Book Lessons for Beginners in Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lessons for Beginners in Reading Classic Reprint written by Florence Bass and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons for Beginners in Reading It is not the intention to teach color by the use of this little book. Only such colors have been selected as will cause the least confusion, and as seem to be known by nearly all children of six years. The colors are those which are most abundant in the fall of the year, when children enter school. By the constant repetition of the Old words, and by the introduction of comparatively few new ones, by the use of many short sentences, and a large number of easy lessons, it is believed the children may be able to read fluently before they encounter the difficulties that usually come so early in a First Reader. Three little stories have been included. These may be read to the children to aid in giving them the poetic view of some of the objects mentioned. It is further suggested that the little ones be made familiar with Henry Ward Beecher's beautiful stories of An Anxious Lea and Coming and Going, in Nor wood. There are also to be obtained many beautiful nature poems within the children's comprehension, which will further the same purpose. These lessons are not intended to displace any black board or observation work done by the wide-awake teacher, but rather to supplement such work by providing lessons upon the same subjects as the children have studied. Book The Easy Road to Reading

Download or read book The Easy Road to Reading written by Carrie Josephine Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading: Primer The subject matter in a beginning text book in reading should touch the child personally and be in keeping with his natural activities if it is to be of value in teaching him to read. It should appear for him in the form of action, rhythm, stories, plays, and games if the symbols of reading are to convey meaning. This Primer has been compiled with the foregoing in mind, the purpose being to offer an easy and natural course in reading for beginners. The vocabulary and subject matter have accordingly been chosen with special reference to the natural activities of children. Children are actors by nature and they therefore perform with pleasure the actions which words suggest. That which a child does involving self-activity makes a deep impression; thus the true meaning of words can be easily impressed upon him. It is, therefore, important that there shall be included in the early lessons a good list of action words which shall form the basis of interesting and thought-inspiring reading lessons and which can be easily demonstrated in class-room practice. The first nine lessons of The Easy Road to Reading Primer consist of simple reading matter compiled from a desirable list of action words. All these early lessons can be dramatized and the meaning of the words can thus be easily taught by having the children perform the actions suggested by them. Lessons 16-32 consist of interesting reading in which the new words are introduced in simple rhymes made up in part from the action words previously learned. These rhymes serve to fix the meaning of the words and sentences in the lessons and make the reading matter more interesting. Lessons 32-38 consist of short rhymes from that classic of childhood literature, Mother Goose. The lessons preserve the integrity of the rhymes, yet introduce a sufficient number of other sentences to emphasize the new words and fix by repetition those already presented. Lessons 38-68 are on nature. This section will be read in the fall of the year when the outside world is full of beauty and attractiveness. Book The Summers Readers

Download or read book The Summers Readers written by Maud Summers and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summers Readers: Manual First Lessons in Reading The Summers series of Readers consists of a Primer, a First Reader, and a Second Reader, closely articulated for the purpose of teaching beginners to read, and a Manual of Instruction intended to give teachers a full knowledge of the elements involved in the process of learning to read, and definite, practical guidance for daily classroom work. The whole purpose and essence of reading is the communication of ideas. It is the thought - the impression - rather than the form the expression which gives value to what is read. With this fact in mind the subject-matter has been chosen with special reference to primal social activities in history and contemporaneous society significant of the race development, as the securing of food, shelter, and clothing. But this subject-matter must touch the child personally if it is to be of value in learning to read. It must appear for him in the form of action, rhythm, stories, observation, plays and games, if the symbols of reading are to be fraught with meaning for him. What is of interest to the child, and what is of value to society, have both been kept in mind in selecting and arranging the literature of childhood used in this series of readers. This Manual of Instruction provides for three half years of work. Foreign children, or those of slower development, will require a longer time. In that event, the lessons in the Manual will suggest the order not the time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Beginner s Reading Book Classic Reprint written by Eben H. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Reading-Book A first reader should contain a great many very easy lessons, carefully graded, and so arranged as to aid sight and memory, since these powers are the most active in the process of learning to read. The style should be nat ural and simple, yet never in conflict with good English, and the sentences or paragraphs short, such as may be apprehended at a glance before utterance begins. This plan should continue throughout the first year, in order to establish the habit of natural and fluent sight-reading. After a few months' practice, however, long sentences may be read at sight with little effort, if divided into short sec tions at natural pauses, each section occupying a separate line. In such cases the pupils should read each section through as if it were complete in itself, then combine the parts and read the whole. The mind is thus aided to grasp the entire thought without undue effort, and with out confusion. Extensive practice with easy reading is the surest and quickest way of laying the foundation for intelligent sight-reading of a higher grade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading: A Manual for Teachers Using the Riverside Readers Reading is one Of mankind's greatest delights, as well as a main source Of information. The Riverside Primer is written with the belief that the very first reading may give delight to the beginner, besides furnishing him much information about many interesting things in his ever-expanding world; that in his very first book the child Should find the game and the rhyme, the dolly and the drum, loving thoughts of home, appreciative glimpses Of the nature and community worlds surrounding him. The approach to a reading lesson must focus the child's attention upon the central thought, helping him to find in the thought an expression of his own needs, desires, or interests. Unless he becomes seriously absorbed in the thought because Of this inherent interest, the lesson lacks that which is Of great est value, that which makes it really a reading lesson. Lessons in the Riverside Primer are SO closely related to child life that it is an easy matter to make a worthy approach; many lessons Offer a choice Of approaches; so that the teacher has an opportunity to vary her work as lessons are reviewed, or from year to year. Download or read book The Comprehensive Method of Teaching Reading Classic Reprint written by Emma K. Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comprehensive Method, of Teaching Reading This book presents carefully graded lessons for the beginner in reading. The simple stories and rhymes are grouped in divisions that correspond with the divisions of the accompany ing manual. The reading divisions illustrate the phonic facts taught in the corresponding phonic divisions. This does not mean that the reading lessons included under any one division Should be completed as the phonic facts of that division are developed. The phonic drill Should be kept well in advance. The reading of a given division may lap over into the time spent in developing the phonic facts of the next division. Read in this way, each lesson will be a review of the phonic facts already taught. N 0 problem will appear in a read ing lesson that has not been solved in the previous phonic drill. Because the mechanical difficulties of the page are mastered outside of the book in the period devoted to drill, the child's mind, when reading, is free to attend to the thought expressed, and he reads With increasing ease and appreciation. He has at his command more than the vocabulary of this book. He has gained much power to solve the word problems that he meets in supplementary reading. Book How to Teach Beginners to Read

Download or read book How to Teach Beginners to Read written by E. M. Quigley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Beginners to Read: Thought Method As reading is the most important subject to the primary child great care should be taken that the best method be employed in presenting it. The main object in teaching reading is to train the child to interpret the thoughts of others and to express them naturally as if they were his own. This is best done by the thought method. The child should never begin to read with less than a sentence. The teaching of words and their meaning, sounds, etc., should be used as a means, only, in getting the thought, never as an end in themselves. As soon as the teacher becomes acquainted with the little folks, the first step is to get them to talk easily and naturally about familiar objects, things they have seen, etc., to answer questions correctly and intelligently and to express themselves in complete and connected sentences. This will not be found a difficult task as the children think in sentences and have talked at home and to their little companions in complete sentences long before they entered school. An attempt, then, by the teacher to teach reading to little children by the a, b, c, word, phonic, or any method that takes from the thought is a great mistake. Some time should be spent in conversational lessons; then from three to four months in development work from the blackboard. The work should be presented in the following order: 1 Object. 2 Spoken thought. 3 Written thought. 4 Recognition of words in sentences and their meaning. 5 Transition from script to print. The lessons to be developed and read by the pupils should always be prepared in advance by the teacher. In preparing these lessons the sentences should be arranged in an orderly sequence; then the blackboard development lessons will train the children to think in an orderly way. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Werner Primer for Beginners in Reading The werner primer is a growth. It is based upon the kindergarten idea as taught by Froebel. According to his teachings, lessons in form and color should precede lessons in general science. The rainbow colors in flowers and fruits, and the sphere, cube and cylinder among type forms, furnish the most simple basis of classification for Observation work. These simple and clear ideas are especially suitable for the subject matter of the first reading lessons. Studies of plant and animal life follow naturally and these are closely related to the literature which is presented in story, song and fable. Again, the lessons put into practice the kindergarten doctrine that the hand helps the brain in acquiring knowledge. A variety Of occupations are pro vided, many of which will aid the child in learning to read and write. This Primer outlines for the teacher's use all the work for the first term or half year including reading, writing, language, number, science, literature and occupations. Full instructions for the teacher's guidance are given in the Suggestions and in the notes. Accompanying each lesson. These blackboard lessons are especially adapted to the needs of beginners, and should precede the work of a regular Primer or First Reader. Ali. Black board lessons should BE written, not printed. Never teach the beginners To print. Very few teachers can print so that the letters at all resemble the print of books and papers. What is far preferable to the teacher printing on the blackboard is the plan of having sight-word card drills. These cards, 5} x 81} inches, are made of heavy Manila paper, and can be obtained at any bindery. It is better to have the corners cut round. On one side of the card print the word with large rubber type, and on the other side write the word with either a rubber pen or black crayola. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Beginning Reading Games played with candlestick and at blackboard - A candlestick which had been provided for the occasion was brought out and the children played a game of jumping over it, meanwhile becoming more familiar with the rhyme. Miss Hardy then said she knew another way of playing the game in which all could play it at once. The children wondered how it could be done, and the teacher showed them how to represent a candlestick on the blackboard with the chalk and how to show Jack jumping back and forth by curved lines. The children exhibited considerable individuality in their drawings of the candlestick, some adding a little curved handle, others adding the flame with smoke trailing off. They practiced the rhythmic sweeps, back and forth, while reciting the rhyme in unison. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching of Primary Reading

Download or read book The Teaching of Primary Reading written by Alma M. Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Primary Reading: A Handbook for Teachers Using, the California State Series d104s There are two processes in learning to read: the mechanical, which is largely the mastery of words; and thought interpretation, that is, understanding the meaning of words associated as they are in sentences. The two processes can not be far separated. Though in the early stages most of the learner's attention must be on the mastery of words, his reading must be, from the beginning, thought recognition. The material which he reads, while it must be simple enough to come within his easy comprehension, must contain real thought, and thought which is interesting from the child's point of view. Up to the time of his entering school, the child has partially learned to understand oral language; he has learned in some degree to express his thoughts in articulate speech; he has acquired a great number of sense experiences; and he has partially established synthetic associations between his auditory and articulate language and his store of ideas and thoughts. In learning to read he is to acquire visual symbols for the thoughts he has already gained. The shortest and most natural method is from the spoken sentence to the written or printed sentence. The first reading lessons, therefore, should consist of short sentences, derived from the children's guided conversations on interesting topics, such as their pets, toys, games, nature lessons, and child literature. These are written sentence by sentence upon the blackboard, read and re-read, erased, written again and read repeatedly until mastered. In this way the child's reflex for oral speech is utilized; and oral reading is, from the beginning, talking the child's thoughts or the thoughts of another. If this idea is never lost, "word-saying" and unnatural and expressionless reading will not occur. When three to six sentences are learned, the important words are selected by the class. Thorough and oft-repeated word-drills, by varied and interesting devices, make these words familiar to the children. A new word is always presented in script; and, in the first lessons, in a sentence; but after the presentation of the word it is given in the word-drills in all four forms; as, cup, cup, Cup, cup. Children take script and print together very readily. In the reading lessons after the first two weeks, script and print alternate. There is therefore no transition from script to print or vice versa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In no part of his work is this more appar ent than in the very beginnings of instruction. The child commences to learn oral language by pronouncing words in imitation of others. He should also commence to learn printed and written language by imitation. The true starting point for the teaching of read ing is the thought; then comes its sign. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.
