Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance, Barbara Kalish fit the stereotype of a 1950s wife and mother. Married at eighteen, Barbara lived with her husband and two daughters in a California suburb, where she was president of the Parent-Teacher Association. At a PTA training conference in San Francisco, Barbara met Pearl, another PTA president who also had two children and happened to live only a few blocks away from her. To Barbara, Pearl was "the most gorgeous woman in the world," and the two began an affair that lasted over a decade. Through interviews, diaries, memoirs, and letters, Her Neighbor's Wife traces the stories of hundreds of women, like Barbara Kalish, who struggled to balance marriage and same-sex desire in the postwar United States. In doing so, Lauren Jae Gutterman draws our attention away from the postwar landscape of urban gay bars and into the homes of married women, who tended to engage in affairs with wives and mothers they met in the context of their daily lives: through work, at church, or in their neighborhoods. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the lesbian feminist movement and the no-fault divorce revolution transformed the lives of wives who desired women. Women could now choose to divorce their husbands in order to lead openly lesbian or bisexual lives; increasingly, however, these women were confronted by hostile state discrimination, typically in legal battles over child custody. Well into the 1980s, many women remained ambivalent about divorce and resistant to labeling themselves as lesbian, therefore complicating a simple interpretation of their lives and relationship choices. By revealing the extent to which marriage has historically permitted space for wives' relationships with other women, Her Neighbor's Wife calls into question the presumed straightness of traditional American marriage.

Book excerpt: Ask a man his favorite fantasy, and he'll tell you he craves to see his wife/girlfriend spend playtime with other women. Funny thing is, many women don't tell their men they need the same thing. And in that gap of truth not shared, a tantalizing desire lingers. Meet Derek. A silly man who finds himself steeping in this very stew. He's finally experiencing the "arrangement" he's craved for years... the love triangle he swore he couldn't live without.Problem is, in the blink of an eye, he's been pushed to a very cold curb, because real-life, lesbian cuckolding, is not for the faint of heart, or weak of mind. Insecurity and humiliation are powerful forces. So is realizing his wife is under the spell of a very beautiful creature. There's not a thing Derek can do about it, either, as he witnesses firsthand a skilled cuckquean wielding power over his wife, while twisting Derek's mind and heart into all sorts of tortured little knots simultaneously. What a "terrible" dilemma. Question is... can Derek "man up" and accept his new status, or is manning up an impossible thing for him to do? Yes, Secret Needs is very much based on a true story. Follow Derek on his adventures. Discover what happens when a man when bites off more than he can chew, and how he finds himself enduring the "agonizing" ritual of fearing he's losing his wife to another woman... every... single...day.

She lives on the green earth with her mother, Demeter, growing up beneath the ever-watchful eyes of the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. But when Persephone meets the enigmatic Hades, she experiences something new: choice. Zeus calls Hades "lord" of the dead as a joke. In truth, Hades is the goddess of the underworld, and no friend of Zeus. She offers Persephone sanctuary in her land of the dead, so the young goddess may escape her Olympian destiny. But Persephone finds more than freedom in the underworld. She finds love, and herself.

Book Masculinity in Lesbian Pulp Fiction

Download or read book Masculinity in Lesbian Pulp Fiction written by Paul Thompson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks specifically and in depth, for the first time, at masculinity in cheap, lesbian-themed paperbacks of the two decades after WW2. It challenges established critical assumptions about the readership, and sets the masculinity imagined in these novels against the “masculinity crisis” of the era in which they were written. The key issue of these novels is couplehood as much as sexuality, and the instability of masculinity leads to the instability of the couple. Thompson coins the term “heteroemulative” to describe the struggle that both heterosexual and homosexual couples have in conforming to heteronormativity. As several of these novels have been republished and remain in print, they have taken on a new relevance to issues of sexuality and gender in the twentyfirst century, and this study will attract readers within that area of interest. A valuable read for sociologists studying gender roles, and social historians of the cold war period in the United States. It is suitable for readers of all academic levels, from undergraduate, through postgraduate, to scholars and researchers, but also for a general readership.

Book The Gay Lesbian Atlas

Download or read book The Gay Lesbian Atlas written by Gary J. Gates and published by The Urban Insitute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the words "we are everywhere" can be frequently heard at gay and lesbian political events, The Gay and Lesbian Atlas provides the first empirical confirmation of this rallying cry. Drawing on the most recent data from the U.S. Census, this groundbreaking work offers a detailed geographic and demographic portrait of gay and lesbian families in all 50 states plus the top 25 U.S. metropolitan areas. These results, presented in more than 250 full-color maps and charts, will both confirm and challenge anecdotal information about the spatial distribution and demographic characteristics of this community. It is probably no surprise that San Francisco, Key West, and western Massachusetts all host large gay and lesbian populations, but it might surprise some that Houston, Texas, contains one of the ten "gayest" neighborhoods in the country, or that Alaska and New Mexico have high concentrations of gay and lesbian couples in their senior populations. The Atlas is a unique and important resource for the political and public policy communities, public health officials, social scientists, and anyone interested in gay and lesbian issues
