Yuan Wong is presently a faculty at Institute of Technology Management, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) of Taiwan. He has studied and worked around the region, from Thailand to Malaysia to Korea.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development

This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 1226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrialization supported by industrial hubs has been widely associated with structural transformation and catch-up. But while the direct economic benefits of industrial hubs are significant, their value lies first and foremost in their contribution as incubators of industrialization, production and technological capability, and innovation. The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development adopts an interdisciplinary approach to examine the conceptual underpinnings, review empirical evidence of regions and economies, and extract pertinent lessons for policy reasearchers and practitioners on the key drivers of success and failure for industrial hubs. This Handbook illustrates the diverse and complex nature of industrial hubs and shows how they promote industrialization, economic structural transformation, and technological catch-up. It explores the implications of emerging issues and trends such as environmental protection and sustainability, technological advancement, shifts in the global economy, and urbanization.

Book Differences and Changes in Wage Structures

Download or read book Differences and Changes in Wage Structures written by Richard B. Freeman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries. Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment. From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.
