Book excerpt: In a day when evil men and impostors go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived (II Timothy 3:13), GOD's people should be moved to a deeper consecration and reverence in their daily conduct (II Peter 3:11). The more wicked the hour, the holier should be the aspirations and conduct of the Christian. Many years ago an old Puritan preacher wrote: "To keep in a spirit of holiness in an adulterous generation is a Christian honor." Such is the call of GOD in these troublous times. The letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor take on new force as we listen to the Son of Man speaking through them to the church of the present day. The fact that what our Lord said comprises nearly one-eighth of the Book of the Revelation serves to emphasize the importance GOD places on these encouragements and warnings. The materials appearing in these chapters were gathered from messages given over the special network of the Back to the Bible Broadcast. - John I. Paton Literature Editor

Book excerpt: “In Revelation 2:2, Jesus tells the church in Ephesus something intimate—Google Street View intimate. He says, ‘I know your works’ (Oida ta erga sou). Four words don’t seem like much, but in the Greek, it packs a punch.… Jesus chooses the Greek word oida, which expresses total, comprehensive knowledge. It is intimate knowledge that comes from being up close and personal. This knowledge isn’t hazy on the details. It doesn’t struggle to remember. It preserves the particulars. In the mind’s eye, everything is sharp and clear, like a well-taken photograph.” —Chris Palmer Letters from Jesus: Studies from the Seven Churches of Revelation explores Christ’s warnings to the seven most prominent churches in Asia Minor in the book of Revelation. These letters date back to 95 A.D., but they help us make a fascinating discovery about civilization: life hasn’t changed that much over the last two millennia. Author Chris Palmer illustrates the truths contained in the Letters from Jesus using modern, everyday examples. The host of the popular podcast Greek for the Week, he unpacks Greek words and phrases in these verses from Revelation with humor, joy, and biblical scholarship. Why study Greek, even just a little bit? As Chris explains, looking at the New Testament in the original language in which it was written can offer us some beautiful insights into God’s Word. “It’s like reading the Bible in high definition,” he says. Also, “studying God’s Word in the original language forces us to approach it with reverence and awe, humbling ourselves to obey what it says, whether it’s something we want to hear or not.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harsh tone of the Greek text is inescapable. Most of our modern Bibles are translations based on the Greek New Testament. So when I began to read the New Testament from the Aramaic language, it was like re-reading the Bible for the first time. The text came alive in a different way, and the burning love of God toward us permeated through the text more than I had ever seen. While translating chapters 2 and 3 of John's Revelation, that this dichotomy became ever more apparent. The Jesus that is so often portrayed as harsh and even violent (Rev 2:23) is seen in a completely different light in the original Aramaic language. He is the same Jesus we read and experience in the Gospels; loving, tender, compassionate. It is with great joy and reverential awe of our Lord Jesus that I present to you the seven letters to the seven churches in the Book of Revelation from Aramaic, the language of Jesus. My hope is that as you meditate on these words, you would experience a cleansing from religiosity, "by the washing of water with the word" (Eph 5:26). May this short read catapult you into a deeper encounter with His love! Here are a few sample texts from this book: "I will come for your sake, immediately, and I will cause them to have an encounter with the sword of my mouth" (Revelation 2:16). "Behold! I will make them come and prostrate themselves before your feet, and they will know that I burn with love for you" (Revelation 3:9). "But you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot. Therefore I am preparing to be causing you to be restored by my mouth" (Revelation 3:16).

Book The Seven Letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation

Download or read book The Seven Letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation written by James Thomas Lee, Jr. and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle John had been exiled to the isle of Patmos because of his stand for Christ. So on the Lord's Day, Jesus had come to him and had commanded him to write the words that appear in the book of Revelation. Revelation 1:10-11 says, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea." Each of the seven letters had followed a simple but consistent pattern. They had begun with a simple greeting that had stated specific characteristics of Jesus. Those characteristics had been indicated to the specific church based upon what the Lord through John would be saying to the church. Following that opening characteristic, Jesus had reported to each church an assessment of where they had been spiritually. He had then given them a prescription for fixing their problems. Lastly, He had concluded each letter by giving the people in each church a promise to those that HAVE overcome. In chapter one of this book, the author, date, and occasion for the writing of the book of Revelation will be given. What evidence exists to actually show that the Apostle John had written the book? The four most popular approaches for understanding the book of Revelation will also be discussed. Had the seven letters just been written to the seven churches or is there an expanded viewpoint about their applicability? In chapter two, a consideration of Proconsular Asia will be provided. That is the area where the seven churches had been located. So in looking at it, one can better understand when the seven churches had been established. One can also better understand the spiritual problems that had been prevalent in that region. In chapters three through nine, each of the seven letters will be carefully examined. Then chapter ten will present any final thoughts and conclusions that one might draw from this kind of study. As always the purpose of this book is to honor and glorify the Lord. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. He is worthy of ALL honor and glory.

Book excerpt: Many voices have weighed in on the health of the worldwide church. One voice is drowned out and forgotten, yet it is the most important voice of all. Before John the Apostle's death, he was struck with a revolutionary vision of the resurrected Jesus Christ. He not only saw Christ but also heard Christ. Jesus spoke seven letters to seven churches in Revelation 2-3, letters which help the modern church see and hear his heart. In "Let Us Hear," Pastor Nate Holdridge helps the modern church know Jesus through these seven ancient letters. Explaining each letter in detail, Nate takes the reader into the mind and heart of Christ. When these letters from Christ are understood, believers experience transformation. For those dull and lifeless, vitality returns. Those stuck in coldness and weakness experience fire and power. Those in need of encouragement and resolve find hope and grace. For any and every occasion believers find themselves in, Christ's letters provide the needed course altering perspective. Hear his voice, allowing health to flow into your mind and heart.

Book excerpt: In chapters 2 and 3 of the Revelation of John, Jesus looks at a tiny group of seven churches in the Roman province of Asia. We know from the letters Jesus wrote to these churches what He thought about each congregation, and it is believed that here in these letters, through the commendations, condemnations and challenges Christ brings to each church, our Lord was giving a heavenly blueprint as to how He expected the Church, His body, to be. Malcolm White's "You've Got Mail" takes the reader verse by verse through the seven letters, giving a deeper insight into life in each of the churches through the history of the cities they are found in. This presents not only a clearer understanding of each church and the relevance of Christ's message to them, but also of the relevance and application of these letters to our personal lives and churches today.

Book Preaching the Letters to the Seven Churches

Download or read book Preaching the Letters to the Seven Churches written by Gregory K. Tyree and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermeneutically, I have taken a literal and historical approach to the Letters to the Seven Churches. I believe that the Letters John received from Christ were sent to seven literal churches that actually existed at the time of John's writing, and I believe that these Seven Churches represent the Church of Christ through seven literal periods of Church History (as seen in the sermons). These Seven Letters matter today because the contemporary church is in trouble. We have left our "First Love," and have much to learn (and apply) from these two chapters in Revelation. My purpose for preaching these messages to my current congregation is directly linked to our intentional collective effort to evaluate the traits of a healthy church and to identify the two key areas in which we were weakest. Understanding the Seven Letters goes far beyond learning a history lesson; it means applying that knowledge to our current context. This, my fellow-laborer, is well-worth the effort, and will reap great fruit in accordance as it is sown. It is my prayer that these sermons can help you experience all of this and more. Using my outlines as a catalyst, pray, study, dig deep, and bring forth the truths that await you in the marvelous Word of God. "Let him who has ears hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
