Download or read book Contaminated Soil 95 written by W.J. van den Brink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards sustainable land use Dr. P. Folstar, Member of the TNO Board of Management Dr. M. Popp, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Research Centre Karlsruhe (FZK) Ten years ago, in 1985, TNO initiated the First Conference on Contaminated Soil in Utrecht. At that time, a rather complete inventory of suspected contaminated sites existed in The Netherlands. Time had come to consider further actions for investigations, evaluation and remediation. This concern has been spreading ever since to other European countries and throughout the world. In particular, German scientists and authorities soon recognized the significance of this problem, and consequently joined TNO in organizing and funding a forum for discussions in a series of conferences. Following three venues in German cities, the 5th conference in Maastricht, a Dutch as well as a European city, marks the increasing interest in the international scientific and political community. Application of the concept of sustainable development to soil as an essential element of human existence requires an answer to the question how to meet the needs of today's generation without impairing the possibilities of mankind in the future. As we do not know the needs of the future, especially regarding the functional requirements of soil use, we can hardly do better than starting from the present priorities. This can not mean to guarantee the quality of soil functions everywhere at any time.

Download or read book Sustainable Energy Water Environment Nexus in Deserts written by Essam Heggy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses challenges and opportunities in the Energy-Water-Environment (EWE) nexus, with a particular focus on research and technology development requirements in harsh desert climates. Its chapters include selected contributions presented during the 1st international conference on sustainable Energy-Water-Environment nexus in desert climates (ICSEWEN-19) held at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) in Doha, Qatar in December 2019. This volume is comprised of three main chapters, each describing important case studies and progress on water, energy and environmental questions. A fourth chapter on policies and community outreach on these three areas is also included. This compilation aims to bridge the gap between research and industry to address the socioeconomic impacts of the nexus imbalance as perceived by scientists, industrial partners, and policymakers. The content of this book is of particular importance to graduate students, researchers and decision makers interested in understanding water, energy and environmental challenges in arid areas. Re searchers in environmental and civil engineering, chemistry, hydrology and environmental science can also find unique in-situ observations of the current nexus imbalance in deserts climate to validate their investigations. It is also an invaluable guide for industry professionals working in water, energy, environment and food sectors to understand the rapidly evolving landscape of the EWE nexus in arid areas. The analyses, observations and lessons-learned summarized herein are applicable to other arid areas outside North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as well, such as central Australia, the southwest of the United States and deserts in central Asia.

Download or read book Screening Guide for Contaminated Sediment Treatment Technologies written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes contaminated sediment treatment scenarios (with variants) available to project promoters: everything from no action to partial or total removal of sediment contaminants, depending on the decontamination level required by current criteria. The strengths and limitations of each scenario are outlined, and scenario evaluation and selection criteria are proposed. Pretreatment technologies are described, and each's stage of development, strengths and limitations are indicated. Soil and sediment treatment technologies tested in different parts of the world or under demonstration for sediment remediation are described. For each type of technology, the following information is given: basic principle, methods or processes available, application, strengths and limitations, processes demonstrated on sediment processes under demonstration and processes recommended for contaminated sediment cleanup projects. Given the amount of contaminated water generated by the handling and treatment of sediment, the guide also describes technologies demonstrated or under demonstration for effluent or leachate treatment.
