Book excerpt: Violence is a male biological trait. When women fight, no one gets seriously hurt. Lesbians don't abuse their spouses. The truth revealed in Janice Ristock's groundbreaking book is that lesbian relationships sometimes do turn violent. Based on interviews with more than one hundred lesbians who have suffered abuse and seventy-five case workers, No More Secrets is the first in-depth account of this startling phenomenon. Although one in four gay and lesbian couples are affected by domestic violence, the problem has remained hidden for several reasons. By giving voice to the victims, Ristock helps women to address violence by breaking silences, sharing secrets, and naming the forms of abuse.

Book Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men

Download or read book Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men written by Jamie Goddard and published by Virgin Books. This book was released on 2002-11-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The aim of Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men is to teach men what lesbians know about pleasing women. This is more than a primer on body parts and oral sex (though yes, there's plenty of that). It's also about how to talk (the best way to find out what your partner likes), how to listen, how to open up, and how to get your mind off your member. The chapter entitled "Foreplay? Honey, It's All Play!" should make women cheer. The writing is clever, graphic, intimate, and festive. No subject is off limits: sex toys, sex during menstruation ("When the Moon Is Between Her Legs"), "Finger Love (Becoming a Digital Master)," "The Lowdown on Going Down," anal play ("Ass-istance for Two"), and much more. In many short quotes, women frankly discuss their likes and dislikes. Notes of special importance, titled "Honey, Come Closer," include: "Quit thinking of the clitoris as a little pea-sized bump.... It is actually a whole system of erectile tissue, spongy tissue, muscles, nerve endings, blood vessels, and glands." "By taking your time, not only do you create steamy anticipation in your partner; you also get to check out the territory and get a good sense of where everything is so there is no clumsy fumbling." "A steady hand is worth a thousand orgasms." If men understood what great sexual tools their brains, mouths, and hands were, say the authors, they'd see sex and pleasure differently and communicate in new ways. This book is guidebook and roadmap--and very entertaining besides! (Warning: If you're offended by slang terms for sex and sexual parts, this book isn't for you.)' --Joan Price

Book Family Secrets

  • Author : Gloria González-López
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2017-06-20
  • ISBN : 1479866172
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Family Secrets written by Gloria González-López and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “My breasts stopped growing when my grandfather touched them,” confides ‘Elisa’, a young woman who recounts the traumatic incest and sexual abuse she experienced in childhood. In Family Secrets, Gloria González-López tells the life stories of 60 men and women in Mexico who, like Elisa, saw their lives irrevocably changed in the wake of childhood and adolescent incest. In Mexico, a patriarchal, religious society where women are expected to make themselves sexually available to men and where same-sex experiences for both men and women bring great shame, incest is easily hidden, seldom discussed, and rarely reported to authorities. Through gripping, emotional narrative, González-López brings the deeply troubling, hidden, and unspoken issues of incest and sexual violence in Mexican families to light. González-López contends that family and cultural structures in Mexican life enable incest and the culture of silence that surrounds it. She examines the strong bonds of familial obligation between parents and children, brothers and sisters, and elders and youth that, in the case of incest, can morph into sexual obligation; the codes of honor and shame reinforced by tradition and the Church, discouraging openness about sexual violence and trauma; the double standards of morality and stereotypes about sexuality that leave girls and women and gender nonconforming boys and men especially vulnerable to sexual abuse. Together, these cultural factors create a perfect storm for generations upon generations of unspoken incest, a cycle that takes great courage and strength to heal from and overcome. A riveting account, Family Secrets turns a feminist and sociological lens on a disturbing trend that has gone unnoticed for far too long.

Book Lesbian Detective Fiction

Download or read book Lesbian Detective Fiction written by Phyllis M. Betz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-07-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines how lesbian detective and mystery fiction represents lesbian characters and experience within the confines of the genre. As this book points out, such fiction reveals the lesbian's increasing visibility in the wider society. Nevertheless, it can still be difficult to find a complete representation of lesbian life in mainstream literature. Often the best place to find the lesbian represented in books is within the pages of genre fiction--especially the detective story. This book looks at how the lesbian characters' public and private lives intersect--often at the point of coming out, or of moving from isolation to connection with the community. Also considered is the lesbian detective's typical confrontation with two crucial elements of the investigator's role: the use of violence and the acquisition and expression of authority within police systems. Other topics of discussion include the cultural environments in which the stories are situated, and the use of humor as a key weapon in the lesbian detective's investigative arsenal.

"DAISUKI." Approximately 43,000 words Aiko and Reina have been together for almost 20 years, yet one thing remains unsaid between them: "Daisuki," or, "I love you." As they approach their anniversary, their relationship comes to an impasse as Aiko the Japanese housewife begins demanding "I love you" with a side of marriage and romance. But Reina doesn't understand complex concepts like "love" or other heavy emotions. She's spent years supporting her girlfriend via a soul-sucking salary job and tending to their mutual needs in the bedroom. Isn't that sufficient? In a culture demanding Reina choose between the "feminine" and the "masculine" worlds, it's bad enough she's trying to find her role without Aiko adding extra pressure. Some words need not saying, but "I love you" is about to destroy a relationship already surviving strange side-lovers and even stranger exploits. "DAISUKI." takes place from December, 2011 - July, 2012. "HATSUKOI." Approximately 83,500 words If society has taught Aiko anything, it's that one day she will marry a man. Not until she meets Reina, a lesbian with a knack for flirting, does she decide she wants to experience a different kind of sexual liberation - assuming she can overcome her insecurities and nosy family. As she succumbs more and more to Reina's charms, however, Aiko wonders if she can really abandon everyone's expectations. Reina has met plenty of girls like Aiko before: cute, naive, and ready to screw the status quo. After being burned by countless young women who go on to marry men and forget their lesbian lives, how can Reina trust yet another "good girl" following her around? Especially when she thinks she may be having those foreign feelings for her best friend instead. Time will only tell if Hatsukoi, or "first love," has really come to two such different people. Is their relationship genuine or just another footnote amongst flirting, lying, and sneaking around love hotels? "HATSUKOI." takes place from December, 1992 - April, 1993. "SEIKOU." Approximately 70,000 words For over twenty years Reina has sexually celebrated the women around her with a reverence only tolerated by her wife, Aiko. But when Reina misinterprets the fluidity of their open relationship, she's backed into a corner where her gender dysphoria reigns supreme. In order to salvage her marriage, she may have to reanalyze the way she views the world, her life, and her experiences. Just when she thinks she's figured her spouse out, Aiko faces an unexpected transgression. Can she forgive her? Or will love finally give way to the fatigue that accompanies being with someone like Reina? A sick mother and unsympathetic sister are not helping Aiko's dilemma. Even the most passionate relationships sometimes fall asunder to "seikou," the sexual character at the core of one's identity. Will Reina and Aiko reunite with stronger hearts, or is it finally time to go their separate ways? And if they do split up, who will help them pick up the pieces - the stoic therapist, the desperate socialite, or the young couple who initiated this mess to begin with? "SEIKOU." takes place from March - April 2013 NOTE - These books contains the following: Graphic language Sexual situations Polyamory / Open relationships Gender dysphoria Infidelity A lot of love for women who love women. Book Family Secrets

Download or read book Family Secrets written by Jean M Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a clinical psychologist, Jean Baker had always considered herself open-minded and tolerant, but found she wasn’t prepared for the revelation that her only two children were both gay. Family Secrets is an inspirational story of how she and her family learned to accept one another and overcome their internalized fears and prejudices as well as how they coped with a much greater challenge in their personal lives--HIV/AIDS. Family Secrets is more than a parenting memoir, however. It is a guide that draws upon research and scientific findings to capsize the myths and stereotypes that contribute to societal homophobia. It offers important insight into the developmental needs of gay children, and it discusses the issues faced by gay and lesbian youth and their families. Offering practical suggestions about how parents and schools can help gay, lesbian, and bisexual children grow up to be productive, psychologically healthy adults, Family Secrets discusses the effects of social prejudice and stigma on the social and emotional development of sexual minorities. As long as homophobia is running rampant in American society, gay children are going to be reluctant or afraid to confide in their parents, and parents will have trouble understanding and accepting homosexuality in their children. To end the secrecy and build open and healthy environments for all children and adolescents, this book discusses: tactics for reducing homophobia in non-gay youths promoting tolerance and understanding of sexual minorities at home and in school the effects an AIDS death has on families “coming out” about HIV/AIDS discussing homosexuality with your children, regardless of whether or not they are gay or lesbian sexual orientation and the interaction of biology with experience Because Family Secrets is written from the viewpoint of a parent/psychologist, it offers insights into the developmental needs of gay and lesbian children in a way that no other book has done. School counselors, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, teachers, school administrators, and the parents and siblings of gays and lesbians will all benefit from reading this honest, helpful, and encouraging book.

Download or read book The Psychology of Secrets written by Anita E. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an MTV special aired in 2000, young interviewees were asked to confess the worse thing they were ever told during a romantic breakup. One person tearfully responded "that I suck in bed. " More recently, an acquaintance of mine admitted to his new girlfriend that he "has a mean streak. " She decided not to date him after that. Another memorable and painful example of openness occurred years ago when I served as a member of a suicide intervention team. I was called to a very disturbing scene in an upscale neighborhood to console a woman who was threaten ing to take her life on the lawn in front of her children. Her husband had just confessed his long-term affair to her that morning and she felt that her world was coming apart. Fortunately, she did not take her life but was left with the humiliation of haVing her neighbors know about her private troubles. The question these examples bring to mind is, "Why do people so often reveal potentially stigmatizing personal information to others?" The reader probably has an intuitive answer to this question already. It can seem like such a burden-even torture-to keep secrets from other people. Hiding such things as feelings of discontent from a boyfriend or girlfriend, violations of the law from close friends, and indiscretions from employers can be alienating. People want others to know them; therefore they often end up disclosing self-incriminating information.
