Book Syntagmatia

Download or read book Syntagmatia written by Dirk Sacré and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume has been dedicated to two distinguished scholars of Neo-Latin Studies on the occasion of their retirement after a long and fruitful academic career, one at the Université catholique Louvain-la-Neuve, the other at the internationally renowned Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae of Leuven University. Both the rich variety of subjects dealt with and the international diversity of the scholars authoring contributions reflect the wide interests of the celebrated Neo-Latinists, their international position, and the actual status of the discipline itself. Ranging from the Trecento to the 21st century, and embracing Latin writings from Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, the New World, Spain, Scotland, Denmark and China, this volume is as rich and multifaceted as it is voluminous, for it not only offers studies on well-known figures such as Petrarch, Lorenzo Valla, Erasmus, Vives, Thomas More, Eobanus Hessus, Lipsius, Tycho Brahe, Jean de la Fontaine and Jacob Cats, but it also includes new contributions on Renaissance commentaries and editions of classical authors such as Homer, Seneca and Horace; on Neo-Latin novels, epistolography and Renaissance rhetoric; on Latin translations from the vernacular and invectives against Napoleon; on the teaching of Latin in the 19th century; and on the didactics of Neo-Latin nowadays.

Book The Unknown Philosopher

Download or read book The Unknown Philosopher written by Arthur Edward Waite and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1987-01-15 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the substance of the doctrine of the most enlightened, most liberal, most truly catholic of the later Christian transcendentalists of the last decades of the 18th century, provides a clear introduction to the theosophical system of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin. He was popularly known as the "Unknown Philosopher" because none of his writings were published under his name during his lifetime. His fame is based on being a true mystic, on his literary abilities to express this true mysticism, and on his passionate search for higher wisdom. Saint-Martin's belief that "the most important problem of all human thinking is to understand man as a free personality, whose very foundation is himself," has an important and significant place in the history of modern man's struggle toward freedom.

Book Persuasion in the French Personal Novel

Download or read book Persuasion in the French Personal Novel written by Richard Bales and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book tackles the manner in which techniques of persuasion inform the substance of major texts written in the Romantic period. After an introduction which reviews aspects of rhetoric germane to such a study, individual chapters detail the way in which they are deployed. In Chateaubriand's Rene, the eponymous hero gears his narrative in such a way as to assure himself of tactical superiority over his listeners. Constant's Adolphe clothes himself in superficially dazzling language, while the hero of Balzac's Le Lys dans la vallee adopts a more low-key display of epistolary self-justification. In Nerval's Sylvie, the protagonist engages in a program of poetic self-delusion, a procedure which Fromentin's Dominique carries out to a more emphatic degree of willed assertion. The common thread is that all of these texts contain inscribed within their fabric a desire to project private failure as public success."

Book La voie de la sagesse et de la libert

Download or read book La voie de la sagesse et de la libert written by J De l'air and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition

Download or read book Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition written by Florentino García Martínez and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the papers read at the 51st Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July 31 - August 2, 2002) dedicated to the study of the theme of Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the biblical tradition in general. The "Main papers" and some of the "Offered papers" have been thematically grouped in four parts. Part I comprises four articles dealing with the relationship between wisdom and apocalypticism in the Scrolls compared to the biblical tradition. Part II includes five papers which focus on specific wisdom compositions from Qumran, such as 1Q/4QMysteries, 4QInstruction, 4QTime of Righteousness, or the "Tractate of the Two Spirits" from the Rule of the Community. The nine contributions of Part III analyse different aspects of biblical Wisdom compositions (in Qohelet, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon) or of apocalyptic writings (in 1 Enoch and 4 Ezra) in the light of the Qumran Wisdom texts. Part IV groups six studies on several aspects of the Wisdom compositions from Qumran (messianic ideas, ecstatic worship, the beatitudes, or the fate of the righteous) which are directly relevant for the study of the New Testament. The articles are written in English (14), French (6), and German (4). Among the contributors are specialists of the Dead Sea Scrolls (Jean Duhaime, Torleif Elgvin, Armin Lange, Hermann Lichtenberger, Emile Puech, Eibert Tigchelaar) and of Early Judaism (e.g., John J. Collins, Daniel Harrington, Michael Knibb), as well as Old Testament scholars (e.g., Hainz-Josef Fabry, Maurice Gilbert, Klaus Koch).

Download or read book Sur Les Chemins de la Sagesse written by Michel Théron and published by Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
