Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warfare exerts a magnetic power, even a terrible attraction, in its emphasis on glory, honor, and duty. In order to face the terror of war, it is necessary to face how our biblical traditions have made it attractive -- even alluring. In this book Mark Smith undertakes an extensive exploration of "poetic heroes" across a number of ancient cultures in order to understand the attitudes of those cultures toward war and warriors. Smith examines the Iliad and the Gilgamesh; Ugaritic poems commemorating Baal, Aqhat, and the Rephaim; and early biblical poetry, including the battle hymn of Judges 5 and the lament of David over Saul and Jonathan in 2 Samuel 1. Smith's Poetic Heroes analyzes the importance of heroic poetry in early Israel and its disappearance after the time of David, building on several strands of scholarship in archaeological research, poetic analysis, and cultural reconstruction.

Book The Names of Homeric Heroes

Download or read book The Names of Homeric Heroes written by Nikoletta Kanavou and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to contribute to the appreciation of the linguistic, literary and contextual value of Homeric personal names. This is an old topic, which famously interested Plato, and an object of constant scholarly attention from the time of ancient commentators to the present day. The book begins with an introduction to the particularly complex set of factors that affect all efforts to interpret Homeric names. The main chapters are structured around the character and action of selected heroes in their Homeric contexts (in the case of the Iliad, a heroic war; the Odyssey chapter encompasses more than one planes of action). They offer a survey of modern etymologies, set against ancient views on names and naming, in order to reconstruct (as far as possible) the reception of significant names by ancient audiences and further to shed light on the parameters surrounding the choice and use of personal names in Homer. An Appendix touches on the underexplored career of Homeric personal names as historical names, offering data and a preliminary analysis.

Book excerpt: The Heroes of ‘45 by Ron Mielech The Heroes of ‘45 by Ron Mielech is an enchanting tale of historical fiction; however, this could very easily be a story told about life in a small Kentucky town during the war. The action takes place in 1945, following thirteen-year-old Richard Townsend. During the war, Richard’s father, C.F., continues his legal practice on the home front, while others of Richard’s family and friends are serving their country at war. Richard is pleased that his father is safe but is disappointed that he has not served in the military. Richard could not possibly have known at the beginning of summer how much his life would change. Through a course of events that took place by summer’s end, he would realize that you don’t have to fight a war to be a hero. He witnessed the heroic acts of others, including his father. Once he realized all of the truly good things his father did for others, he was proud to follow in his footsteps. And then, came the end of the war and life went on and the past gave way to the future.

Download or read book Forgotten Heroes written by Susan Ware and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-07-13 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pages of the past are full of characters who remind us that history depends upon the great deeds of men and women, whether famous or humble. Where would America be without George Washington, or Daniel Boone, or Sojourner Truth, or Babe Ruth? Where would we be without so many characters who are less well remembered today? Historians and biographers regularly come across stories of little-known or forgotten heroes, and this book provides a chance to rescue some of the best of them. In Forgotten Heroes, thirty-five of the country's leading historians recount their favorite stories of underappreciated Americans. From Stephen Jay Gould on deaf baseball player Dummy Hoy; to William Leuchtenburg on the truth behind the legendary Johnny Appleseed; to Christine Stansell on Margaret Anderson, who published James Joyce's Ulysses; these portraits can be read equally for delight, instruction, and inspiration Taken together, however, the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. Every culture needs heroes who lead by example and uplift us all in the process. Too often lately, historians have been more intent on picking apart the reputations of previously revered Americans. At times it has seemed as if the academy were on the attack against much of its own culture, denying its past greatness while making heroes only of its dissidents and doubters. Yet as this collection vividly demonstrates, heroes come in many shapes and sizes, and we all gain when we remember and celebrate them. Forgotten Heroes includes nearly as many women as men, and nearly as many people from before 1900 as after. It expands the traditional definition of hero to encompass not only military figures and politicians who took risks for great causes, but also educators, religious leaders, reformers, labor leaders, publishers, athletes, and even a man who started a record company. Many of them were heroes of conscience -- men and women who insisted on doing the right thing, no matter how unpopular or risky, commanding respect even from those who disagreed. Some were famous in their day and have since been forgotten, or remembered only in caricature. Others were little-known even when alive -- yet they all deserve to be remembered today, especially at the gifted hands of the authors of this book.

Book Young Heroes of the Confederacy

Download or read book Young Heroes of the Confederacy written by Debra West Smith and published by Pelican Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War was a war unlike any other. The bravery and strength the soldiers showed, the determination in the direst of circumstances, and the fearlessness when met with challenges never dreamed of set these dark years apart. So much has been recorded about the War Between the States from the bloody battles to the steadfast generals. However, there were others present who are often forgotten: young people who were faced with a fate they never thought they would meet when their lives were taken out of their control. These children of the Confederacy soon grew accustomed to empty fields, family members who never returned home, and lives shortened by the hard impact of a bullet. Many felt a calling to join the cause and found themselves in the same situations as their adult counterparts: prisoners of war, amputees, spies, or guides for generals-only they were barely twenty years old. This collection of true accounts presents the voices of those who faced the ultimate test of character and courage and until now have so rarely been heard. The stories of these emerging adults provide an engrossing exploration of the Civil War in a way that is unlike any other in delivery and subject matter.

Book The Comic Book Heroes

Download or read book The Comic Book Heroes written by Will Jacobs and published by Crown. This book was released on 1985 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history of modern costumed-hero comic books, from the start of the Silver Age in 1956 up to today. Focusing on DC and Marvel Comics, the story begins with the efforts of DC to revitalize such Golden Age heroes as the Flash, Superman, and Green Lantern in the wake of the anti-comic furor of the early 1950s. The authors cover the science fiction rage of the late 1950s, the birth of the experimental Marvel Comics Group in 1961, the emergence of such classic Marvel characters as the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, the "camp" craze set off by the "Batman" TV show in 1966, and the socially conscious and politically relevant comics of the early 1970s. Later chapters describe the slump of the mid-1970s, as the medium lost touch with its young readers, followed by the comics' resurgence of the 1980s, as many new companies help DC and Marvel to extend the boundaries of the field with innovation, daring, and a new sophistication. Factually thorough and written in a lively, narrative style, this history includes behind-the-scenes glimpses at the men who wrote, drew, and published the comics, the impact of their creations on the fans, and critical assessments of the works themselves. Illustrated throughout with examples of comic book art, The Comic Book Heroes will inform and entertain both the hardcore fan and the casual reader of this most popular of American mediums.
