Le Dr Demolière montrait dans son travail de thèse en 2010, que la prévalence de ces troubles chez les enfants de 6 à 40 mois, était de 30,8%, et avait identifié certains facteurs de risque tels que l’augmentation de l’âge de l’enfant, l’origine ethnique maghrébine ou africaine des parents. Le facteur protecteur retrouvé était le fait que l’enfant s’endorme seul. L’objectif de notre étude, était d’évaluer la prévalence de ce trouble dans une population d’enfant représentative des franciliens, et de vérifier si les facteurs retrouvés dans le précédent travail étaient présents dans notre population. Nous avons étudié le sommeil de 168 enfants de 6 à 36 mois dans différents cabinets médicaux d’Ile de France. Des troubles de l’endormissement (définis comme un temps d’endormissement supérieur à 15 minutes) ont été retrouvé chez 18% des enfants. Les facteurs de risque retrouvés étaient le fait de vivre en appartement, et l’âge croissant de l’enfant. Le facteur protecteur était le fait que l’enfant s’endorme seul. L’origine ethnique des parents ainsi que les jeux avant endormissement semblaient influencer les troubles de l’endormissement. L’association avec les réveils nocturnes, sujet d’un autre travail, était également retrouvée, à savoir que les enfants qui présentaient au moins 3 réveils nocturnes par semaine avaient un endormissement plus long. Toutefois, certains résultats n’atteignaient pas la signification statistique par manque de puissance dû aux faibles effectifs. Une étude de plus grande ampleur semble justifiée afin de vérifier ces résultats et de définir leur impact.

Dr Martin montrait dans sa thèse que la prévalence était de l’ordre de 50% des enfants de 6 à 36 mois et avait identifié certains facteurs de risque tels que l’heure de coucher tardive, l’endormissement avec une tierce personne et l’allaitement. Les facteurs protecteurs étaient l’origine métropolitaine et l’endormissement rapide. L’objectif de notre étude était d’évaluer la prévalence de ce trouble dans une population d’enfants représentative des enfants franciliens et de vérifier si les facteurs influents retrouvés dans la thèse susdite se retrouvaient dans cette population. Nous avons étudié le sommeil de 168 enfants de 6 à 36 mois dans différents cabinets situés en Ile de France. Des réveils nocturnes ont été retrouvés chez 47% des enfants. Les réveils nocturnes étaient plus élevés chez les enfants ayant besoin d’un moyen de succion ou d’un doudou à l’endormissement. Ils étaient moins fréquents chez les enfants n’ayant besoin de rien à l’endormissement. Les origines ethniques influençaient la présence de réveils nocturnes. Le trouble de l’endormissement n’était pas un facteur de risque de réveil nocturne mais on retrouvait plus de troubles de l’endormissement chez les enfants ayant plus de 3 nuits avec réveils nocturnes par semaine
